Illllfll 1 Tl CKET5 THE GREATEST ' HoW ON efVSTtt .TARRlMCJr CVA SOF 59 SHAPIRO FOREWORD Four years ago on a bright September morning, we entered the portals of Weaver High School a bit perplexed, mystified, and scared! Most of us were prepared to endure the challenge facing us the next four years. One thing was certain — we would all grow, learn, and mature together in the same place, under the Big Top” called Weaver. With a circus theme, the ’59 PORTAL has tried to bring out the center rings” of life at Weaver and all the different side shows” and added attractions” the school has to offer to help mold our character as young adults. We have had excellent train- Filled with Pleasant Memories ' $1 ■riBa Diversified Activities .. ers” and diversified activities to encourage harmonious living and aid us in reaching our individual goals in life. The show must go on,” and so must we — the Class of ’59. But we now have something to remember, to cherish, — our high school days. They are filled with pleasant memories, great times, warm ex¬ periences and lasting friendships. We of the Board sincerely hope that this PORT¬ AL can preserve these memories and hold close to the hearts of fellow Weaverites the wonderful, unforgettable years under the Weaver Big Top.” M. L. P. iH Tv ' . 1 ® ® wM DEDICATION MISS ANITA K. ROCHE The memory of three devoted faculty mem¬ bers will always remain embedded in the minds of the Class of ’59. These three have guided, encouraged, and instructed the members of our class, giving each of themselves whole-heartedly with unceasing efforts at all times. An honorary fellow classmate! Our new Dean of Girls entered Weaver with us when we were freshmen. We grew and matured under her able guidance and saw her incessant desire to better the welfare of every Weaverite. She was always there to lend a firm and guiding hand. Her encouragement enabled us to make that extra effort. She was our untiring advisor for the Girls’ League and the Student Council. Those of us who worked with her, whether for a dance, on a committee, or as an advisor, can appreciate more fully what she has to offer to Weaver and its students. This Class will always be grateful for having had the opportunity to know and work with such a wonderful person. Clear your desks” — This familiar quote can belong to none other than the excellent history teacher with a wonderful sense of humor and a contagious smile. She has been a teacher, a counselor, and a friend to a countless number of Weaver students. The part that she has un¬ selfishly played in Weaverville — as supervisor for the Jr. Red Cross, as an assistant adviser to the Girls’ League, and as chaperone to the cheer¬ leaders — has been of extreme importance and of immeasurable value. If ever we were faced with a problem, Dear Abbey” was always there to sit down and try to solve it and talk things over. The reception line at our many school dances always found a place for this bright smil¬ ing, sparkling woman. She is truly a friend to one and all.” Still waters run deep, and in the case of this man they also run straight and true. None of 6 us will ever forget the devotion, perseverance, and intelligence which he displayed, not only as a teacher but also as the advisor of the Drama¬ tic Club. Those of us who were fortunate enough to be in his classes can testify to the originality and clarity that he brought to his sub¬ jects. We also learned the value of hard work, sincerity, and optimism. During those long hours of rehearsal, this modest director exempli¬ fied all the good qualities a person could have. He will always remain as a symbol of integrity and good faith which we sincerely hope to emu¬ late. His character will be continued in the lives of all those he has influenced. MISS MARIE V. DeBARTOLO MR. ALBERT V. DeBONIS Because of their deep confidence in students and their untiring willingness to help them suc¬ ceed — because of their desire to help make us better adults — and because of the marvelous memories that they leave with us, we the Class of 1959 are extremely proud and fortunate to dedicate this PORTAL to Miss Anita K. Roche, Dean of Girls, Miss Marie V. DeBartolo, history and guidance teacher, and Mr. Albert V. De- Bonis of the English department. MR. WILLIAM F. AITKEN Our years under the Big Top” have been wonder¬ ful and enjoyable because of our outstanding barker,” Mr. William F. Aitken. He has served all of us, trainers and trainees, untiringly and unselfishly. His understanding, patience, friendliness, and sincerity have placed him within the chrystal ball for life. He has extended a warm, helping hand under many tents” and his heartfelt guidance has been an inspira¬ tion to many. His presence at countless ringsides” has exemplified his sincere devotion to Weaver, its faculty, and the student body. In the midst of numerous tasks and responsibilities, Mr. Aitken has served as a guiding light for the Class of 1959. This is only a small token of our warm affection for