The 71-72” edition of the Beaver football squad was indeed Super Bad.” The season got underway with an easy win over West Haven and continued to pick up momentum until the final game of the season. The Green Machine” fell short of the coveted and intangible State title by losing the last game of the season. This was one of the best years ever for the Weaver football team. The final standings had Weaver in a tie for first place in the CDC, boasting a 9-1 record. The soccer team continued in the win¬ ning pattern it formed last year. They posted a 12-1 record on the way to be¬ coming champions of the CDC. With the help of some outstanding individ¬ uals a team was molded which was ex¬ ceptional. The soccer team, too, was stopped short of a State title by being eliminated in the first round of com¬ petition. The basketball team had another great season this year. Although only two starters returned from last year’s squad, a balanced scoring attack and the depth with which the team displayed is attributed to its success. Weaver went into post season tournament sporting a 16-4 record. We reached the quarter¬ final round of competition before losing a heart breaker to Hartford. The track team started in the same spirit, which saw them emerge as second place finishers in the state last year. Their goal this year is to become the Number 1 state team. If the individual efforts displayed are any indication of the team’s overall ability then they just may achieve their goal. Their main purpose is to stamp out apathy among the student body and to generate school spirit. The Stu¬ dent Council, which is the major student or¬ ganization of the school, makes decisions concerning government and social activities that affect the entire student body. This year the student council established a scholarship in memory of Anitress Terry, one of Weav¬ er’s outstanding students, who had a fatal accident during the year. The Council also raised money for an annual Student Council scholarship, which will be awarded to a grad¬ uating senior who possesses outstanding scholarship, citizenship and leadership quali¬ ties. The Council organized a number of ex¬ change programs with area schools. The pur¬ pose of these programs was to further the understanding among students about the different schools. The Council also provides the opportunity for students to develop lead¬ ership qualities by giving valuable experi¬ ence through membership in the Student Council. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS The Senior Class this year has done many good things. For the first time in the history of the Hartford Public School system, we, at Weaver, held a Miss Weaver Pageant.” To raise funds for our treasury we planned several ben¬ efit basketball games, bake sales, car washes, fashion shows and a dance. With this money we organized a Year¬ book and Cap and Gown Day, a Senior Reception, and a Rag Day. These events were sure evidence of the cooperation between a large majority of our class members. Special thanks is extended from the Senior Class officers to all to all those who have contributed their time and help in making our class functions a success. ' ROW 1): Vincent Hylton, Sharon E. ALFRED BINGHAM, Editor-in-Chief PORTAL As Faculty Advisor and Faculty Business Man¬ ager to the PORTAL, Miss Fugere and Mr. Kar- rer would like to extend their most appreciative thanks to the members of the Senior Class who have given their time, energy and money in order to make this year’s Yearbook a success. Miss Fugere, this is a pre-wedding gift from the Class of 1972, and especially from the chief executives of the POR¬ TAL, for your most devoted hours, to us, during your young and free” life. We hope you will look back on these days with a smile and feel very proud having worked with us in our teenage days—days of struggle for identity. Best Wishes and a World of Happiness MISS CHRISTINE FUGERE Faculty Advisor MR. JOHN KARRER (Before) Faculty Business Manager Very special thanks to you, Mr. Karrer, from the entire Class of 1972, for the time you have spent taking care of the business portion of our Year¬ book. Sometimes there was turmoil and confusion, but we, the PORTAL staff, hope that when you look at this Yearbook it will cause you to reflect, not on the bad times, but upon the good times you had, a friend you made, a teacher who helped, and, maybe, even something you learned here at Weaver. To those Seniors who were members of the executive board and the entire Senior Class, I extend my heartiest thanks and best wishes. After being Advisor to your class the past three years, I witness your graduation with mixed emotions. Friendships be¬ tween you and myself make it a sad time. How else can a person feel when separation comes for him and those with whom he has shared many happy moments? I will never forget the bake sales, basketball games, fashion shows, proms and outings. These mem¬ ories will always give an air of happiness to my life. Yet I am most happy and proud of your culminating accomplishment at Weaver—graduation. It is my hope that your years at Weaver—the hard work and the fun—will serve as a stepping stone to greater things for each and every one of you. Thanks for the memories.
