The theme of our Keepsake yearbook is Our Town. What could be more fitting than that the 1949 KING JACK should be devoted to the beautiful little city that has fos- tered Our School through the years? Webb City is rich in tradition and color, progressive in spirit, and loyal in atti- tude toward the highest and best. Today Our School, judged by the quality of its work and the caliber of its graduates, ranks high in the educational World, partly because of the inspiration and nurture of the splendid citi- zens and organizations of Our Town. As you leaf through the pages of this yearbook, you see that the story of Our School, with our classes, our teams, our organizations, our activities, has as its motivating background-Our Town. : 1. As a class, we have produced leaders in all phases of our school life. Along the Memory Trail we pause with delight as we recall our own Junior-Senior Banquet of last year, with our gallant knights and lovely ladiesg our Senior class play, Spring Fever, presented to an appreciative full houseg the delicious banquet with highly entertaining program arranged for us by the gener- ous Junior Class, and the lovely party and prom afterwards at the Elks Hall, sponsored by the Parent-Teachers Association, our one wonderful day at Roaring River, where swimming, golf- ing and tennis were enjoyed, interrupted only by the rush of the Forty-Niners to the tables ladened with food as good as gold. Eighty-four members of the Junior class are completing their eleventh year in the process of training for future careers and good citizenship in Our Town. During this time their talents have been discovered and developed. This year seventy-eight per cent of the boys have participated in athleticsg nearly one half of the class were in vocal en- sembles, the orchestra, band, and drum corps. The Junior play, Brother Goose, was presented on December 10 to a great and enthusiastic audience. The climax of a year of profitable study and joyous activities was the Junior-Senior Banquet at the First Presby- terian church, on May 13, with an appropriate theme, The Gold Rush of 1949, which was carried out in the decorations, group singing, menu, and program. The household of the Forty-Niners formed a background for the entertainment, which included songs and dra- matic selections typical of a century ago. l'.-ion Sv 3 X UNIORS , I adn SHN 'iixx X ,Q jg Q? As a class, We have not been in the limelight so much as the sprightly Juniors or the stately Seniors. Yet, We have done our bit in the Student Council and other organizations in service for Our School and Our Town. We have furnished some stars in achievement: violin, piano, dramatics, Big-Flight Golf Champion, and three Lettermen in athletics. At Christmas, all Sophomore home rooms had a Christmas party with Yuletide decorations, programs, and refreshments. As for our class picnic I-it was an event long to be re- membered for foods that would have satisfied even a gourmand and sports that did thrill all of us. Many questions of policy, such as the length of Christmas holidays and the new absentee system this year, have been referred through the student council to the student body, in the home roomsg and the students' decisions have been reported to the administration. Four committees of the coun- cil have functioned Well: Assembly, Campus, Traffic and Projects committees. The council meets each Friday and discusses problems and policies. Each year, the council has charge of organizing the clubs and directing the registration of members. Cnce a month a locker cleanup is supervised by the council. This year, as is the tradi- tion, the Senior High Student Council sponsored a Christmas drive for food, toys, and clothing for the less fortunateg also the council decorated a float to take part in the Community Christmas project. As has been customary at Yuletide, the council decorated a large Christmas tree on the second floor. Five senior high dances were sponsored by the council, the music of one being accom- panied by video of the bands playing it. The council had charge of the Coronation of the Football Queen, and its committees Wrapped goal posts for all football games. A delegation from the Council attended the Convention of the Southwest Missouri Federa- tion of Student Councils at Springfield, October 23, and brought back many helpful reports of ad- dresses and social contacts. The annual spring picnic, held this year in April at the Carthage Mu- nicipal Park, was a delightful occasion. 