It's been quite a year, hasn't it? You're a different person than you were last fall. A lot has happened to you, a steady grind of classes, a crowded schedule of meetings, elections to various organizations, ball games-so many things that all the time were changing you, however, imperceptible. While you're taking inventory of the past year, don't leave out the things that a year-book can't record, the fun you have just being with the other kids, the new friends you've made, the moments of laughter and sadness that we have shared. No need to be dismayed, however, because we couldn't capture the intangibles. There was such a number of things to record with just words and photographs that we could only summarize them. So turn the page, fit the proper key to the doors, and begin a resume of Webb City High School from summer, 1955, to spring, 1956. . Page WEBB CITY ON THE AIB CHANNEL 7, KOAM-TV SEPTEMBER 22,1955 Webb City High School was on the air to initiate a series of programs featuring the various high schools from the district and also to advertise the first home football game the following night. The Pep Band, directed by Arthur Poole, and composed of the following members: Carl Ard- rey, Anne Clark, Roy Copple, Shirley Cruse, Jerry Dodson, Richard Giles, Joe Heiser, Connie Her- ron, Bill Huff, Joe Hulsey, Carol Hutchinson, Shirley Martin, Jerry Meslin, Judi Pickett, Jo Ann Rutherford, Cary Smart, Don Smith, Sandra Tomlinson, and Lonnie Wood gave pep and color to the program. The Cheerleaders--Alice Shivley, Judy Meslin, Judy Crutcher, Pat Roderique, Barbara Watrous, Sue Burris, Martha Leib, Carol Sue Johnson, and Tomi Williams gave added color and pep to the program. Others taking part in the program were: Ted Cowan, president of the student body, Coach May and his two football co-captains, Gary Goswick and Lloyd King. The program was the starting point for the fall athletic season, and for the activities which make up the many treasured memories which we hold of our school year. The opening of the foot- ball scason signaled the opening of the door to many of the memories which we shall treasure of this year at Webb City high school. On the following pages you will see other keys to memories which we have experienced in the program of our school year. For those of us who signed off' this year, and others who will tune in again next year, memories of the programs we have shared together will continue to be on our favorite channel. We leave behind us many mementos of our years at Webb City High School, and take with us many memories. We have done our part toward the advancement of our school in many fields. We have proved our music abilities to a great extent in operettas, vocal ensembles, glee club, chorus, band and or- chestra. In the dramatics department we have displayed our talents in class plays, speech contests and in our work behind the scenes. Through the years our boys have made a very good showing in the many phases of sports. And now, as we lay down the keys of high school learning and take up the keys to future knowledge through advancement in the world of opportunity, We bid farewell to our many friends who will soon follow us in this course, and we say thank you to the teachers who, with their own keys of knowledge, have laid open doors to learning and helped us across the threshold toward wisdom. -TOMI WILLIAMS age 14 CARL ARDREY-General. NATIONAL HONOR OCIETY Membership to the National Honor Society is based upon Leadership, Scholarship, Service and Character. Juniors and Seniors, who rank in the upper one-third of their class in scholarship, certainly work hard and look forward to this high achievement, which is one of the highest honors that W.C.H.S. awards its students. These students are to be congratulated for their fine work and high honors. We have 22 members this year, consisting of 17 Seniors and 5 Juniors, which makes up fifteen percent of the Senior Class and five percent of the Junior Class. Members were chosen by a committee of six faculty members and selections were made on the point system. The annual banquet was held this year at the Central Methodist Church on May 3. After the banquet the initiation ceremony and a reception were held. We are ardent supporters of, and active participants in all school activities. Our Junior boys have shown their skill and sportsmanship in athletics. Our girls zealously urged them on to victory. We have shown our musical talent in the vocal and instrumental departments and the Senior High Operetta. Many Juniors have inspired greater activity in the Speech Department. Acting ability was shown in our Class play, The Imaginary Invalid , and the three one-act plays given by the Speech Class. The Juniors have been Well represented in Speech and Debate tournaments. Even though there are groans or sighs of dismay when assignments are made, we are striv- ing to become the Mighty seniors of 1957. As far as We're concerned the cheer-leaders from our class are tops and have helped our school spirit considerably. The queen and her attendants entered the room through a door draped in blue to represent a memory book . As the girls stepped from the book, they were met by their escorts, then they proceeded to the throne at the other end of the room. The throne, a chair of beautifully carved dark wood, was located on a grass covered platform, under a canopy of blue and white streamers and against a blue background. Behind the throne hung a large silver key which represented the key to our memories . Two chairs were placed on either side of the platform for the attendants. Palms and baskets of large white mums completed the lovely setting. The processional, a medley of memory songs, was played by the Senior Quintet: Gary Smart, Carl Ardrey, Ted Cowan, Richard Giles, and Jay Wolcott. First to step from the Memory Book was the queen attendant, Miss Sue Anne Holt. She was met and escorted to the coronation stage by Vernon Barrow. Miss Holt wore a gown of delicate pink net, with pearl necklace and bracelet, and carried a nosegay of pink and white carnations. Next in the procession was Miss Elois Boyer, escorted by Lloyd King. Miss Boyer wore a formal of white lace draped with red taffeta, rhinestone necklace and white lace mitts. She carried a nose- gay of red and white carnations. She was followed by Miss Eleanor Gibbons who was escorted by Bob McLemore. Miss Gibbons wore a formal of aqua taffeta and net. She carried a nosegay of pink carnations. Next came Miss Joyce Mosher wearing a mint green formal with white accessories. She was escorted by Karl Johnson and she carried a nosegay of pink and white carnations. ,The girls in their lovely formals made a perfect setting for Queen Kathleen who was escorted to the throne and crowned by Ronnie Bottom, president of the Senior Class. Her floor length formal was of white net and taffeta, set off by rhinestones. She carried a bouquet of American Beauty roses. Walking just in front of the Queen and her escort were the flower girl, Coleen Bishop, and the crown bearer, Greg Bruff. Tom Beisner, co-editor of King Jack, acted as master of ceremonies. Following the crowning of the Queen, a short program was given. First on the program was a vocal solo, It's Almost Tomorrow , by Tomi Williams. She was accompanied by Eleanor Gibbons. This was followed by a tap dance by Carole Jones, accompanied by Mrs. Vincent Looper. Mary Curtis James, co-editor of King Jack, sang Moments to Remembern, accompanied by the band. A few numbers by the band concluded the special program. Page 42 KI G JACK The doorway is open. The Key is in your hands. The purpose is to promote dramatics in the high schools over the entire country. Troupe 608 of the Webb City high school was organized in 1945, and has been quite active since that time. This year students have shown unusual interest in dramatic activities in two operettas, in the junior and the senior class plays and a speech class play. To belong to this honorary society one must have at least ten points in some phase of dramatic production. IUIUIS lloyer. C. O. E. Symphonic? Rhythmical? Swing? Our musical repertoire has made us quite a versatile aggregation this year. Playing has been more fun than ever. We really did Strike up the Band in playing Gershwin, and in Beethoven's Eroica . We hit a new high in the estimation of our friends in the band assembly, and we think it means a lot to be appreciated by our own student body. School sponsored trips were our specialty in '56. They began with a T-V appearance at KOAM, and ended with our annual Z4-hour excursion to the state finals at Columbia. Our tone quality, with unheard of balance and precision, made those guys sit up and take notice. Three soloists were able to qualify for a repeat performance at Columbia. Congratulations to Sandra .Tomlinson and Richard Giles, trombonists, and Carl Ardrey, trumpeter. The appear- ance of six ensembles at various festivals, and our brass quartet, clarinet quartet and trio at the state main event makes up a good panorama of our musical picture. ORCHE TR With the membership nearing the sixty mark, the orchestra this year has taken on the pro- portions of a symphony. Under the careful guidance of Arthur Poole, director, improvement has been shown each year in its standard of musicianship until this array of musical talent has gained state-wide recognition. Four major ensembles were organized from the string choir, and eight soloists performed at festivals and recitals. Music critics and educators at the Carthage, Joplin, Springfield, and Columbia contests were lavish With praise at each performance. Gee! How did we ever achieve such an Orchestral sound? Hard work, sure, but Worth it. Here are some names to remember who received outstanding criticisms for solo and ensemble participation: Sherry Elswick, Judy Cartwright, Darlene Tyndall, Steve Byers, Virginia Easley, Susan DeGraffenreid, Sandra Tomlinson, Janelle Shirk and Deanna Richardson. We will always remember The Breeze and I , really a part of the Andalucia Suite , our contest selection. The expected farewell to the seniors by the orchestra at Baccalaureate and Commencement will be the culmination of a very successful year. CARDINALETTE CLUB Those lusty yells coming from the Webb City section at ball games belong to an organized troupe of Senior High School girls who call themselves the Cardinalette Club. Organized principally to give sup- port to the cheerleaders and our W.C.H.S. athletic teams, this club has helped to insure the success of many activities, such as clever pep assemblies, pep rallies, and displaying good sportsmanship at games. Leaders of this group are: Sharon Rackley, presidentg Kay Hudson, vice-presidentg Beverly Breeden, secretary: Carol Burk, treasurerg and Mrs. Marleen Kirkendoll and Miss Mynatt as sponsors: THE CHEERLEADERS The Webb City Cheerleaders inspire school spirit and lift the morale of the teams by their splendid performances at games and clever pep assemblies. With Mrs. Kirkendoll as sponsor and Barbara Watrous and Tomi Williams as captains they have made an excellent showing. Even though the loss of Martha Leib, who became ill and Barbara Watrous, who moved away, left only seven girls to carry on their many activi- ties, they have done well and we are proud of them. They were praised by students from other Big Nine schools for their brilliant uniforms and novel yells. They have done much to instill school pride in the hearts of the students.
