A small class are we-but mighty. Just ask our towns- people about Eddie Nealy, Jim Hunter, and Gary Huffman-who this year have smashed all past records of the Big-Eight, and about Joe Grisham, who is the star of baseball! Ask our faculty about Theodore W. Palmer, who amazes all his teachers with his knowledge of literature, mathematics, and science! Or civic and other clubs about our musicians-Sandra Trimble, Gene Jeffriesf Paul Hight, Myrtle Lee Conner! Or spectators at any game about Patt Moffett and her cheerleaders, who were first in the Tournament of Champions Cheerleading Contest! Or professional photographers about Whitson Kirk and John Wallace, who have taken and developed pictures for KING JACK! Or ask the speech teach- er about our dramatic ability as displayed in our Senior play, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay. Soon we will be receiving our laurelsg for in quick succession will come Honor Assembly, Cap and Gown parades, Junior-Senior Prom, Senior picnic. Class Day, Baccalaureate, and the grand climactic event-Commencement. So with a song in our hearts, but tears in our eyes, we will leave our dear W. C., with cherished memories that neither time nor distance can ever efface. Q55 of I5 l.XNlf BM.DRlDGli--tfmiiiiivrcitzl. The new members had been selected by the faculty from the upper scholastic third of their classes on the basis of Leadership, Service, Character. After talks were given on the ideals of the Society, the newly-elected members were called to the stage by the president, and took the pledge of the society. Officers are as follows: Mary Jean Rutherford, president Whitson Kirk, vice-president Theodore Palmer, secretary Mary Ellen Dedrickson, treasurer Mr. B. M. Chancellor, sponsor. The annual National Honor Society Banquet was held on April 13 in the Home Economics dining room. The tables were decorated with lilacs and other spring flowersg and a delicious menu was served by Miss Reagan and her classes. The program of the evening consisted of slides shown by Mr. Dalton DeShazer of Joplin. Very beautiful awe-inspiring scenes of Colorado and the Canadian Rockies, Yellowstone National Park, and Grand .Teton Park, of lovely flowers in these various places, and prize winning pic- tures of flowers and scenes, were among those shown. Guests present were Mr. and Mrs. Dalton DeShazer, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Clark, Mr. and Mrs. B. M. Chancellor, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Babbitt, Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Gillman and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Mustain. fi Standinge-Ralph llickman, vice-president: Donald 'W Luziors SPONSORSI Mr. Gillman, Mrs. johns, Mrs. lihrenman NA'l'loNAl. llUNJ0R Socua'rY: Phyllis Brooks, Ruth Mary Cowardin, Donald Daniels, Ralph llickman. jerry Rusk N. Our class is large as W.C.H.S classes go-nearly 100 of us. We have proved this year that we have brains, brawn, and beauty. Our class play, Here Comes the Brides, had a capacity audience, and was a knock-out for hilarity. Three of our lads are on the celebrated A basket- ball team, and our lasses have helped the cheerleaders to jump to a new high in honorsg of the 9-member debate squad, seven are Juniors. Two Junior misses have won vocal music awards for W.C.H.S., and many class members belong to the choruses, bands, and smaller ensembles. In the ranks of those serving as Cardinal Notes reporters and those win- ning coveted memberships in Quill and Scroll are many outstanding Junior names. Some of our talented and dependable members were always busy pick- ing up the loose ends of year book activities or running up and down the stairs from the gymnasium to the auditorium on occasions such as demanded by the push and drive necessary to decorate for the Coronation of Queen of KING JACK. The colorful Spring Prom, in honor of the Seniors, which was enjoyed in the high school gymnasium on May 15, afforded a delightful climax to an eventful and successful year for the class of 1954. l s PAGE 25 lm' :Xllen f Roger ,Ninos LL 'Z L 0 Phyllis .-Xrnistrung Gary Baker Patty Ballenger Peggy Barger Martha Behymer Deyyaine Bt-isner Allen Bettis Norma Benlieltl Wayne Blantl Betty Buartl .lack Buytl Marlene Bm'-,-I' Phyllis Brtmlix Maxine Buchanan Betty Burk jerry Burk Binnie Cahill Dnrotliy Carey Boh Chancellor litltlie Cliester joy Christnian llelen Clark Binh Cult' Max Corner Ruth Mary Cmyartlin Bill Cuweii Alice Crockett llelen Cummins Otletta Danfurtl Dun Daniels linger llayis Shirley llziwsmi Neltlll klu lJt'Muss Mary louise llipley -lack Duran Nancy lillilli Gary Iilswick ,lack liitller Missy Graystun Muntfurtl llantlley Shirley llart Ann l liekam llvx'ui'ly llughcs .lam -lcslvr lhilmxs .luhns Wzimlzi -lulmslmi WL-wlcx' King llaihny liulp lJ.lx'iil l girsuii lfLll'L'll l.ipc liiullv Nlxilvii Rmiailil Nlill' Sliirluy Mcllunzilil R ic liaml Sliirlvy Nlcl .CIl1Ul'C l unix Nlvclx llill llliiiimn lliilu Miiiisim Phillip Munmn lhrrls Nvwlny ,li Zllllll' Ncwcll -Iiigiii llrmlull' lhilsy Palmcllaill lliilw