our devoted principal, Mr. William F. Aitken. Greeting from Mr. Aitken It seems but yesterday that the class of 1959 came to Weaver High School — and now you are being graduated. We who remain behind look with nostalgia upon your going, realizing that yours was a fine class which made contributions of worth and signifi¬ cance to your fellows, your school, and your community. Wherever you take your place in tomorrow’s world, I hope that each of you will contribute of your great potential to a better society in which the dignity of man and the rights of people will be respected as of paramount importance. As we bid you farewell as undergraduates, we welcome you as alumni. We will follow your progress with interest and wish for each of you happiness and success and a place of honor in the better society to which you are going to make a worthy contribution. Vale and Godspeed to the class of 1959. WILLIAM F. AITKEN STUDENT COUNCIL Seated, left to right: Singer, Shea, Pas- sett. Standing: Mr. Aitken, Miss Roche, Reardon, Rinaldi. 8 MR. EZRA MELROSE When the members of the class of 1959 look back upon their years at Weaver, they will recall with fond memory the name of Mr. Ezra Melrose, our vice¬ principal. His frank, sincere manner and his amiable personality have encouraged all of us to talk over our problems with him. His wide knowledge of colleges and vocations has been a factor in solving problems and in helping many seniors decide the course of their future lives. Mr. Melrose will be remembered in many situa¬ tions: in the receiving line at school dances, at the basketball and football games, and in his office coun¬ seling a perplexed student, writing college recommen¬ dations, or advising the members of the Boys’ Club. We have admired Mr. Melrose for his tireless efforts in promoting the good of Weaver High School, and we assure him that he will have a permanent place in our hearts. BOYS’ CLUB OFFICERS Seated, left to right: Lumbru- no, Romano, Dean, Dineen. Standing: Mr. Melrose, Whin- nem, Laysears, Fisher, Wise. 9 L ? Allegro (Weaver Style) Show me the paths of glory tread By committees, teams, and casts; Lead me through these hallowed halls, So my memories will always last. Away, away all other schools, We banish you from our sight. Leave this land of happy cheer And dwell in eternal night. Enter my desolate mind and soul, Magic muse whose domain is Weaver. Fill me with joy of life renewed And make me an immortal Beaver. Memories of friends and joy, Of work and rewards for care, Memories of dances and parties galore, And of teachers wondrous and fair. If thee, oh muse, can bring these joys, With thee I intend to dwell, But even if in this task you fail, Weaver will be remembered well. FOOTBALL The Beavers,” under the supervision of Coach Joe Beidler, displayed great potential, but could not amass a winning punch. They were a far better club than their flimsy” 2-6 record points out. Countless injuries and bad breaks plagued the team throughout the season. Led by senior stalwarts, Mike Stelman (captain) and Pete Landerman (All C.D.C.quarterback), Weaver nearly overhauled such up-state powerhouses as New Britain and Hartford. Their best performance came with a 32-0 white-washing of New London. The future years seem very bright as a good many letterman will still be in school. Weaver, as usual, displayed excellent sportsmanship on and off the playing field. SEASON SUMMARY Weaver .... 8 Hall . ... 2 Weaver .... 8 E. Back row: Gladstone, Willis, Hirsch. BASKETBALL Under the leadership of Coach Frank Scelza, the Beaver hoopsters, resplendent in new green, white, and gold uniforms, compiled an enviable 16-2 record, 3rd best in the state, while capturing both the City and Capitol District Championships. The classy cagers provided spectators with innumerable thrills in every game, as they were known to be a great second-half team. The Weaver Five racked up sixteen victories, including twelve straight, with their only two defeats dealt by Norwich. The speedy quintet found a formidable foe in a scrappy Bristol team, but they managed to pull that one out of the fire with only a minute remain¬ ing. The Scelzamen downed an unbeaten Bulkeley crew, with co-captain Ricky Turner pouring in 29 points. In their second encounter, the Beavers managed to overcome an even more determined Bulkeley team by one point in the remaining seconds of the game. In another thriller, Ernie Perry, with only three seconds left, saved the Fighting Five from defeat at the hands of Hartford. In one of their finest performances of the year, the Weav- erman, behind an upset-minded Hall quintet with only twenty-two seconds left, poured in an amazing array of shots to leave the spectators dazed and Hall defeated. The Beavers were off to New Haven for the Class A” Tournaments. A fiery Bridge¬ port Central team took a 25-22 half-time lead. The Green fought to overcome the lead, but were still trailing 42-39 at the third quarter. However, true to their