No one is quite the same after making The Webb Schookxhis home. Time will tell us howqim- portant Webb has been to usp it impossible to tell now exactly what we have gained from our ex periences. Most will look back years here as some of the hap- piest. Webb is a unique place. Our school has a proud history, It was founded on principles of honor that still serve as the basis for the school todayo webb's Board of Trustees is com- posed of men and women who are truly interested in maintaining those principles of Sawney Webb is on and others who were so importantm to the school in its early years: M QW 5 5 wifi.. 2 f . , f V? .nm , VM X .gg vw-Q W nga. , ,,..,- 4' , , an Q if W' -- W' ' A There have always been difficult times in Webb's history, and this year was certainly no exception. We saw signs of division over issues. This was not rea ly bad, but unfortunately students felt some reverberations. At Webb there are difficult times that we always remember, but there are also the happy times that we cannot forget. These pleasant moments may be different for each person, but whatevert ey may be they will remain with us long after we have left. One of the most famous aspects of Webb is its location and surroundings. Bell Buckle is more than just a little town in Tennessee, it is the home of The Webb School. Webb is an imlportant part of Bell Buckle, and Bell Buck e is an important part of Webb. The students of the school and the people of the community often form ties that are special to both. The pleasant lifestyle of the community can be felt on the campus. Lf iW5?W9Q ,3?f' QM 5 1 QW? 1535 ,AL 1 : JM ff ' 1:5-5,1 1 :EN ., Q W ,H 'QHQQWE 1 -2 . Mm, f:,:,,,..., . This feeling is the product of the uniqueness of the schoo . The real uniqueness of Webb is not founc in its location, history, or events of the year. The unique factor in the Webb exoerience is, of course , the oeople. The oeople of Webb make its wistory come a ive, the people of Webb make its location special, the people of Webb lead us into the ever-important cifficult circumstances as well as the happy ones. We learn from each other invaluable lessons that vvill be with us a vvays. Among the special people of Webb are those vvho form the foundation of the school--the faculty, staff and acministration. They are not only the ones vve learn from academically, but they are also our examples. Some members of the faculty vve hardly knovv, but every student has his favorites with whom he has become friends. Each faculty member is important not only for the job he performs, but also for the close relationship with certain students. The most important group among the people of Webb is, of course, the students. At Webb there exists a society vvhich is separated from that of the outside. lVlost students join the society, but some do not. Those vvho do not join miss an opportunity to take advantage of an im ortant aspect of their Webb experience. 'At Webb there are relationships between students closer than any they have ever before experienced. These relationships grovv as a result of each boarding student being put into the situation he finds here at Webb. Each student lives with others, and each cares about the others. One is not lost in the crovvd, and each one is an individual essential to the vvhole. The students here are conscientious workers vvho believe in doing their best. This can be seen academically, but it is also evident through the efforts of those who are articipants in the different clubs and organizations andllthose vvho are athletes. They have made great achievements that the entire school can be proud for. There are those who are apatwetic, but the majority are not. We sometimes only notice those vvho are apathetic, because they are not going along with the majority in trying their best in all twings. But it is that very type that can be changed so much by Webb. lt would diminish one of Webb's greatest services to indiscriminately refuse admission to twose vvho need extra help. V35 f-W r , X.. E ', . 5M,,QM1. , h 12 Webb is not made for everyone, but it certainly has much to offer. To those who are lucky enough to experience Webb, it becomes an important part of their lives. Webb is a unique schoolc, and its uniqueness is its people -- the faculty and staff, the students, the participants, and the athletes. THE ACULTY 84 STAFF 1- 24 M. I was very happy because I perferred to be in a southern state. Since I live in a metropoli- tan area in France, I was pleased to have the opportunity to live in a rural community. Whenl discovered that I was to be per- mitted to attend Webb School, I knew that my school year would be very different since Ihad never attended a small school. During this year at Webb I have found the faculty, staff and students to be very open and friendly. I have formed friendships which I will cherish the rest of my life. I've seen a wonderful land, and the people were even better than the land, When I think of them, I vvant to sing. James Nlichener ,NX ogwffa What we are is God's gift to us. Webb has put me into the position of making my own decisions. Even though they may not always be the right decisions, they are mine and thus enable me to be my own man. l have also been given the opportunity to play basketball at