Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1956 volume:

WtAVER HIGH SCHOOL MARTCORO CONN FORE Ladies and Gentlemen, the newes: and most modern rocketship of the year 1956, The T. S. Weaver,” is ready to take off on its first flight into the un¬ explored heights of the future. Just a few more short minutes, after three eventful years of waiting and prepara¬ tion! Those three years won’t be for¬ gotten, however, if the PORTAL Board has succeeded in its work. Through pic¬ tures, write-ups, an d the very latest style artwork, we hope you’ll always remember your classmates and teachers and the events that you’ve shared with them: the assemblies, that were always inspiring and enlightening; the dances, that transformed the gym into a scene of captivating, regal splendor; the warm feeling after cheering a Weaver football, basketball, or baseball team to victory; and then, the weeks, the months, the marking periods of classes that now seem to have flown by fairly The warm feeling after cheering . .. WORD quickly. Of course, at the time our studies might have seemed tiresome and the results not too spectacular, but the realization of having completed a long and sometimes arduous task is al¬ ways rewarding. In appreciation of these past high school years the PORTAL Board has attempted to s how how they will influence the modern man as he moves ahead into the future. His knowledge will enable the modern man to live in comfort and happiness. As a scientist he will invent wonderful new drugs; as an engineer he will provide streamlined cars and appliances; as a lawyer or judge he will help men re¬ tain the strength of morals taught by the priest or the rabbi; as a parent he will endow his children with the will to improve upon these, his own humble beginnings. But now, let’s go, Class of 1956 — the future awaits us! — H. L. S. — Captivating regal splendor!” Tiresome . . . and not too spectacular!” DEDICATION As we, the graduating cl ass of 1956, end our high school careers and prepare to embark up¬ on life’s journey into the future, we dedicate this, our classbook, to Weaver High School. It is certain that, in no small way, this school has helped to mold us into not only what we are today, but also into what we shall succeed in becoming even fifty years from now. The teach¬ ers of Weaver High School have sought to imbue in us, their students, the desire to ac¬ complish worthy tasks, to strive towards our goals with complete and unrelenting stead¬ fastness. Should not the value of our high school education also be measured in the knowl¬ edge gained of our fellowmen? Here Weaver High School truly excels, for inside its portals a spirit of friendliness and cooperation is most obvious — a spirit which is so much a part of this graduating class today. That we may pay tribute to Weaver High for having opened so many gateways to the future, we, the Class of 1956, hereby dedicate this year’s Portal to our Alma Mater! MR. WILLIAM F. AITKEN As the graduating class of 1956 for the last time passes through the portals of Weaver High, we pause to bid a fond farewell to our beloved principal and friend, Mr. William F. Aitken. A heartfelt thank you” hardly seems enough for all the loyal devotion Mr. Aitken has shown to our school and the students. Al¬ ways sympathetic and understanding, he has guided us with a strong, but gentle hand, im¬ parting his wisdom to all who ask, but always speaking with us, not at us. Yes, our principal has always been father, counselor, and friend, willing to help when help was needed, en¬ courage when hope was gone, and give sound advice for which we will always be grateful. As the portals of Weaver close behind this gradu¬ ating class, another crop” of grateful students joins the ranks of those who will always re¬ member our principal, Mr. William F. Aitken. STUDENT COUNCIL EXECUTIVE BOARD Seated, left to right: Tine, D’Esopo, Barton, Mascaro. Standing: Reardon, Miss Roche, Bar- low, Mr. Aitken. Not in picture: Andreoli, Pres. 8 MR. EZRA MELROSE Thoughts of Weaver will bring different memories to each of us. Without exception, however, we will all recall Mr. Ezra Melrose, our vice-principal. His combination of sterling qualities has endeared him to all of us. He is an able scholar, administrator, teacher, counsel¬ lor, but most of all, he is our friend. Through¬ out our years at Weaver, Mr. Melrose exhibited a keen interest in us and our problems. He was always ready to come to our aid. For the con¬ stant vigil he maintained at all school events we will always be grateful. Truly, when we look back on our years at Weaver, Mr. Melrose will stand out in our minds. BOYS’ CLUB EXECUTIVE BOARD Seated, left to right: Egan, Barlow, Fanelli, Barton. Standing: Mr. Thomas, Clarke, Kramer, Countryman, Murray, Mr. Melrose. MISS ANITA K. ROCHE To Miss Anita K. Roche, our Dean of Girls, we bid a fond