reputation, Scelza’s boys bounced back to earn a victory and a spot in the quarterfinals. Off to a poor start, Weaver fought desperately to chop down a fifteen point lead established by a machinelike Hillhouse team. To everyone’s surprise, the quintet succeeded in trying the score 50-50 at the end of the third quarter. However, Weaver’s cheers were in vain! The cagers just didn’t have it that night, as they were downed 70-61. Gone were the hopes for another state championship and a trip to Boston! Leading the team in the scoring department were sharp-shooting Ricki Turner and slick ballhandling Ernie Perry. Versatile Bcrnie Grant, classy Charlie Jones, and powerful Oszzo Laysears grabbed many a memorable rebound. Tommy Stewart, Bob Dean, and Andy Morris helped round out Weaver’s fine performing 1958-59 basketball team. 62 Low ceiling! iVI. ' VK Here’s .hoping! Grab it! CROSS-COUNTRY Although the Weaver Harriers were victorious in just two out of seven meets of the 1958 cross-country season, they still gave a fair account of themselves in most of the contests. Winning against East Hartford and Loomis, the Harriers showed tremendous potentialities. By far the season’s best runners were co-captains Jerry Fierstein and Colum¬ bus Woodward. Since this year’s team was comprised mostly of juniors and underclass¬ men, next year’s prospects look much brighter. HILIGHTS FRESHMAN YEAR As we entered the awe-inspiring portals of Weaver High School, our hearts beat faster, and we anticipated some great years under the Big Top”! Since we were lowly freshmen, it took us quite a while to adjust to the new surroundings. From haughty upper classmen we heard, Want to buy an elevator pass?”, The gym is on the third floor,” and Freshmen at the end of the lunch line!” Activities soon got underway, and Gene Corr was elected freshman representative to the Girls’ League. Two of our famous class members began their separate careers: Naomi Kurnitsky joined The Lookout” as a cub reporter, and Paul Reardon was elected to the Student Council. Ringleaders for sophomore activities were chosen. Joan Grimaldi was elected sopho¬ more member to the Girls’ League, and Paul Reardon was re-elected to the Student Council. Since only a few of us were old enough to work, caddying, swimming, and loafing filled up our first summer vacation. SOPHOMORE YEAR We returned from our vacation to find the biology room modernized, a new green curtain in the auditorium, and book shelves (at last) in the cafeteria. The student body learned a new school song . . . Green and white are our colors, Weaver High is our name.” This was really our year for sports! Weaver beat Hartford 13-6 in the Thanksgiving Day game. The basketball team captured the state championship over Hillhouse. Many of us lucky Beavers traveled to Boston to cheer our team on to victory . . . and a victory it was ... New England Champs ! ! ! Ricki Turner led the J.V. team in scoring honors that year. Could this be a preview of things to come? Varieties of 1957,” the theme of Weaver Night was great . . . Bluma Merkin’s Eloise” was unforgettable. The Dramatic Club play, Onions in the Stew,” featured Claudia Demers, Marshall Deutsch, Judy Dun, Judy Fisher, Dorothy Jablonski, Louisa Rose, and Jerry Strouch. Ronny Tishler and Bob Dean became members of the Boys’ Club executive board in elections for our junior year. Paul Reardon was elected vice-president of the Student Council (this has already become a habit!) and Patty Lewis, Rosalie Shapiro, and Danne Mahon became new Girls’ League officers. In June, we left the Big Tent,” and eagerly looked forward to A” assemblies and other upperclass activities. JUNIOR YEAR Most of us, like Barry Rosenberg, who traveled with the Merchant Marine to Europe, returned from a happy vacation only to learn that the passing grade had been raised 10 points! Pat Lewis gave the first performance of the year as chairman of the Get Ac¬ quainted” party. Fame strikes again! Weaver Night ’58 was Out of This World.” Our own Diane Freeman, Linda Gra¬ ham, Dolores Jackson, Danne Mahon, Reyna Marcus, Bluma Merkin, Steve Molinsky, Emily Schuman, Phil Sosland, Mike Stelman, and Judy Varley helped make it a success! Linda Graham reigned as queen of our fabulous junior prom, Three Coins in the Fountain.” Rosalie Shapiro chairmanned this gala affiair. The Junior Tea, under the direction of Danne Mahon was perfect! It was a pleasure to see the girls all spruced up in dresses and high heels rather than the everyday skirts and sneakers! Maureen Shea was in charge of the Pops Concert, which, was held on the front lawn of the school. The dance band played selections from musicals and popular songs. Judy Dun was the recipient of the Wise Scholarship this year. Miss Drake accom¬ panied Judy on this interesting trip to Europe. Looking back on our junior year we will always remember . .. J. Alfred Prufrock . .. how our turkey wasn’t too tasty! . . . exercises in gym . . . Bemis . . . terrible Terryville” . . . football