Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1984 volume:

REACH OUT AND TOUCH Communication is very significant in our life today. We chose the theme “Reach out and touch .... ” because of this. Look around you, communication is taking place. Although you might not think about it, the way we act, the signals we use (in sports), our faculty memos, and, yes, even the way we dress, are all signs of constant communication. The telephone is the example we’ve chosen to illustrate this theme. There is so much we do with the phone to make contact with those outside. Although you might resent it, the phone makes it possible for teachers to contact your parents, discuss your behavior with the principal, or even to change a schedule. The point it, communication is important and the Weaver community has caught that importance. So, “Reach out and touch” a page to see what lies beyond. 1984 PORTAL STAFF: Publication Design Workshop Class: Cheryl Alleyne, Claudia Brown. Kim Brown, Wayne Bell, Donella Hardy, Pat Hall, Kenneth James, Ray Jenkins, James Lewis, Sharese Maye, Juan Ortiz, Lawrence Palmer, Tony Ross, Jonathan Russell, Mark Silva. Evening Yearbook Staff: Loyda Camacha, Brennan Coles, Tanyah Comeaux, Emmanuel Gonzalez, Cheryl Maddox, Carol Shaw, Darcel Walker, Pamela Meyers. Carla Atkins, Karen Bowen WEAVER HIGH SCHOOL 415 GRANBY ST. HARTFORD CONN. —,— The hassle of getting a class ring is ridiculous. First, you order your ring. By putting all dimensions of rings on your finger, the salesperson determines your ring size. Some are so tight that they would cut off your circulation, while others are so big that they fall off. When the salesperson gives you the price, you fall off! Finally the salesperson gets your correct size and the design you want. You should always check up on your ring, or you may never get it. The salesperson either loses your name, or your ring, or, perhaps, both. Everyone else would be admiring their brand new ring and yours is nowhere to be found. When it is located, the price of gold has gone up, so you have to settle with paying extra on your ring. One of these days, you will take your ring off, perhaps to wash your hands. When you look for it and find it gone, you can bet that someone else is admiring your ring ... on their finger. Miss Whitiker, do you have my schedule? Everywhere you go you see numbers. That’s not unique, but the number 84 is. It’s not everyday you would see 84. Or would you? The numbe r of your house might be 84, the last two digits in your phone number could be 8 and 4. Your homework page could be 84, and even your locker combination could be 19-8-4. It could go on and on. Sorry, Charlie! All of your general level classes are filled. I have put you into Senior Math, Honors Physics, Critical Thinkin Honors Chemistry, and Spanish Three. The number 84 is very significant to the seniors this year. This is the year they become independent adults. The time has come for the seniors and graduating ju¬ niors to say “GOOD BYE!” and mean it. So, look out for the 84’s and when you do. remember, this is your year! REACHING OUT AND GETTING MORE , THIS IS THE CLASS OF ’84 Well, today’s our first get to¬ gether as a senior class. We talked about selling magazines, prizes and the prom. We also met our class advisors. When it was time to go outside, everyone went crazy. We knew that it was going to be a 1-o-n-g morning. When we got to the bleachers everyone was trying to be in the front row. As you see everyone didn’t make it. Senior Year, time to think about reaching out and leaving the security of home and school. For four years we have looked forward to that day when we would be able to hear the alarm and not have to get up and go to Weaver. Now that that day is near, there are some second thoughts. Our class work, our interaction with each other, and the support of family and friends have prepared us. Therefore it is with confidence that we REACH OGT AND .... REACH OUT 8 A HUG B. YELL AT . C FEED D. CALL E. SCARE F. KISS G. SNATCH SOMEONE AND Hey fellows, what are you Well, I have to go down to Loring to return my proofs so I’ll be in the Senior Sec tion of the yearbook. 10 TONYA MICHELLE ADGER “Ton” Pisces Michelle “Rosie” Salmon Secretary JERRY AGER “J.J.” CELORIS ALLEN “Susan C” Gemini Arlene Atkinson Claudette Williston Psychologist or Business Tonya Adger Jerry Ager Celoris Allen ARLENE IVETTE ARROYO “Little Bit” Gemini Beautician CARLA CHER1SE ATKINS “Cheeks” Taurus Kellena Nelson Industrial Engineer CHRISTOPHER BAISDEN “Quazar” Leo Timmy Baisden To be a rich man Arlene Arroyo Carla Atkins Christopher Baisden LISA ANN BANKS “Smurf” Cancer Tasha Frietas Biochemist SAMUEL LEE BANKS. Walter “Doc” Hurley Ever since he attended Weaver and received varsity letters in four sports, “Doc” Hurley’s name has been synonymous with Weaver athletics. When he was called back to Weaver in 1968 to provide a settling influence during those troubled times, he gave up his dream of coaching and became an administrator. He has been instrumental in furthering the education of many Weaver students by raising scholarship money with the Doc Hurley Classic and by his contacts with southern schools. His community involvement is well known. For this and more, we, the class of 1984, proudly say, “Thank you, Doc.” On his own, Joe Cirone decided to contact local business establishments with the hope of increasing their advertising support of the Weaver yearbook. He met with so much initial success that he kept going and eventually brought in over $2,500. For this much appreciated contribution to our class, we dedicate the book to you. Joseph Cirone HOMEROOM Waking up in the morning and coming to school must be the greatest thrill in your life. You simply drag yourself up flights of stairs to go to your homeroom. Once there, you sit down half asleep, to listen to the cheerful announcements of the day. A very boring voice says, “Today’s Weaver Bright Light ...” and talks on and on about people you don’t know. Then comes the moment of silent meditation, which isn’t silent at all. Unfinished homework is done, mothers are talked about, and papers are thrown. There aren’t any slavemasters to stop anyone in their pursuit of a better education. Of Course these opportunities are still being under utilized and many of our underprivileged youths don’t understand the importance of receiving a good educa¬ tion. Education means strengthening your mind so you are able to deal with the system. You can free your body, but without an education your mind will not be free. Surely when education in forfeited, the mind is left open to the slow process of mental destruction. Then, you have once again become a slave, but this time the chains are all on your mind! “The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Waste”, Even the Bible declares “You shall know the TRUTH and the TRUTH shall make you FREE! If you learn, chances are you’ll earn. But, If you don’t, you probably won’t. Don’t take a chance get a GOOD EDUCATION and REMEMBER no one can take it away from YOU! So, from Rev. and Mrs. George L. Exum Family to all of you, young beautiful and gifted youths . . . CON¬ GRATULATIONS and MAY YOUR FUTURE ACHIEVEMENTS BE GREAT!!! Congratulations Class Of 84 ROCCO L.
