He had the responsibility of encouraging cooper»» non between the growing staff, faculty, and stu- dent tody. To begin the year there were 240 members of the faculty and an unprecedented 7,000 students. Campus expansion was the mam project of the year. The new library, the cellar theater, the little theater and the arts building were all completed and functional under h» administrational year. These were just the beginning. Plans got under way for a $3.500,000 science building, the ad- ministration building, and a maintenance Kidd- ing. Next, tlie expansion of the Union Building and doubled capacity of campus housing were decided upon. In spue of hi busy schedule, the President was always willing to take a personal interest in the students. He and his wife quite frequently at- tended club banquets spons events, and special events such a the dedication of the new library. Their spirit and interest promoted close fnend- ships on campus. 14

Dr. Clarke continued ro fulfill his duty as the Dean of Faculty, bringing a closer uniry between the instructors and the college administration. As chairman of the ad- ministrative council, he presided at each meeting with the intent of coordinating the various campus activities with both the students and the administration. This council, which was composed of individuals repre- senting each division of education on campus and also members who were connected with the high administra tional duties, was the only organi:cd body to combine both of these representative groups.