Webb. When I first came to Webb I wasn't interested in playing this sport, but Coach Johnson worked with me and has made me into a decent ballplayer. I really appreciate what he has done for me. In addition to Coach Johnson, Jerry wartin has helped me develop my basketball skills and I also wish to thank rm. The students at Webb have meant a great deal to me, not only in the classroom, but also on the basketball court. When I come out of the locker room at game time and see these people lined up along the court cheering the team, it really makes me feel good. It makes me want to repay them for their cheers by playing my best. Of course everything at Webb has not been perfect, and some heartbreak- ing incidents have taken place -- one in particular. I do not know what will come of this, but I sincerely hope that it will be for the best, not only for my parents and myself, but also for the school. HOW LONG WILL THIS.. . ...GO ON. Wwe i This year has held some good memories and some bad. ln all truth, there may have been more bad, but . . . When the good was good, it was REALLY GOOD! Loo ing back, memories come to mind of close friends and happy moments. l am sure that everyone has run over a fevv yellovv trucks, munched out on animal crackers and gone to Ovoca Falls to watch the chickens on T.V. at least once. Everyone has to light their wildfires sometime -- they just burn higher when you're on an island! Urrr. . . One cannot merely see Webb and like it. One has to experience it in order to feel the full impact. Webb does change one's way of life. It has changed my way of thinking and has given me open- mindedness that I would not have acquired elsewhere. Webb operates under rules which are rigid and, to some extent, backward. I always wanted to live in a permissive society while I was here. I got into trouble, but finally learned that one cannot only partly adhere to the civil rules. This school does create discipline. I finally learned that breaking rules is not worth the pain that it usually produces. I have had my battles wit the perfects and I still think that there are serious problems with the system. I have gained a sense of honor that will accompan me wherever I go. I have seen many changes take place dlbring my four years here. I have seen a hot-headed administrator turn into a good principal, a headmaster turn into a good public relations man, penalties finally fiting the wrongdoings and weekend leaves being unlimited, then restricted, and finally coming back to a more liberal polic . I have seen a principal go but it might be that the end dllrects and sanctifies the means . There are some things that I will never forget. Some have to go witw events at Webb and others in IVIemphis: my good times with Henry IVliller and lVIrs. Cannon's car, the lake, my friendship with Robb , Robert, Jimmy and John IThe Rastamanb, midtown Illllemphis, moving John's garden to Sherry's, Bull Sessions, lVlonteagIe Ca paradiseb, lVlrs. Atterholt and the Library, Helga's imitation of IVlick Jagger, waterfights in Rand, trying to outwit the Prefects, lVIay 21, 1975, and friendships that have been made here. Finally, the biggest thanks has to go to my parents. They have put with me during my turbulent years. But now, everything is back to normal and I know the meaning of having a close family. I can say that Webb has given me a good spiritual and educational base that I can capitalize on. Thanks, Webb. Now I believe I'm leavin', I'm in too deep and that seems easy enough for a man to Say, Well, we never would agree if we talked all night, things are gettin' kinda heaxgy, I'm travellin light and you can see I am an angel, whose wings just won't unfol , tune up my harp, polish my old haIo.-- Jerry Jeff Walker A conspiracy of silence speaks louder than words.-- John Lennon Pardon my heart, it's onl that I care.-- Neil Young 'De herb is the healing oglthe world.--Bo IVIarley in Further out than inevitable, Hallovveen's thy game. The Social Committee is a student organization which is responsible for keeping the student bod entertained, Under the supervision of Jeff Shachmut and Stan Ruplley, the committee has been aole to arrange many unusual and amusing activities. Not only has the committee provided the movies at school, but it has also arranged trips to Murfreesboro and Shelbyville for movies. Also there have been several off-campus activities such as special performances in Nashville, and a trip to Opryland. Besides its regular duties, the Social Committee, by request of Dr. Jones, vvas asked to formulate a substitute for the minivveek program vvhich would break the seemingly long Winter Quarter. Because of the spirit of the Social Committee, and also because of the response of the student body, this year's social activities have been a success. CHESS CLUB The Chess Club, under the leadership of lVlarion lVlarks Cmathematicsl, provides intramural competition in the game of chess. We try to present the best possible yearaook. There are many positions of responsibility that must be fulfilled in order to complete a book of any quality. It takes the efforts of every one of these people to make the SAWNEY interesting, different, and personakl forheach sttidentkf ' ' tt ' s sta This year, as in every year, vve had our share of