The very severity of their environment eliminated the weak and unresourceful. It has lvecome cust- omary to insist that our present sheltered living will soften this generation of hoys and girls. lt is prohahle that more physically frail will survive now than formerly. But surely no one will insist that the present permits of less mental and moral vigor in the men and women who are to succeed. It was not lsecause the fellows lacked leader- ship or a capalwle coach, nor did they lack internal grit. They were exceed- ingly light and inexperienced. Fifteen men earned their letters in the past year and nine of theae will return next yearg so everything indicates that next year should he more successful. Our victories were over Morgan in a practice game and North Cashe in a league game. Outside of the game with Box lflder, later state champions, our games were more hotly contested and more evenly matched than perhaps the scores would indicate. Particularly ,was this true of the annual feud with Ogden. ln this contest Ogden and Wleher laattled stulmhornly and evenly until near the close of the fray when Ogden was successful in increasing the difference materially. Ot' interest to the school and especially to the team this year, since it was the tirst intersectional footlwall game of the school, was the trip to lily, Nevada, where our hoys hattled gallantly against odds which eventually overwhelmed them hut did not stop them from scoring two touchdowns. - ' ' Q..--1 -1.- l -11- ' 3- . f--- TH E GOLDEN SPIKE FOOTBALL SQUAD f I'UlIf Row You Shaw, Dam 'l'orgl1cIc, Grunt llmlsun Giilwcrr 'l':1ylor, .luck 'l'huma1s, liniwirm lluncs, Clmrlcs rXl1llm-rg, Unnimm Ilamscn, -IUSUPII I,llIlilllllL'. Although the team won only eight of its thirteen praetiee games, with three letter men of ll,-Q4 on the squad and eneouraging new material showing rapid development, hope for a winning team was high. ln spite of a defeat in their first league game fans lielieved that the hoys would later redeem them! selves for VVeher's stage fright seemed to have aided Ogden in winning their victory over XVelyer on Welac-r's home floor, the First in the hizror ' of their Competition. This lwelief was supported hy a series ol' vietories over all remain- ing opponents ol' the division. Some of these gamez, however, were won in the last periods after trailing their enemies in the heginnings of the gamesg the game with South Caehe was partiealarly thrilling and frightening heeause ol' sueh eireumstanees. Archery has heeome the outstanding sport and a survey showed that more girls preferred archery than any other sport. This prohahly accounts for the success of the inter-school contests conducted lvctween Odgen and XN'cher lligh Schools. ln hoth contests the Wleher girls were victorious, making the highest scores. ln the spring the archery series was continued and contests were held with XN'eher College and Ogden High School. liasehall opened the series ofdifferent games played throughout the year, and in the spring the inter-cluh series was held. The squads have functioned lwetter, the Sophomore classes are larger and a great deal of interest has heen shown in girls' gym work. llit pin and archery followed hasehall, and an inter-class series of hit pin was conducted. During the winter months the inter-cluh series of volley hall was played, with the Girls' Athletic Association heing victorious. The silver loving cup offered to the winning cluh was presented to this organization hecause of its successful season. lfor the second successive year the posture team was entered at the Provo meet, along with a track team and entries in original dance numhers. The Girls' Athletic Association, a phase of the Girls' Athletic program, continues and has again heen active in its field. lts main contrihutuion was the lfine Arts Review, which was presented March 6, and featured inter- pretive, tap, adagio, hallroom and national dancing. The theme this year was story hook land, and interpretations from the Bihle. This Review received the support of a large and appreciative audience. Nliss Brinton is the advisor ofthe Girls' Athletic Association and the otlicers are: lfdith lierrett, president, Mary Gihson, secretaryg Rhea Child, reporter, and Tillie Coletti, athletic manager. We-her County was organized hy the General Assemlaly ofthe provision- al state of Deseret in the winter of 1840-50. ln the fall of 1850 Governor Young sent 11p a large portion of the year's emigration from the States, most- lv American families who had gathered on the frontier in Missouri during the several preceeding years of removal of the communities to Utah. Of the Goodyear claims, Captain Brown retained only two or three hundred acres and, without price or question of their rights, allowed l1is fellow colonists to settle in the country. By 1850 settlers had liegun to establish claims in the sections now known as Slaterville, North Ogden, llintah, llarrisville and Riverdale. It was also in 1850 that a man ll1lI1lCll Stuart accidently shot llll lndian chief in llarrisville and ma11y ofthe settlers had to leave their lands and remain in the lfort at Ogden for safety from the irate natives who attacked the settlement of North Ogden in their search for Stuart. ln 13:1 the Spanish wall was huilt around Ogden for protection as population had so increased that the stockadc was inadequate. THE GOLDEN SPIKE SOCIETY lt is May lf, the school season of .gg is lmrought to a close with many happy memories of school social events in my mind. l open a smlll chest and as I lift the Iitl, faded Howers and crumpled dance cards are revealed. l pick up one and then another and still another. Here is one that brings to my mind the delightful Get-.-Xcluainted dance sponsored lay' the Student Council for the purpose of having all students, new and oltl, mike new acquaintences and renew oltl, for the coming school ye.u'. The next represents the I . lf. .-X. Ball and l'ilUWCI' Show. Ir provetl to lie the lovliest and gayest Ball in the history of the cluli. And here is a small red and lwlacli tilslwon that recalls clearly to my mind the delightful fliristmas party sponsored hy' the l'ep flulw antl S. S. XV. Cluli. 'lihe next card reminds me that Io-it proved to lie very successful year for Matinee dances. 'lihe Senior Matinee was sponsored to raise funds for the Senior Gift, and was one ot' the lsest parties till the year. What is this? The card ot' the Sophomore llop. 'lihe Sophomore's proved themselves capalile ot' carrying on school social affairs and activities at lN'el1er lligll School in coming years. VVl1at school year would lie complete without a very deliglitliul Girls' Dance? 'l'he dance ol- this year with its streamline hearts and tiny sparkling cupitls matle a perliect liaclsfgrountl for the very charming Xlasine lloman. who was chosen Miss We-lver , and our handsome Ullappy lYarrior, james Colletti. 'lihe dance this year was quite uni.iue and Iiar surpassed the Cupid's Hall of preceding years. One glance at the next card carries me away to a lialmy, llawaiin at- mosphere. On :Xpril io, we all spent a delightful evening on the shore-1 otigay llawan. liut l ani awakened Irom my dream and reinintled that in reality it was the 'lunior Prom that carried me to the pleasant Isles ot the Pacific. 'liheothercards and souvenirsin the chest remind me of the less impor- tant social activities in the form ol' clulw parties ol' various types, such as, parties, theater parties, hikes and dinner parties. 'l'hese events not only helped to enrich my own life hut also those oliother participants. I close the Intl ol the chest and place it hack upon the shell where students may, for years hence, open and he reminded ol' their hippy' ex' periences at lvelier. ,..Y - , - 1. lui-1 1 '1- , L-- SOCIETY I . lf.
