Who! About Webberville? In 1852 Sllas Alger bu1lt a small saw mill at what IS now known as Podunk but later moved It to Sectron 10 Leroy Townshlp Upon the death of Mr Alger hrs son m law H P Webber contlnued the bus1ness The government bu1lt a post offrce and a vlllage was started In 1852 the Detroxt Howell and Lanslng plank road was bu1lt Between F owlervllle and W1ll1amston a dlstance of eleven m1les there was no place for the farmers to market thelr stock timber and gram so the rallroad company told the farmer that they would bu1ld a statlon and an elevator rf some farmer along the l1ne would donate the land for a s1te Hugh Webber offered to donate a narrow str1p of land between the old plank road and the rallroad but xt was not large enough to plat for a vrllage George Galusha bought some land of Mr Webber platted a few lots and bu1lt a house on the proposed sxte A school house was also bu1lt Everythlng looked favorable for a vlllage and Mr Webber was ready to plat and sell lots when McPherson Brothers who owned the land east of h1m saw a great opportunxty to sell their trmber so they offered the rallroad com pany a better s1te and more land for a vrllage so the statlon was located one half mile east of the flrst s1te The McPhersons cut roads through the brush and tlmber lard out sltes for publxc bulldlngs and platted 143 lots They bu1lt the flrst wooden store on what IS now Grand Rrver and Maln St In 1872 J R Dart bu1lt a saw m1ll and a stave and barrel factory whxch was a leadmg lndustry untll the tlmber was about gone A Mr Reeder also conducted a flour mill whxch was devoted to custom work and a great con vemence to the settlers Thxs v1l1age was called Leroy but as there was another town of the same name rn the state there was confus1on 1n regard to mall express etc so the name was changed to In the meant1me the rarlroad had erected a gram elevator and used the lower part for a wa1t1ng room untxl the present depot was bu1lt Mr Dart enlarged his mrll and manufac tured barrels for Chrcago packmg houses Later he sold the m11l to Lans1ng partles who changed xt 1nto a stave m1ll In an ever growlng community lt IS frttmg that the educatxonal standards be ever ln creasmg Wxth th1s thought ln mmd we present to you the 1953 Dlxlt a pxctorxal revxew of the years aCt1V1tl6S both currrcular and soclal whlch are offered each student of Web berv1lle Hlgh School The earlxest relrgxous servlces were rn connectlon wlth the Baptrst Church The church was bu1lt and dedlcated m 1880 Rev J W Henry was pastor The Method1st Eplscopal Church was also bu1lt and dedrcated 1n 1880 Rev L H Houghton was the mmxster In 1921 under the pastorate of Rev R E Slmons the church was remodeled as lt IS today In 1903 a creamery and cheese factory was bu1lt Untrl 1876 school was taught ln the Webber school house one half mxle west of town Then the frame bu1ldmg on Grand Rrver whlch IS now the Masonxc Hall was bu1lt and used for a school bulldlng and replaced ln turn by the present brlck bulldmg I . . . . , s - - '. Who is the Board of Education? The men who make up our board of education have been residents of and around Web- berville for a number of years. Some have lived here all their lives and the others have lived here during the past two decades. We look forward to these men to give us guidance in educational activities. They have helped our school in every way possible. They at- tend the different activities of the high school and give us encouragement in all that we participate. Mr. Lou Bement. Secretary of the Board for thirty-five years, is a farmer outside of Webber- ville. Mr. Laurence Crandall, President, is a contrac- tor and much of his work is centered around Webberville. Mr. Phil Millis, one of the trustees, has a farm south of Webberville. Mr. Clarence Reynolds, Treasurer, is a Standard Oil distributor.