farewell. Although she has been at Weaver for only one year, Miss Roche has worked her way into the hearts of many. A friendly smile, untiring helpful¬ ness, and a warm sincerity are her trade¬ marks. Her beneficial guidance and en¬ couraging faith have given hope and hap¬ piness to many Weaverites. We the class of ’56 have been indeed fortunate in having such an unselfish person to aid us in pre¬ paring for the future. And so to Miss Roche, we extend a heartfelt thank you.” GIRLS’ LEAGUE EXECUTIVE BOARD Seated, left to right: Tine, Gitlen, Clark, Madden. Its per¬ fect symmetrical structure, with its glistening light walls, offset by azure skies and surrounded by a sea of emerald, paint a refreshing picture of the whole¬ some atmosphere in which we have gained the knowl¬ edge and guidance needed to build richer and fuller lives. With pride and the deepest admiration we will always regard Weaver as the sanctuary of our youth and the inspiration for our future. Almost everyone thought Weaver would reach New Haven, but few dared to hope they would get to the finals and become State Champions for the second time in three years. Following a somewhat mediocre performance against Stam¬ ford, the tall Green and White outfit was paired with tourney favorite, undefeated New Haven Hillhouse; but Weaver was not to be denied. Sparked by John Sullivan’s 17 points and John Egan’s 15, Weaver kept even with the highly touted New Haveners in the first half and steadily moved away from them in the second half to win 59-51. This game, without a doubt, was the highlight of the year. The Pros” had been beaten. In its semi-final game with Fairfield Prep the Green toyed with the pride of Fairfield County” to trounce them soundly, 75-58. In this contest John Egan set a new all-time tournament scoring record for a single game performance with 29 points. John Harrell hooped 14 and Ted McBride 12 to aid in the Weaver win. The finals saw the Beavers go in as a slight underdog against taller Manchester. The experts who had picked Man¬ chester to win looked good as Weaver left the court at halftime, trailing by a 34-29 count. At the outset of the second half, Weaver outscored the Indians 11-0 to race into a commanding 51-40 lead at the quarter. In the final period the lead was upped to 59-44 before Manchester rallied to cut it to 65-52 at the game’s end. John Egan tallied 18 points to set another new tournament record for the most points scored in the final three games, 62. He also received two more honors when he was awarded the Thomas M. Monahan trophy as the tourney’s most valuable player. In addition he was unani¬ mously named to the all-tournament team. Teammate Ted McBride was honored by be¬ ing selected for the second team, while John Sullivan and John Harrell received honor¬ able mention. At Boston, in the opening round of the New England tournament, Weaver ran into the Ides of March and hot-shooting Morse High of Bath, Maine and lost 78-57. Thus came the end of a season which few had thought possible. In regular play, the highlight of the season was the 58-52 victory scored over Bulkeley, as Weaver upset the highly touted Bulldogs with a sterling team effort. The only real disappointments of the season were the second Bulkeley game which saw Weaver blow a big lead, and the two Norwich games, which the Green and White lost by six points each. In other games. Weaver split with Hartford High and swept past Windham, Hall, East Hartford, New Britain, New London, and Bristol. 64 FOOTBALL TEAM First row, left to right: McGuire Carabillo, Rondinone, Berson, Fanelli, Matarazzo, Barlow, Fradianni, Frankl, Gold¬ stein, Himelstein, Thompson. Second row: Bonito, DiBella, Lerman, Wallace, Hampton, Kramer, Druckman, Watson, Clarke, Pinto, Lee. Third row: Woolwich, Whinnem, Tinsley, Millstein, Lewis, Shriber, Rosenberg, Coach Beidler. Fourth row: Flanagan, Holliday, Weisman, Rohrlick, Di- Cicco, Huey. FOOTBALL Led by Captain Ed Barlow, the Weaver football team played some great football this fall, even though its record might not indicate it! The Big Green” was plagued by mishaps throughout the season, although they showed improvement with each pass¬ ing game. Three of the Beavers’ losses were real heartbreakers. In the opening game of the year East Hartford rallied to edge the Green and White, 12-6, in the last minute of the game. Some six weeks later, New London, a prohibitive three or four touchdown favorite, pulled the same stunt and escaped with a 6-0 verdict. On the kickoff which followed New London’s touchdown, halfback Andy Holliday scampered some 95 yards for what should have been the tying points, but the officials ruled that he had stepped out of bounds en route and the play was called back. The traditional games against Bulkeley and Hartford High saw Weaver go down to defeat by identical scores of 27-6. In both games the opposing lines were heavier, and they spelled the difference as the Beavers were held scoreless until late in the game. This was Coach Joseph Beidler’s first year at the helm, having come to Weaver from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, last August. Although the team won but one of its eight games, Coach Beidler always managed to get the team up” for the following contests. At the end of the season guard Joe Fradianni was honored by the Hartford Courant as he was named to both the offensive and defensive All-District Elevens. 