problems, u is year was sufficiently interested in having a ood yearbook to put out the necessary effort to overcome these problems. Enough peoplle were sensitive to the deadline s ueeze to react so that vve could pull through. No one person could have done this jocb alone. We must have different people with different jobs to be done. These people must also be able to vvork together as a unit. The students vvho sell ads, the students vvho vvrite copy, the students who take pictures, and the students vvho design layouts must all be ab e to cooperate or nothing is accomplished. This year's staff has made quite an accomplishment, and it is hoped that this SAWNEY vvill reflect our efforts. The society's motto is Excellence, Justice, and Honor. The motto denotes excellence not onl in the sense of scholarship, but also in morals, justice not onlly in the sense of fairness but also in suitability and appropriateness, and honor not onl in the sense of honesty but also in dignity and integrity. Therefore, it is only fitting that students take an active part in it, so as to insure competent journalists for the future. The year 1976-77 savv the establishment of THE WEBB PRESS, a much-needed student news aper. Advised by faculty member James lVlacGregor, THE WEBB PRESJS develo ed into a medium for students to express their opinions and ideas in a usefuf 'ournalistic manner. The nevvspersons vvho comprise THE WEBB PRESS staff inform the student body in areas such as administrative activities, student activities, sports, theatre, movies, music, literature, politics, special events, personal intervievvs, and even gossip. The publication of THE WEBB PRESS serves a dual urpose. lt provides a reliable source of information, and gives the students who are interested in collecting this information a chance to do so. This vvas the first time that most of the staff of THE PRESS has worked on a nevvspaper. Undoubtedly, this publication will continue to grovv and progress, performing its vital function at Webb. The ORACLE kept its literar format this year, although a few small changes were made. lt was decidled that we would choose a central theme for each magazine, our first theme was the South . There was more non- fiction in this ORACLE than in previous ones. lt took the form of book reviews, movie reviews, and essays. lnitially, student involvement in the ORACLE was not outstanding, but it increased as the year progressed. The staff was again small, but it was a hardworking staff. The members of the ORACLE had a deep commitment towards excellence in writing, and they hoped that in years to come this mommlitmient would be carried on by other students under the leadership of r. up ey. Webb has an intra- mural sports and talent program known as House Competition in which the stu dent body is divided into four houses' -- the Barons, Boogers, Crabs, and Fu Babs. There is also informal recreation such as games in the dell and the gym swimming, and various other activites I' CG Soc iii' H.L.vJ. ? With five starters from the previous year's team and many other eager players, the Feet looked optimistically toward the start of the season. Although they lost their first game to Tennessee Temple, the Feet went on to be- come a formidable opponent of the best soccer teams in the South. Having a very successful season, the Feet compiled an impressive record of 7 wins and 2 losses, securing themselves a place in the Dixie Conference Championship. The first game of the Championship ended with the Feet defeating Grissom High School of Huntsville Alabama 3-O. The team is better in some respects than it has been previously -- itsroffense is, in Coach Johnson's vvords, explosive .Wit1 an improvement in the scoring, the Webb team vvould have good chances in the regional p ay- offs. The leading scorer this year is Jerry Vlar- tin, followed by David Boyd vvho is the leacing rebounder. ' The defense plays basically a man-to-man game, but a lack of quickness threatens to force a zone defense. Probably the most notable success of this season has been the vvinning of the T.P.A.C. Tournament. During this tournament, Jerry Martin was designated the lVlost Valuable Player of the tourney, and David Bo d and James Potts both were chosen as All-Tlburna- ment players. Also Gene Higgins and Chip lVlonk played an extremely important part in the victory. t is also worth noting that a vvinning team is more than the five starters, there must be substitutes. During the T.P.A.C. Tourna- ment, the Webb subs played an integral part in the vvin. The Webb Feet basketball team has come a long way in its seven-year history. This sea- son vvas certainly one of the best. 127 gf: 129 Tennis As you gaze across the open fields of Bell Buckle, ou can notice the grass turning green and the fkowers popping up everywhere. What does this mean? T is means that spring is here and that the great Webb Tennis Team under Coach Bob Gay will be hitting the courts soon. Look out folks because this year's team looks meaner than any tennis team in Webb's history! With the combination of last year's skill and the potential of new members, the Webb Tennis Team will go to the top! .mf I-,ww . win, K in Vx it 131 B 5 S , we-11132 ,I--114, Sd y 1 ang, ine Y Heal ' Foos , A 127 S CHURCH 109 W 7 II ST !