llcvli Czirul lk-nec Gvrzllilim- Phillips llmviml Phillips l'hyllix l'ivi'c- Mvllvzi Piltmam llulw lqL'5llX'4l Billy Riclicy Curl Riddle Slll' llulwlls kiwzllnlllln' lliigcis Alurry Rusk llunzllil Sheets Doris Sllollp llgirlmrgi Speck llvlvn 'l'lumi4is klinimy Willizmis AllXX'j'lll Wilsun liliiiiiiiil Wiiiiiiizcr Mary lfllcn Witllcrspum-I1 llunnzi Ymt I Ralph lliclumm Q 5 5 5 4 Shirley llmllllcslmi A WP, 777' l fa' I-lineal Iiifln-xy sergt-41111 all lII'Ill5 Ilee Conner, ll'C1lNlITl'I' Slnrley XYUIIIIIZIII, sL'CI'L'IilI'y' Iiennelli Wilson, presitleiil liolw l5veri1l, xice-presiilelil Srossoks: Miss Ilerroil, Nlrs. llunler. Nothing exciting ever happens to Sophiesg We are never in the limelight like the breezy Juniors or doughty Seniors. Yet we do have our high moments. We argue excitedly in cle- Ioates, sing lustily in the choruses: we toot our horns, thrum our stringed instruments, bang our drumsg We practice endless hours in running or jumping like Br'er Rabbit, hoping to make touchdowns or baskets someday-to say nothing of studying our lessons even though somewhat spasmodically. THE SENIOR HIGH STUDENT COUNCIL, under the spon- sorship of Mr. Babbitt, has completed one of its most successful years. The Council chose this year a much larger project than usual: the purchase of a popcorn machine for the school. Although payment for it in- volved much hard work, the members discovered that the machine had paid for itself. On April 1 it was presented to the school. Other projects which the council has sponsored in- clude locker clean-ups, goal-post wrapping at the football games, and the selection of the boy and girl, for the Babe Ruth Sportsmanship Award, who have done most to promote sportsmanship in the school. Among the delightful Student Council activities this year was the annual picnic, which was held on April 10, at Scher- merhorn Park, where a menu of ham whatam , baked beans, cake, and pop, was enjoyed to the fullest and fillingest extent. UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF OUR SPONSOR, MISS STINNETT, our president, Jerry Creech, and other officers, the Junior High Student Council has experienced another en- joyable and profitable year. The members have endeavored to be of service to the school and faculty. The Council has helped to direct locker and campus clean-ups, and has supervised Junior High parties. The Council elects and sponsors the Junior High Cheerleaders, who have appeared at Junior High basketball games. Attractive in their red and white uniforms, the girls have Upepped up the crowd, cheered the boys and en- couraged them to play good games, at Carthage, in the Junior High Tournament, at South Junior High in Joplin, and in the Webb City Junior High Tournament. At Christ- mas time the group decorated first floor with a gorgeous electrically lighted Christmas tree. THE WEBB CITY HIGH SCHOOL BAND, with Mr. Arthur Poole as director, reflects school spirit by having played at the football and the basketball games: the pep band backed the basketball team by going to Columbia to the State Tournament. The band made a number of public appearances this year: parading in the W. C. Fall Festivalg playing for the llepublican rally in the gym: performing in the Kansas State llome- Coming Game at Pittsburg, taking part in assemblies given by the Music Department, and in the Spring Concert. Whitson Kirk, a trumpet soloist, attaining I rating at Neosho and Springfield contests, will enter the State Music Contest at Columbia, May 2. The band was ranked I at Neoshog and at the Joplin Music Festival, the critics praised the band highly. One comment was as follows: The director has certainly done a magnificent job with this group! The general intonation is very, very good. The instrumentation is good. This band is definitely on the upgrade, and they arm all to be congratulated. x rclzesfra THE WEISB CITY HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRA has appeared in several public pro grams this year. The group participated in the Joplin Music Festival, where they received the following criticism: Congratulations to a school that has a string program. I want to congratulate this director for having developed this organization at Webb City. This orchestra has all the elements of good orchestral style. I see no evi- dcnce anywhere of bad or sloppy technique. This group is very well-schooled, and there is an unusual amount of precision in all factors of phrasing, rhythm, attacks, re- leases, and so forth. The orchestra played for the Queen of King Jack's Coronation, assemblies giv- en by the music department, and in the annual Spring Concert. The orchestra provided the music for all of the graduation ceremonies. Under the able direction of Arthur Poole, director, the o1'chestra has advanced very far this year. The instrumental music program is not pushed ahead of other curricular subjects. Our emphasis on music is one of enjoyment, a real, vital, and worthwhile experience so that we will love good music in school and out of school, even after graduation. IMCK ROW---Nlr.
