OFFICERS ' President Virginia Adams Vice'President Carl Gutzler Secretary and Treasurer Imogene Lane Student Council Mildred Perkins Clyde Standerfer Spofzsor Helen Hicks FLOWER: Iris and Suapdragous COLORS: Gold and Maroon MOTTO: Ou the youth of today lies the democracy of tomorrow. Freshman Class History 'Our little band of freshmen entered this wonderful higher institution of learning in September, 1943, with a total of twenty-three. We received the nick- name of green freshmen, but we didn't mind that, because we knew we were. Part of this was overcome when we became accustomed to the regulations and rulings of our high school. Our class was fortunate in being the first to begin its career in the new building. At the beginning of the year there were twenty-three of us, but some have moved away and others have quit school to take jobs: so we are closing the year with only nineteen-six girls and thirteen boys. Most Of our number were from Bluford and Markham City schools, but we were glad to welcome those from others: since our philosophy is the more the merrierf' We thought school was going to be lots of fun. but soon found that it wasn't as funny as we had anticipated, for the following days were filled with work as well as play. During the first part of the year, we had to keep running from the higher grades. At least we did until we had our initiation. Lately it seems as if the upper classmen must have gotten tired of picking on us, because they have quit. Maybe the joke is on them, we may still be green,', for we don't know when to stop eating. For a few weeks during the winter season, we had thirty minutes at noon. This enabled those who were working to make the four o'clock shift, and the rest of us to get home and have our work done before dark. As the days and weeks went by, the freshmen class made its effort toward helping the war effort by collecting scrap, fats, and victrola records, and saving needed articles to help out during the shortage and to put a few pennies in our treasury. We were quite successful in this. Now as we are leaving the freshman year, we know that our fun and learn- ing have just begun in Bluford High. We are trying hard to make a better world by living up to our class motto- On the Youth of Today Lies the Democracy of Tomorrow. BOB STONE, Historian. The 1944 Web 19