46 CARRY OUT DEMOCRATIC PROCl5SSlr,S .f Hack Rme -Charles Sumpter, jimmy Cummings Cvice presiilrntl. Twenty-four members, under the thoughtful sponsorship of Miss Stinnett, comprise the Junior High Student Council, which has had a successful and happy year. The aim of the Council of '48 and '49 has been to Work for the betterment of the school and to develop a sense of respon- sibility and worthy citizenship in a democracy. Meeting once a week on Monday mornings, the Junior High Council has presented to home rooms the policies of the administration and faculty, and has planned projects for service to our school and community. The council conducted the Junior Red Cross and the Community Chest Drives in the home rooms of both Junior and Senior high schools. It also Worked with the Senior High council for the donations of food, toys and clothing in the Community Christmas project. The Christmas tree and hall decorations on the first floor were under the direction of the council, which also was generous in donating to worthy causes: nine dollars to the KING JACK fund and a similar amount for a new State flag for the flag pole on the campus. Members of the council attended the Student Council Convention at Springfield in October, and derived much benefit, both in inspiration and in enjoy- ment of associating with other groups. The organization supervised three Junior High dances dur- ing the year. The council's picnic, held on April 19, at the Carthage park, was a fitting climax to our year. Knvo .fACK Making our 1949 KING JACK hasfbeen fascinating and en- joyable, especially because of its theme, t'Our Town. We have delved into the romantic past of Webb City, studied its present day conditions and opportunities, we have made interesting contacts with individuals and organizations of our community. Through it all wc have gained a greater appre- ciation of Our Town and a broader vision of Our School as a part of our community. In the Queen Contest 900 annuals were sold. 'We decorated the stage for the Coronation of the Queen and sponsored a dance afterwards. Having charge of the concessions at the Monett basketball game, we donned aprons and sold hot dogs , coneys , cokes, candy bars-all for the benefit of KING JACK. One of the high lights of our year, which will always be a cherished memory to us, was our dinner party at Shirley Roland's home, when delicious food and delightful fellowship enlivened our more serious work of checking copy. At the Pittsburg tournament our debaters, being from out of state, received no ranking, yet much good practice. Troupe 608 of the National Thespian Society boasts thirty-three top dramatic students. Not only those actually having parts in plays, but also those on the stage crew, publicity and business directors, student directors of plays, and those appearing on assembly programs, are eligible for membership. The initiation of twenty-four new members was unique this year, being held in the form of a picnic at Wild Cat park, where each member had to furnish three minutes of entertain- ment. liarls Rozc'-l.z1vettaLonberg, Nlonzi Wilbur. They have participated in the Fall Festival Parade, Civic Community Christmas Parade, and played at a Joplin Junior College game on Webb City night. They helped in collecting donations for the Navy Mothers' Club. On Navy Day, in May, they will sell poppies in honor of World War I Veterans. OUR VOCAL lCNSlCMl3l,lCS SCORM ffl' l l'lS'l'lVfil,S llnder the direction ol' Mrs. Jack Ball, our vocal groups have gained musical education and enjoyment, and have made many public appear- ances at special invitation before clubs and other groups of Our Town and nearby towns. The mixed chorus, composed of members from the two choruses, participated in the Joplin Festival and in the contest at Monett. The smaller ensembles-trio, quartet, sextet and double mixed quartet and nonet-received excellent criticisms at the Joplin Festival. Of these, the last four made I ratings at Monett. The quartet and nonet made excellent ratings at the Springfield contest and are eligible for the state contest at Columbia. Shirley Roland, soloist, also is entitled to go to Columbia. The glee clubs gave a beautiful Christmas program and sang Christ- mas Carols through the halls during the Yuletide. The boys' chorus pre- sented at assembly a mock wedding, which was highly entertaining. The social events of the groups were the annual picnic at Carthage park, with faculty as guests, and the Santa Claus party and dance. -an Q lJOl'lll.l'I MIXICD Ql'.XllTl'1'l' I i-', :miie Hulsvy. ilnrnlon Rusk, Riclnlnl Crust-, Kenneth Jenkins, Put, Haicln-r, IH-sgL:'y Walls-rs, Jayne lVllCansm-. and Mrs. .Iam H-irolql Conv in J x GIRLS' OC'l'l'I'l' v l lg x W llls-ls, l'z1t l'l1lU'llk'l', N:-ncv L'1'4n'lw1', Jnyinx M1'i':xnsc, llorulhy lim-miis, Joan Clymzi, 1 .ln-lon Phillips. The W Club, an organization of athletes who hold letters in the major sports under the sponsorship of Coach Hunter, represents the guiding spirit of athletics in W.C.H.S. and selects the cheerleaders. The outstanding social events of their yearly calendar are the Very informal initia- tion ceremonies and the strictly formal W Club Invitational Dance. The initiation this year was very spectacular and was especially enjoyed by outsiders. The dance was a gala affair, held in the Elks' Hall, where the students and faculty Were entertained by Gene Dooley's orchestra. Our eight petite Pepper-uppers -Patty Campbell, Genile Woodmansee, Ella Kelly, Rose- mary Woodard, Mona Wilbur, Peggy Walters, Hazel Burke, and Carolyn J enkins-have added much to school spirit this year by their enthusiasm and attractivenessg their agility and eclat.