66 idn ’t taste low closing good th Roiidinone SEASON SUMMARY Weaver. . 6 East Hartford. .12 Weaver. .12 New Britain. .32 Weaver. .19 Hall . . 6 Weaver. .20 Norwich . .21 Weaver. . 6 Bulkeley . .27 Weaver . 0 New London. . 6 Weaver . 0 Wilbur Cross. .12 Weaver. . 6 Hartford Public. .27 ho ays sn Pporti nP W aoPP et at the line! CROSS-COUNTRY With all but one of its members back from last year’s fine squad, this year’s Weaver cross-country team compiled an excellent 5-1 record in dual meet com¬ petition, the only loss coming at the hands of East Hartford in the final meet of the year by a 23-32 margin. The three co-captains, Bob Murray, Ed Clark, and Carl Littman, were easily the most outstanding runners on the team as they con¬ sistently raced across the finish line in 1-2-3 order. Murray led the Beaver runners home in all but one of the meets. In the meets outside of dual competition the harriers also fared well. At Storrs, Conn., the Wilsonmen placed sixth in the Connecticut Invitational Meet and eighth in the State Meet. Bob Murray finished third in each race for Weaver. In still another contest over the UConn 2.7 mile course, Ed Clark placed 46th out of a field of more than 150 in the New England Meet. Finally, in the greater Hartford competition, the Green and White wound up second to East Hartford in the five school race. Once again the fuaire looks bright for the cross-country team. Although Coach Wilson’s harrier squad will be minus Bob Murray and Ed Clark, the fine array of veterans, headed by co-captains-elect Dave Murray and Bob Grey, prom¬ ises another banner year! 68 SEASON SUMMARY (low score wins) Weaver. .26 Bristol . .29 Weaver .20 Woodrow Wilson ...35 Weaver. .21 Middletown . ...34 Weaver. .24 Hartford Public. ...31 Weaver. .21 Bulkeley . ...34 Weaver. .32 East Hartford. ...23 Greater Hartford Meet second place Connecticut Invitational Meet sixth place State Championships eighth place SPRING SPORTS BASEBALL TEAM First row, left to right: Schiavone, Slauenwhite, DePlace, Blake, Nielsen, Phillips, Reilly, Coleman. F 1 .. |Ii GIRLS ' SPORTS SOPHOMORE YEAR We were introduced to sports at Weaver on the football field where we enjoyed playing volleyball, speedball, archery, and golf. With the arrival of Jack Frost, we took to the gym to participate in volley¬ ball, which soon became very popular, basketball, ping pong, and tumbling. After school sports were also in full swing as we teamed up to play volley¬ ball and basketball. Sounds of swing your partner” filled the gym as we square-danced to the hum of a fiddle. Songs, cheers, and wonderful pyramids filled the spectacular Sports Night as the Blue Team tri¬ umphed over the Green. As warmer weather ap¬ proached, we returned to the field for more sports and tennis at Keney Park. JUNIOR YEAR We looked forward to the outdoor fall sports as we returned to Weaver. Familar with all the games, more girls participated in the vigorus playing of volleyball and speedball, while others chose archery. When the cold weather arrived, sounds of 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4, and grunts and groans accompanied body slimming exercises. Badminton, basketball, tumbling, and bowling followed. The Blue Team was again the victor over the Green Team in the Sports Night ac¬ tivities. The sunshine once more beckoned us out¬ doors for tennis, volleyball, softball, and archery. SENIOR YEAR As seniors, we were old hands at all of our sports. We enjoyed marching, volleyball, speedball, and arch¬ ery even more! Something new was added this year when we returned indoors. We all learned the basic skills of golf under the direction of Keney Park professional Andy Beziah. Will we ever forget — to the left, to the right, looking down on the floor, over your left shoulder — ?” Allemand left” and dosy do your partner” accompanied the strands of square dance music. Successful games of after school basketball and volleyball filled many a pleasant after¬ noon for us. Badminton, ping pong, bowling, tumbl¬ ing, golf, and a new addition, shuffleboard, were the activities offered to the girls. As the weather gets warmer, we’ll return to tennis, volleyball, softball, golf, and archery. As we go to press, Sports Night lies ahead of us. 1 CLUBS ART-CRAFTS CLUB Kneeling, left to right: Price, McFadgen, Pugliese, Rago, Salter.
