Dur- ing America's history, we have had to fight for the preservation of freedom in our land and around the world. Threats from within, during the Civil War, and threats from fascism and communism abroad have cost thousands of American lives so millions could live in a free and democratic society. We indeed, are thankful for the sacrifice Americans throughout this 200 years have made in order Io preserve the Unioni' and en- sure our right to rule our own destiny. ff: , 7 HN I I I UNM 4 L Y , 3 if INS TI TU TI ONS OF FREEDO Our national capital has great value as being the representative city of the United States. The actual process of maintaining the Spirit of '76 and the in- stitutions of freedom are essentially in the hands of our national government. Through the election of our national senators, representives and the President of the United States we are able to have a voice in the ad- ministration of America's political and governmental affairs. Thus., institutions and their functions are vital to representation in our federal government. S YM BOL OF FREEDOM Several historical fi ures in our herita e have served as g g reminders to us of what our governmental system can be. Symbols such as Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Kennedy are but a few who demonstrated what a little enthusiasm and effort can bring forth. Our na- tion is based upon a foundation of ideals. Building upon these ideals, we, as a people, have created a nation as strong, in reality, as those ideals. Stability, equality, and freedom have withstood the test of time and these representative symbols will forever serve as examples to young Americans that things can be improved. As Robert Kennedy stated, Some men see things as they are and say why? I dream things that never were and say, Why not? .eff llll I0 llllllf M..- 0 nf NN 'lf KU! y 4 IIIWWX 6' nl 2 2 I Qlx 9 . 1 mmf fill f L 5. Q W4 Y? But, more important than the actual freedom is the obligation of responsibility that comes with this freedom. We, as Americans, have a multitude of responsibilities and these responsibilities are international in scope. Initially, the responsibility to be in- formed voters is mandatory to a successful operation of govern- ment. And finally, with our military potential, the responsibili- ty of peace in the world lies in our hands. We, the yearbook staff of Webb City High School, perceive the Spirit of 76 as being not only a spirit of freedom but a responsibility of this spirit to he informed high school students and good American citizens. Students Voice pinions Town meetings were the essence of democracy when our country began in 1776. Likewise at W.C.H.S. a form of town meeting exists that permits each student citizen the right to voice his or her opinion about school policy. This organization, sponsored by Mr. Waller Cochran, is our Student Sentate. The right to vote has always been an important element of our society, it is also important here at Webb City High School. The campaign for Student Senate officers resulted in the election of, fClock-wisej, Toby Bottom, Secretary, John Wynne, President, Wes Waggoner., Reporter, Susan Campbell, Vice-Presidentg and Kent Williams, Treasurer. Leadership and innovation for W.C.H.S. has traditionally been the responsibility of the Student Senate. Democratically selected class representatives met regularly decided the policy of Webb City High School during the ,76 year. 'ke as pm Pi ir D515 ' 'I , Q -Q iii' 71112114 -'I fff X-wg, f QQ Mug X A? Leaders such as Abraham Lincoln, Harry S. Truman, and John F. Kennedy will always be remembered as reat leaders in our American history. Our 1976 School Ecard will long be remembered for its foresight in the building of a new swimming pool for Webb City. Through twelve years of non-directed leadership the Webb City community remained as one of the only communities in the area without a local swimming pool. The city fathers and citizens could not agree on a course of action to solve the problem. In late 1975 the school board took 35350,- 000 of Municipal School bonds, applied with 8100.000 from the federal government to build a pool which could be used by Webb City High School and also the public. Garrison Leads Team Although losses were greater than victories Coach David Sallee's girls tennis squad emerged from the season with many fond memories and hopes for retur- ning girls that next year will be seasoned athletes. With this being the first year for girlls tennis at Webb City High School the girls supported a 1-6-1 record but have seven girls returning to comprise next year s squad. Leading the girls efforts was senior Georgina Garrison with a 6-2 mark throughout this year's competition. 105 106 SCHOOL TENNIS TEAM . . . New Sport Added Tennis completed its first year at Webb City on a very optomistic note as most all of the matches played were close. The only problem which faced the team was lack of courts on which to ractice. For its first year in ex- istence, the school purclhased new sweat suits and tennis shirts for the netters. Since the team is graduating only two seniors, Rick VanPelt and Stan Herrin, the remainder of the squad of 12 will be returning next year. The team was comprised of Brad Byler, Larry Handlin, Rick VanPelt, Stan Herrin, Mark Poole, Brad Harding, David French, Shawn McCallister, Roger Clark, Frank Martin, David Bruner, Keith Darby and Coach David Sallee. fad E: L. Their seasonal record of 2-6 did not do them justice as they dropped several close and exciting games. The highlight of the year was the defeat of Jasper who was seeded third in tournament play and carried an 8-1 seasonal lo .
