Presirlenl from Missouri Our Presidmf IlC7A1'?J0 N APRIL 12, 19J,5, after the sudden death of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, of Missouri, became President of the United States-the thirty-third President and the seventh Vice President ever to assume that high and responsible office. Son of a farmer, Mr. Truman was born in Lamar, Missouri, on May 8, 1884, but his home has been at Independence, Missouri, since his early childhood. A graduate of Independence High School, he held positions in banks as clerk and bookkeeper 3 but always felt the lure of life on the farm, Where he spent ten of his happiest years. In the Missouri National Guard, and as a captain of a Field Artillery battery overseas in World War I, Mr. Truman performed distinguished service to his country. In 1922 he was elected a judge of the Jackson County Court, and from 1926 to 1934 he was presiding judge, and made an excellent record of integrity and efficiency. Mr. Truman, elected United States Senator in 1934 and re-elected in 1940, rendered intelligent and loyal service in the Senate, and especially, as chairman of the Investi- gating Committee which bears his name, did he play a vital role in World War II in eliminating much of the War Waste. He Was elected Vice Presi- dent on the Roosevelt-Truman ticket in 1944. As President, he has assumed, courageously and patriotically, the most stupendous task that ever confronted a chief executive of this nation -the reconstruction of our own nation, rehabilitation of other nations, and Winning of World Peace, after the most devastating War in the history of mankind. President Truman's splendid business acumen, his good common sense, his unswerving devotion to duty will serve him Well now, as in the past. Along with the happy retrospect of this year of our high school life may we ever cherish a grateful appreciation of our glorious heritage -the history, institutions, and achievements of the great commonwealth which has fostered our Webb City High School. May we, her sons and daughters, consider her achievements, not as a story that has been told, but as a living, growing, unfolding panaroma of loyal citizenship, high endeavor, and magnificent development, in which we may assume a respon- sible and worthy part. ,.s4........... Sembr Pepys, Dzkzry September 5, 1946-This week, we, lately spending the days in idleness, did go back to the high school, Where We enrolled in many subjects, and did name Terry James as our Lord President. This in hopes of finishing our course in high school. November 24, 1946-Up betimes on Thanksgiving Day, and to the football field. Ted Parrish and other Senior knights did do bravely in trouncing our ancient enemy, Carthage, with a score of 28 to 7. It was a lovely sight when Her Highness, Frances Hopper, was crowned Queen of Football, and the Drum Corps stepped lively on the field. April 11, 1947-A fortnight ago many Seniors won first places at the Festival with sweet music and voices. Tonight our senior play, Rose in Bloom, did delight a great crowd. A week hence the beautiful consort of King Jack, Her Highness, Frances Newell, will be crowned Queen amidst great pomp and ceremony. It will be a proud day when we don our caps and gowns, some weeks later. May 9, 1947-To the Junior-Senior Banquet! All the young ladies did look lovely in their formal gowns g it was a pretty dinner, and all were very merry. On Lord's Day we will be edified at the Baccalaureate Services. On Thursday to the Class Day exer- cises, where our Honor students-Lady Barbara, Lady Frances, Lady Lucille, and Sir Charles-will make brave speeches. So to Commencement when eighty of us shall attain the prize of our labors. -MARY LEE STEWART l.. This is your unfavorite announcer bringing you the annual radio report of the unsurpassed accomplishments of that class, now Juniors, which took the school over in '42. As I enumerate the highlights of a very successful year, let's remember that for every Junior who has climbed to the top of the ladder of success, there are sev- eral faithful class mates at the bottom holding that ladder steady. Last September ninety-two Juniors stormed into the building. Realizing that the best way to kill time is to work it to death, they immediately elected Bill Lacey, president, and got busy on the following school activities: First came the urge for sports. Naturally, the determination of the eleventh grade boys to keep the opposing teams from making their goal explains why Webb City was able to rate third in Big-8 football. The fact that they were as obstinate as a tray of icc cubes is obviously the reason the school took first place for both A and B teams in basketball. Still keeping all their enthusiasm, they went all out for track, carrying away third place in the Big-8. Meanwhile, with June Herron as Major, the twenty-two Junior members of the band and orchestra are responsible for these groups being eligible to enter the State Music Contest. The fine blending of the eleventh grade girls' voices, en- abled the girls' glee club to enter the Springfield Music Contest. As usual, this class still has the most members in the drum corps. The Juniors were as nervous as a candlelight on the night of the Annual J unior class play. But with Manny Adamson and Gene Davis in the leads, it turned out very successful. KING JACK would not have fared so well without Richard Marvin, his cam- era, and his car. With five members in the National Honor Society, and eight in Quill and Scroll, we Juniors already have bright prospects for a happy ending. llul. wait until next year! If we Juniors can survive all the toasting, dining, and dimming ol' the Junior-Senior Banquet, Cand- the joyous three-month vacationl we will supply thc high school with the most outstanding Senior class it has ever known. Sembr fbggfz Student Cozmfzf Thirty-eight members of the Senior High Student Council figuratively and literally have gone places this year. In the fall We journeyed to the Springfield Student Coun- cil Convention, where we had delightful contacts, delicious spreads, and beneficial programs. Among our special projects have been the collecting of food and gifts at Christmas for distribution by the Salvation Army and the purchasing of new shrubbery for the campus. The Coronation of the Football Queen at the Thanksgiving Day game by our president, Johnny Inman, was an impressive and beautiful scene. One unique feature of this year's activities was a Courtesy Campaign ending with 11 Page 40 a special assembly, in which Rosemary Parrish and Frances Newell conducted a :Cour- tesy Quiz and gave bright pennies for correct answers. .Then came the Kiddie Dance, when we reverted to our childhood years with our dolls and other toys--a fitting social climax to a year of achievement under the supervision of our good friend and sponsor Mr. Chancellor. Four members and the sponsor at- tended the Student Council Convention at Springfield, and gained helpful suggestions. The council bought eight raincoats for School Boy Patrolg paid half of the cost of shrub- bery for the campusg conducted the Junior Red Cross Drive for the whole high school- every room being 100 per centg solicited and filled thirteen gift boxes for the Junior Red Cross. Our three Junior High parties sponsored by the council-well, television might have given you an idea of the fun and frolic and frills.
