First and foremost, it is the record of the year. A successful book rnust give a complete review of all student activities, from football to trisbee and debating to dancing. The yearbook rnust also be interesting and entertaining not only to the students and faculty, but also to those who know nothing about the school, in short, a work of some literary merit. Finally, a theme must be found that will unify the book. These are the objectives we have tried to keep in mind while planning this annual. It is with a great deal of pride that we, the class of '58, present El Espeio - l958 in hi ti - the record of our year in sight and sound. 4 I , 21 Q, W W l qn.' ' 4 rv?- un Aa 1-3 I 1 SAL.--7 r. Meanwhile back at the school, the members participated in many varied extracurricular activities. In their wanderings, they inspected the Griffith Plan- etarium and took a peccary trip to Barstow. During the science lab period on Sat'- urday morning the eighth grade made frequent ex- cursions in the general area of the Pomona Valley. On these excursions the mys- teries of rivers, weather, land masses, inundations, igneous, metamorphic, sed- imentary materials and soils were investigated. ln ad- dition the depths of the heavens came under their scrutiny through the lens of Mr. Alf's telescope. The eighth graders enthusi- astically participated in the Choir, Rifle Club, Model Club, and the Outside Reading Club. - MW!! Wm ' 6 2 39 SuCfzGTfv:uS i7Q7L 'f .SQL C0 s ZX? I 3, . . f f SEATED: L. Follow- ing this line of reasoning, slightly fewer than one third of the school were exposed to the insides of a frog in Biology. A few errant schol- ars delved into Modern His- tory. Sophomores slaved over quadratic equations and strange graphs in Al- gebra ll. They met Benia- min Franklin and assorted marine creatures lincluding a white whalel in English ll. In addition strange explos- ions were heard in the vi- cinity of the lower tin shacks lundoubtedly of Sophomore originl. Besides a fire-fight- ing mission sans fire, they were ably represented in all sports, in the Choir, the Electronics Club, and most other extracurricular activi- ties. A few of them attempt- ed to construct a swimming pool in the region of the Guayules, but this plan was swamped. The governing oligarchy was: Kim Gaynor, president, Carl Hoag, vice- president, Jeff Smith, sec- retary-treasurer, Mr. Perry, adviser. '60 9 s Q., ?a -f ' f -.1, 1 'l '-. What has the class of '59 been up to this year? In physics lab they investigat- ed the weight which had to be placed in a cart and the angle of the inclined plane which would allow the cart to demolish the opposite wall. Non-Euclidian minds struggled with geometry and discovered many varied uses for the compass. iStudy Hall still bears the marks.l ln English Ill along with Shakespeare and lbsen they discussed the relative merits of socks and handkerchiefs. Here they went their sep- arate ways to Paleontology, French, Modern History, and Latin. Friday nights Juniors orated in Debating Society, clowned in their choir stalls, blew out fuses in Electronics Club, and read lboth inside and outsidel. They com- posed the maiority of the football team, and could be found daily in uniform chewing their fingernails. Junior cagers were the backbone of the basketball team, and strong Junior arms bolstered the baseball team. They elected three class officers, but we will not mention them, other than to say that Ray Lind- quist, Jim Hall, and Tom Kersten did not buy class rings. Mr. McMillin served as class adviser. This year's production consisted of three scenes chosen from Caesar which clearly and forcefully showed the development of the con- spiracy. The play is carried by Cassius, Brutus and Casco. With the cast molded into believable Romans by Mr. Boyne, the production was delivered to the stu- dents at a Sunday night vesper service. Although the conspirators succeeded in killing Caesar, the drama society, from all criticism, left Shakespeare unmur- dered, and the performance was ad- iudged by all to be a success.
