PAT HARGIS John Myers Pat Hargis Louie Hughes Seniors Signing Of Attention please! Instead of the regularly scheduled program, a very important newscast of the Senior Class of W. C. H. S.-The News Highlights of the Year in Review-will be given by Madelyn Adamson. In September, 1947, Louie Hughes won the popular vote for president, and this tall, hand- some athlete has carried out his duties well. In sports, the Webb City All-Star football team was well supplied with seniors. Don McGaw and John Woolsey were elected co-captains of the team. The Big-Eight Basketball champs, under Captain John- SHIRLEY FERRELL BOB HICKAM ny Myers, proved to be the fastest team in the district. And now we turn from athletics to glamour. Rain failed to mar the impressiveness of the scene, when Miss Paula Fite was crowned Queen of Football at the half of the Monett game by Gene Davis, Student Council president. At a very beautiful ceremony, in an enchanted garden of rainbow colors, palms, and flowers, Miss Lois Watson was crowned Queen of KING JACK by the senior class president. With Shirley Poulson in the lead and a splendid cast of eighteen, how could our senior play, Star Dust , help getting rave notices from the critics? A most delectable banquet given us by the Juniors-a gala evening in which beauty and chivalry, as well as fun and frolic, reigned-will ever linger in our mem- ories. On Class Day we were proud as Punch of our four Honor Students-Fred, Barbara, Lois, and Joe. This is the last of a series of programs presented by the Class of '48, and looking back, we will always remember this year as one of the Best Years of Our Lives. SENIOR BEST CITIZENS TWENTY YEARS OF PROGRESS-Webb City High School and the Elementary Schools have kept abreast of the times and' shown progress in many ways. Fall-The 97 Juniors stormed W.C.H.S., September 2, and held election of class officers, however, amid stiff competition, Loomis Crandall emerged as president of the Junior class. The football season opened with a bang, the Junior class being Well rep- resented in football players, cheerleaders, and drum corps. Winter-Everyone is still talking of the successful Junior class play, Our Town . Debaters crashed the headlines when Webb City took the Big-Eight tournament and the Miami speech festival. Believe it or not, three of the group were the invincible Juniors. Spring-Well, well, in the spring a young man's fancy -but have you heard the lovely voices of our singing stars leading the vocal department? We felt very proud seeing our five members initiated into the National Honor Societyg and twelve, into the international journalistic society-The Quill and Scroll. Here we reach the greatest gala event of the year-Junior-Senior Banquet. The gorgeous gowns, Arabian Nights set- ting, the delicious food, the thrilling entertainment feverything according to Emily Postb-made such a nice way to finish the school year. Before signing off, we would like to express our appreciation to our sponsors-Miss Hammond, Mrs. Sargent, and Mrs. Hubbard-for making this broadcast possible. - lin 1917 Webb City High School became a member of the North-Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. By much effort we have continued our hzgh standing in this rating association. Today we are reviewing a few special events-special to us anyway. The Sophomore class began this year with 113 members. Immediately we elected Richard Cruse for president and got busy on activities. First, we will hear from our Sports editor. Many of the Cardinal laurels have been attained partly through the Sophie athletes: Andress, Burk, Cowen, Cruse, Day, Gilliam, McCombs, N iswonger, Morris, Spille, Wingo, and student manager, Ferris. Now, our Music critic comes to the microphone: Sophies, Sophies everywhere in the band, orchestra, drum corps, and the glee clubs. One third of the famous nonet be- long to our illustrious class: Louise Kamisar, Pat Poole, Nancy Crocker. Next, we turn the program over to the Speech department 3 here we find Jayne Mc- Canse one of the five Big-Eight Champs in debate. In the cast of The Visitor , four -out of eight were our own Sophies: Rosemary Herrod, Gene McCullough, Gordon Rusk, and Joanne Cole. Finally, let our faculty broadcast our scholastic achievements: the records show these Sophies are both wise and foolish-wise enough to outclass the Quiz Kids, and foolish! We pause here for station identification, Before signing off, we would like to express our appreciation to our sponsors: Miss Crotty, Miss Herrod, and Miss Likins. In all, we have had a very profitable and enjoyable year, we are looking forward to another active year as Jolly Juniors. So good-by and good luck! It's an honor to belong to the Senior High Student Governing Body, but honors always bring responsibilities. The thirty-eight student council members have neither shirked nor quirked in our duties. Our able sponsor, Mr. Chancellor, has led us on to bigger and better things. In addition to doing the usual work of a student