UTAH'S CENTENNIAL! One hundred years ago, the Mormon Pioneers first entered the Great Salt Lake Valley. For purposes of government while crossing the plains, they were divided into groups, or companies, which were supervised by leaders called Captains of Tens. Determinedly, they faced the dangers and obstacles of a trackless desert in order to reach the spot chosen for them to build their empire. The structure of the church organ- ization contributed strength and unity among the members of, and between groups. ln the evenings, recreational activities provided diversion and relaxation and made the iourney easier to bear. On July 24, 1847, they arrived at their destination. Through the years, despite hardships and suffering, they constantly worked and struggled together producing the finalf result of a state rich in resources and industry. In the past lie one hundred years of progress. What does the future hold? It is for us, the future citizens of this state, to answer that question. We face a great social and economic frontier which can be crossed only through faith and perseverance. The future holds iust as much as we will put into it. Truly, we are the Pioneers of Today . Five
