We have been richly rewarded for our earnest pursuit of knowledge as a preparation for our future careers. Even though we admit it ourselves, we have achieved much in extra-curricular activities which develop our talents, for the Seniors have won lau- rels for our school in oration and debate, in instrumental and vocal music, and in basketball. As we shall reminisce in the future, our red-letter days of this year will have been the day the new gymnasium-auditorium was openedg the elaborately- staged crowning of the Queen of King Jack, Senior Tacky Day with the varied and freakish costumes of all of us-even our sponsorsg the skilled presentation of Mother Is A Freshman as our Senior Class Playg the day on which we proudly donned our caps and gownsg the gay and colorful Junior-Senior party, the enjoy- ment of which was enhanced by the lovely girls in their beautiful dressesg then- finally the Commencement activities: Baccalaureate Sunday, Class Day, and Grad- uation-the realization of our dreams and aspirations. We are proud of the fact that we are the first class to be graduated in the new auditorium. .Though we are reluctant to leave our school, of which we shall always cherish fond memories, we look forward to doing our part to preserve the ideals of our America. the L'ca:ufif11I. Only 86 of usg but we constitute a fraction of our America's great natural resources-her youth, aspiring to great things, glory, as well as glamor. As our year draws to a close, we have memories: -Of the tense moments of the football games, in which eight of our boys were heroes, of courseg and hot dogs and cokes were the order of the evening. -Of the thrilling basketball games in our beautiful new gym when we yelled ourselves hoarse as the Cardinals made baskets, and were extremely proud of our three Junior boys on the A team, and our three spiffy cheerleaders who helped cheer us up. -Of the night of December 18, when our dramatic abilities were acclaimed by a very enthusiastic audience at our Junior class play- A Case of Springtimeng and our success enabled eight of us to become Thespians. -Of the happy and profitable hours that many of us Juniors, as a part of the vocal ensembles, the band, and the orchestra went places and won places-yea, even firsts. -Of the joy and fellowship in working together in the Student Council, De- bate, KING J ACK, CARDINAL NOTES to accomplish worthy objectives. -Of the climactic event of all-the unforgettable starry night of the Junior- Senior prom and buffet dinner, having as its colorful theme South Pacific, on which we sailed with dreamy as well as dizzy music, delicious food, and delightful entertainment. Thanks, dear sponsors and other members of the faculty, for all the memories! Aspiring to advance ltStil9lllQ-,4Il1Pl'l'1'Il The Bemzfiffzll-we have opened our yearbook with a picture in colors oi' a lovely scene not far from our town. We have worked like Trojans, especially at concessions stands at basketball games, to help finance extra features ot' our book. Our Queen contest was gratifying indeed, for 670 subscriptions were sold: and the cor- onation ol' the Queen oi' King' Jack Was pronounced by many as out of this world. So as another yearbook becomes history oi' our high school, we oi' the staff are happy to have done our part in preserving joyous and glorious moments of our school lii'e, which, recap- tured through KING JACK, will be forever near and forever dear to all ol' us. The annual social gathering of the staff' was held this year on February 11, at the hoine ol' Miss Donna Rogers, the Valentine motif being carried out in the decorations and refreshments. The Webb City debaters, with Mr. Gillman as coach, had an interesting and profit- able season this year, although they did not win any championships. The question was Resolved: That the President of the United States should be elected by a direct vote of the People. Most of the debate work of the district was done through tournaments. In the first tournament sponsored by Springfield Senior High School last October, Webb City debat- ers engaged in eight debates, winning five and losing three. This was a large tourna- ment, for many schools of Southwest Missouri and Central Missouri, and even Ottumwa, Iowa, participated. Entering the tournament sponsored by Drury College of Springfield, our debate teams won two debates and lost two. In the invitational tournament sponsored by the Neosho High School, in which some of the strongest teams of Southwest Missouri and Northeast Oklahoma participated, Webb City had a score of two wins and two losses. On March 20, Webb City was host to the Big Nine Conference. For the first time in a number of years, all the schools in the conference participated in the tournament. Neo- sho won the tournament, Webb City and Cassville tied for second place, our debaters having won six of eight debates. Because of conflicts in schedules, Webb City could not enter the Pittsburg State Teachers College tournament last fall, and the Springfield Dis- trict Tournament, April 13. In oratory, Helen Clark, Carol Campbell, Lois Danner, Sharon Black, and Betty Board participated in the American Legion contest on the Constitution. Betty Board won first place and was awarded a medal by the Darris Schalk Post of the American Legion of Webb City. 11 , , n , ease of Spl'llZqflI716 3216 JLIWMI' KISS Qjfflq lmu1c1xm1cR 18, 1953 1Jl'l'1'!'f0I'I MRS.
