Our new Junior High School, located on the corner of Washington and First Street, is one of the fine examples of Webb City's ever improving school system. Bonds for this building were voted in the spring of 1958, construction began im- mediately, and the classes moved in in March of 1959. With the opening of the new building, congestion was reduced in the high school and the junior high students started receiving the benefits of a modern, well-equipped school building. A core class enjoys the benefit of a spacious well-equipped class room. 4 l Page 22 guifchng mahL5 lqfogredd A Junior High science class conducting experiments with their new modern equipment. Many of the girls attended the district F.H.A. meeting licld in Sarcoxie. They pre- sented Elvis Mesley and the Chipmunks , among many other amusing characters in an as- sembly presented for the Sr. Hi. students. Their true Christmas spirit was displayed when they distributed two Christmas baskets to the needy families. Their spring sock hop concluded their activities forthe year. The W Club of '59, under the sponsorship of Coach May, consists of 24 members, 11 of which were initiated in the annual initiation held on March 23rd. Some of the activities of the W Club this year have included: Sale of schedule cards for Football and Basketball, sponsoring the Annual Junior High Basketball Tournament, and, last but not least, the annual initiation. In reward for their fine sportsmanship and the fine exhibitions of their talents in various games, held throughout the year, the annual W Club banquet was held in their honor which completed the activities of the W Club for this year. Secretary Susan Degraffenreid ..,.....,.., Reporter This year the main project of the Senior High Student Council has been the purchase of fences for the campus. This is still a part of the landscaping program started last year. Another new project of the Council was the sale of student directories. These were made by the members and sold to the students. Again this year they also provided beautiful Christmas decorations for the second floor hall. This year for the first time our Student Council sent several representatives to the state meet at Springfield. Also this year the officers were elected by the student body rather than by the .Council itself as in the past. They were voted on last May and have served all this year offices. We, the King Jack Staff, are proud to present the 1958-59 King Jack to the students of Webb City High School. We have worked to make this year's annual the best. We have worked at concessions, football games, sponsored dances, and sold ads to make this ycar's annual possible. We are proud to be the first, in our knowledge, to have a hard back cover. We hope you enjoy this new addition. So as we add another yearbook to our collection, we, the staff, are happy to have recaptured precious moments and happenings of the school year, through the King Jack of '58-'59. The Cardinals, continuing their winning streak and boosted by the public, raced on to win conference games from Lamar, Monett, Cassville, Aurora, Mount Vernon, and right up to Carthage who was then our elose rival for the Championship of the Big Nine Conference. Playing under a handicap, the Cards played a very good game, but were unable to hold the Car- thage Tigers. Not giving up their confidence or their old School Spirit the Webb City Cardinals streaked on to win games from Altamont, Carl Junction, and then Nevada, to come face to face with Neosho with whom we were tied for second place in the Big Nine Conference. The Webb City-Neosho game proved to be one of the most exciting games in Webb City's basketball history. The game was close and could have toppled for either side right on to the very last seconds of the game, when Jerry Buchanan dunked in a field goal and Webb City won the game 49-48. This same night, Carthage suffered a loss at the hands of the Nevada Tigers, thus making Webb City and Carthage co-champions of the Big Nine Conference, with Neosho and Nevada taking back seats. Inspired by their good fortune, Webb City moved into the Class L Regional Tournament with much enthu- siasm and confidence. In the opening games Webb City trounced over Nevada to meet Joplin in the semi-finals. The Joplin Eagles, not expecting a close contest, were caught off their guard and were given a run for their money. Webb City, playing magnificent ball, gained the first lead and kept it right on up to the third quarter, when the lead changed hands many times and the game grew very tense for all those involved. The Cardinals held them right on to the last second when it appeared that the game would end a tie. However, one of the Joplin Eagles finding an opening made a basket and gave Joplin the victory. The '58-'59 basketball season proved to be a very highly successful season for Webb City since our real contenders, the Joplin Eagles, placed second All-State. May we look forward to our next season and hope that it proves successful as the '58-'59 season has been. For Jerry Buchanan the season was capped by his being named to the All-Conference Team.