parties . . . Fantasia Royale” . . . four lunches . . The Lookout was turned over to Naomi Kurnitsky, Paul Reardon was appointed Student Council prexy, and Mike Stelman was chosen to head the Letter Club. We threw The Book at Margie Passett and Barry Rosenberg. Patty Lewis, newly elected president of the Girls’ League, attended Girls’ State with Joanne Montgomery. Paul Agdens, Bob Dean, Bernie Grant, Pete Landerman, and Paul Reardon spent a week of their summer at Boys’ State. Cheerleaders were chosen for next year. Dottie Jablonski was elected head cheer lady. Our last summer vacation as Weaverites arrived, and we anxiously awaited the best year yet! SENIOR YEAR Well, kids, we did it!! Our last performance under the Big Top” of Weaver High School finally arrived. Now we were the BIG seniors who proudly displayed our shiny rings and exchanged class pictures. The Boys’ Club started activities with a bang as they succeeded in collecting $150 in their pencil drive. At our annual Girls’ League assembly, President Patty and Boys’ Club President Bob Dean presented Mr. Aitken his birthday” gift, a beautiful Hitchcock chair. Sixteen more Weaverites were inducted into the National Honor Society . . . this brought our total membership of brains” to twenty-nine. Shortly after, Errol Berman was elected president. Seniors were well represented on the Jr. City Council by Gene Corr, Dotty Jablon¬ ski, Brian Steinberg, and Jerry Strouch. Steve Saulten was general chairman of the Teens Against Polio program, in which many busy Beavers participated. More honor was brought to Weaver when Louisa Rose was named winner of our first Poetry Contest. Judy Dun was named a Merit Scholarship finalist. Congratulations to DAR winner Pat Lewis, Bausch and Lomb winner Norman Fienman, American Legion Oratorical Contest winner Naomi Kurnitsky, and Homemaker of Tomorrow Shirley Kaufman (bet she won’t have any trouble finding a man!) Larry Rudin chairmanned an enjoyable and unique Rally for Conquest” which preceded our well fought defeat on Turkey Day! We did, however, have a fairly success¬ ful football season under Captain Mike Stelman. Many Seniors attended our last Goodwill Formal under the chairmanship of Doro¬ thy Jablonski. Naomi Kurnitsky, representing The Lookout, was the lucky girl to reign as queen of Prelude to Winter.” Our hearts were heavy, as we saw our beloved Jasper” leave the portals of Weaver after twenty-eight years of devoted service. It’s the beginning of the end! We elected class officers, headed by Carl Fisher, who will preside over senior functions. Rosalie Shapiro was in charge of the Girls’ League Spring Fashion Show,” which was a real hit! Senior models were Gene Corr, Linda Graham, Barbara Land, Danne Mahon, and Ruthie Rosenthal. Wasn’t the Student-Faculty Frolic fabulous? Although the Weaver varsity only tied the Fearless Faculty Five-by-Fives,” we still enjoyed all the surprises of the night! Agnes Marley and her girls from the Leader Corps put on a magnificent show at half time. The models from the Letter Club were simply charming! Rhoda Singer organized the Student Council’s Mardi Gras dance. Pat Boone,” our guest star, sang a few numbers during the intermission. The Weaver Circus produced a fine basketball team our last year with a 16-2 record. In spite of losing to Hillhouse in the quarter-finals of the state tournament, we did capture the city and the district titles. Under Captains Ozzie Laysears and Ricki Turner, Coach Scelza’s boys kept the fans on the edge of their seats all through the season! Guy Morrison won the Hartford Courant’s Columbus III contest. He spent exciting days in Italy at Eastertime. Patricia Lewds was awarded the Silverman Book Prize at a special assembly in March. During our spring vacation, Mr. Thomas and Miss Belisle accompanied a group of students to Washington, D. C. Twenty-two seniors went on this exciting and eventful four- day trip. The month of May soon arrived, and with it came many activities to keep the ‘ ' terrific circus” in action. Weaver Night, this year, was just fantabulous”!! By now, every¬ one had received notices from college, and we started to make our plans for September. The Senior Banquet on which Janyce Rogers and her committees worked so hard was wonderful! After we recovered from the chungs” of Class Night, our last social event at Weav¬ er was upon us. The Senior Reception, Sayonara,” chairmanned by Marshall Deutsch, was superb! The climax to our four long-to-be-remembered years under the Weaver Big Top” arrived on June 17. As we sat, clad in our caps and gowns, on the Bushnell Stage, we heard Maureen Shea and Judy Dun deliver the Salutatory and the Valedictory. All the outstanding incidents of our four fabulous years flashed before us — Heartaches, Laughter, Fun, and Tears! As the curtain came down on our graduation and senior year, each graduate wished that his next four years would be as profitable and wonder¬ ful as those he had spent at Weaver High School!