council according to principles of democracy-we have sponsored dances, distributed programs and wrapped goal posts at football games, decorated a tree and the upper halls at Christ- mas timeg contributed to a new motion picture projector, a tape recorder, and flowers for KING JACK coronation. Two high lights of our interesting year have been attending the Student Council Convention at Ava, Missouri, and climaxing our social life with a food-and-fun filled picnic in April. The Junior High Student Council, of twenty-four members, under the thoughtful sponsorship of Miss Stinnett, has done much to benefit our school. The council conducted the Junior Red Cross drive in home rooms of junior and senior high, and encouraged people to make gift boxes for the Red Cross. A donation of 3535 for the moving picture machine was given by the council, which later found it appropriate to donate 9650 to- wards purchase of the recording machine. Our group helped purchase flowers for the stage decorations at the queen coronation. These things indicate the splendid Work our council tries to encourage. Q53 Like the famous Cheshire Cat, the members of KING JACK staff have'nt lost their grin, in spite of prodigious encounters with cameras and paper cutters, paste pots and ink Wells, figures and finances, dummies and proof reading-to say nothing of the brain fag incurred in our artistic and literary efforts. And the grin grows Wider as We near the end of our labors and begin to see our objectives realized. After all our gleams and glooms, We have had heaps 0' fun in Working together. The Queen contest Was thrilling beyond words and most friendly, too. A total of 880 annuals were sold as follows: Lois Watson, 308, Shirley Ferrell, 2435 Shirley Poulson, 1375 Freda Allen, 983 Zelda Mitchell, 95. We have had loyal support from students, faculty and patrons. We present this yearbook With our best wishes. Orations, readings and de- bate-all were ably presented by Webb City speech students in tournaments at Miami, Oklahomag Pittsburg, Kansas: and Springfield, Missouri. Especially in debate did Webb City shine. The question Was, Resolved: That the Federal Government should require arbitration of labor disputes in all basic American industries. Webb City teams received the highest average at Miami. The teams won the sub-regional division of the Missouri Debating League at Carthage, and took third place in the regional division at Spring- field. Finally We crowned With success our year of hard work by gaining the Big-Eight Championship over Monett, the winner of the Northern district. Per- haps our most cherished Hmusical moment was the annual candle-lighting assembly at Christmas in which all vocal ensembles and the orchestra had a part. One of the loveliest numbers was the processional of mixed voices singing Don-na No-bis Pa-cem as they ad- vanced to the stage and formed a cross out- lined by lighted candles. The trio, quartet, and sextet have been much in demand for church, civic, and social functions. These groups and their soloists, Shirley Roland and Delores Moon, received excellent ratings at the District Contest, which entitled them to compete in the State Contest at Columbia. With colors flying, music sounding clear, and drums tattooing, our snappy Drum Corps has had a very successful year, under its efficient Major, Barbara Lanhamg and with its captain, Nancy Motley, and twirlers, Betty Pryor and Helen Lowe adding to its attractiveness. It has practiced every Thursday night in the gym under the supervision of its directors, Mr. Melvin Macey and Mr. Charles Tudor, and its sponsor, Miss Mabel Likins. Our corps with the Carthage corps formed a glamorous guard of honor for the Carthage Football Queen at her Coronation on Thanksgiving Day at Carthageg the corps has participated in the Webb City Santa Claus Paradeg and has helped in collecting money for the March of Dimes for Infantile Paralysis Drive at both the Dickinson and Civic theatres. The last Saturday in May, the corps always sells poppies in honor of World War 1 Veterans. This active Drum Corps will still continue to practice during the summer months to be ready to perform in the fall. MAD Q?KP61g fe S NK NW .A Us B AHB A? tteW1 MlWt hdflje Z4 en? Only those who have earned a letter by participating in any one of the major sports can be a member of the W Club, which, with the sponsor, really inspires and directs athletic activity. Not the least enjoy- able of the club's responsibilities is the selecting of the nine good-to-look-at cheerleaders. The W Club's invitational dance was tops of the social events this year. All of us were there- the boys with Sir Lancelot's manners, and the girls with the new look fand charming at thatl. Decora- tions were elaborate: the gym was entirely covered With green and White paper, red and White streamers and clusters of multi-colored balloons hanging at various points. The W motif was carried out on the be-eautiful and dee-licious cakes that were served with punch. Cheer Leader!
