We constitute a fraction of Amer- ica's most wonderful natural resources-her youth, and these are our memories. We have memories: -Of the hot-dogs, the hoarse throats, and thrilling touchdowns of the football season. Which class contributed the high score men on the basketball team? Why, the Junior Class, of course. The following boys were engaged in sports activities: Bob Benintendi, Albert Dearing, Gene Dooley, Bob Jackson, Hal Johnson, Paul Kay, Cleve Leonard, Don Miller, Sammie Peek, Bobby Roath, Gene Shirk, Jimmy Thomas, Dick Trimble, and Cleo Wood. -Of the tense, nervous seconds when the junior debaters, Louise Keller and Rosemary Chid- ester, sought to break the existing balance and bring the victory to our school. They sought and Foundg and Webb City captured not only the Big-Eight championship, but also first place at thxe Joplin Junior College Speech Tournament. Ted Cummins and De-lbert Jenkins were alternates. ---Of the songs, sad and gay, made favorites by the nonet. From our class came the follow- ing members of this outstanding group: Mary Jo Flournoy, Louise Keller, Betty Stewert, Mary Davis, and Janet James. As testament of the fact that the juniors are active in the glee club and mixed chorus, consider this: the Belle and Beau of the Bowery Ball, sponsored by the choral organ- izations, were Janet James and Jim Thomas, respectively. Countless Juniors ffstep-lively in the hand and drum corps, -Of the night of December the fifteenth, when our class play was presented. Those who participated in the three one-acts were Cleo Wood, Rosemary Chidester, Delbert Jenkins, Louise Kel- ler. Evelyn Turner, and Ted Hastings. Delbert Jenkins was elected president ofthe Thespian Society. --'And of the starry night of the Junior-Senior Banquet, our final achievement as the Junior Class. ' ' To our sponsors, Miss Aldridge, Mrs. Gibson, and Miss Voeltzg to the entire faculty and stu- dent body: and to our parents, whose combined aid made these achievements possible, we say, l'lmult you, for the memories. - ' ROSEMARY CHIDESTER Page 29 ,, 7 .1 F X Z zmz'0r.v--- Clays gf '4 6 V Back Row-Glen Bass, Wynona Bechhold, Bob Benintendi, Paul Berry, Jesse Black, Maxine Bogner, Elwanda Bolding, Marietta Bottom. The following members are Thespians: Frances Newell, Frances Hopper, Joanne Smith, Bar- bara Purkliiser, Mary Lee Stewart, and Jimmy Bruff. Most of these took part in the play commem- orating Lincoln's birthday, 'tThe Road to Gettysburg, and gave evidence of histrionic ability. We have three budding journalists who have proved, they are not so slow in getting news: Lois Watson, Beverley Smith, and Shirley Ferrell .... Ninth graders in the drum corps have displayed their abilities in playing a tattoo on a drum or a trumpet: Martha Johns Mabel Gresset Juanita Carr, Shirley Ballehgef, Irma- Gilliam, and Delores Moon .... In athletics we can boast of the feats hf Louie Hughes, perhaps the only freshman in recent years ever to reach the A basketball squad' of Johnny Myers our tennis star: of Bert Hancock, Maloy Ray, Bill Lacey, Louie Hughes, Bob Hickam-winning honors on the junior high basketball team: of B111 Lacey on the football team. Just watch our stride next year. Twelve of our number were in the Junior High Student Council. With Miss Stinnett as sponsor' Joe Sul- lens, president: Gene Davis, vice president, Shirley Ferrell, secretaryg Bob Hickam, captain-the council has 'fgone places. We wish to express our appreciation of the wise counsel and guidance of our faithful sponsors-Miss Stephens, Miss Largent, and Mrs. Martin. -MADELYN ADAMSON. Ezgfztly Grade Hffory L Vefe1'aI1S of 3 Whole year at W- C. H. S., the eighth grade, 107 strong, took up its new classes on Septem- bel' 4, 1944. ThI'011ghout the year our enrollment fluctuated until it finally .settled at 110. We have been a pretty active and influential STOUD, t00. We have our Sellghirds, our violin virtuosos, our policemen, our high steppers, and our noise makers-along with the usual allotment of student council members and gum chewers. Witness Dale Shellhorn, Bobby Jack, Tommy Tarrant, Clyde Sumpter, and Peggy Walters, lilting in the operetta-Bobby Jack sawing his fiddle to a good rating at the Springfield Music Festival-Danny McNeil, Ralph Morris, Leslie Allen, and Richard Bryson, sternly holding us to a walk at the street crossings-Peggy Walters, swinging high, wide, and graceful down the football field before the band-to say nothing of the bass drum booms of Shirley Roland that accompany Loomis Crandall's umpah-pas on the sousaphone, while Jackie Hulsey, Harold Conner, Dale Shellhorn, Harold Shoup, fill in on the brasses and Woodwinds fassisted in a minor way, of course, by a few students of other gradesj-Shirley Roland and Bobby Jack also helping swell the ranks of the orchestra. We have contributed our part also to the Junior High assembly programs, clubs, and athletic teams. Benny Leonard and Dale Shellhorn are our shining lights of the basketball court. All in all, we of the eighth grade have done our little best under the .sponsorship of our home room teach- ers-Miss Winter, Mrs. Crandall, Mrs. Crawford-to keep our school on the go in these- tragic times. We have tried to help our country, too, with war bonds and stamps, Christmas basket, scrap drives, and clothing drives. However, our year has not been all fun and frolic. We have paused to offer our .sympathy to two members of our class-Alec Eskina and Carol Knost-in the loss of their fathers, -CAROLYN JENKINS. Seventh Grade Hftory The history of the seventh grade class may be divided into three periods: Discovery, Exploration, and Settlement. We discovered the High School building itself in September, 1944. Once inside, we discovered that 138 of us were too many for any one home roomy so we were assigned different home rooms according to the alpha- betical standing of our cognomens. Those whose last names begin with A to H, inclusive, became Mrs. Ball S DU- pilsg the through O's were Mrs. :Coffee's to sponsor, while the P's to Z's were Miss Martin s to have and to hold. Later, for purposes of recitation and study, we di.scovered that we were to be divided after aI10iher iaSh10I1 UNO four sections: W, C, H, and S, which are the initials of Webb City High School. . By the end of this year the Webb City High School Band had grown to be the largest ever assembled in the history of Webb City, having a total membership of 92 members. The band this year has played at all football and basketball games and made one trip to Aurora to help the football boys play that town and gave a drill during the half rest-period. The band this year had drills ready and gave exhibitions at the halves of the football games. The annual home concert was given in March to a very appreciative audience, and here prep- aration was made for the contests and festivals to be attended in the near future at Joplin and Spring- fieldf At Springfield, where ratings were given, the band received I Cor Excellentj rating, with a very fine comment from the judge of the contest. The Clarinet quartet received III rating, the YVoodwincl quintet received I, and the Flute Octet I, as well as several solos which were played by members of the band. The band, for the first time, is going to present a series of summer concerts in the city park this coming summer and is looking forward to a very successful season.
