T T 1 Here comes W ' ' WEAVER HIGH SCHOOL TARTFORD, CONNECTICUT Dedication We of the Class of 1955 dedicate this, our classbook, to our parents. We hope that this will be a token of our love and appreciation to them for all they have done for us. This, our classbook, is their classbook, too. Our friends are their friends; our interests, their interests. Through these past years, our parents, with patience, understanding, and love, have strived to give us the best possible, many times denying themselves some small pleasure, that we might have that which we would like. All too often the boys and girls of our age group are embarrassed to show the natural affection which we have for our parents. It is with this in mind that we, the Class of 1955, dedicate this book to our parents. We know that we can never repay their countless sacrifices, but we can dedicate our lives to trying to live up to the standards which they have set for us. God bless them! Foreword The high school career of the Class of ’55 is, inconceivable as it may be, almost at a close. The wonderful times that we’ve all had together can never be revived, but they can be recalled. It is for this purpose that we of the Portal Board have worked. We hope that in the years to come this book and the contents herein will recall three of the happiest years of our lives, our years at W.H.S. These years could be compared to the cruise of a showboat, the faculty exacting the roles of crew members, producers, and directors, we, the pupils, playing the part of actors. We have given daily performances, some good, some bad, for three successive seasons, while traveling down the river of Time. Our trip has been one filled with adven- The big brass band . . Mirror, mirror, on the wall” Their Majesties. ture and many happy experiences. On the other hand, we have encountered many storms, trials, and tribulations. However, the intelligent and consid¬ erate cooperation of all concerned has seen us safely through. We have reached the last port of call for the showboat, and the curtain is being rung down on our last performance. Using this analogy as a theme, we of the Portal Board proudly present The Por¬ tal, Weaver High Showboat, 1955. May we always remember the good-will and comradeship of our class. We are very grateful to Mr. Larrabee, our faculty advisor, for his invaluable part in the making of this book. It takes a steady man at the helm to carry the ship through rough waters. — M.R.H. Wow! Bird’s- e Je view of Wonderland’- Mr. William F. Aitken To Mr. William F. Aitken, our beloved prin¬ cipal, the class of 1955 bids a sorrowful and reluctant adieu. During our years at Weaver he has increased our wealth of knowledge and character with his sincerity, good-will, and friendly guidance. His great pride in Weaver and its students has instilled in our hearts an unforgettable fondness for this man who has proven to be more than just a principal. Mr. Aitken has always been an active and interested participant in all Weaver activities, and has easily become one of us Weaverites.” We know that, although we are leaving Weaver behind us, the inspiration which we have received from this capable and skilled leader will continue to be a living testimony of his profound influence upon us. Mr. Ezra Melrose The light was born where storms enshroud.” Truly Mr. Ezra Melrose, our vice-principal, has been the light which has guided many dis¬ tressed seniors through their journey on the Weaver Showboat. Always on hand to give sound advice, Mr. Melrose has displayed a sincere interest in all Weaver students. He has been a welcome figure at school events, in the receiving lines and at the ticket window, alike. His amiable nature, pleasant disposition, and understanding, along with his progressive ideas, have made Mr. Melrose a combination of friend and teacher that is hard to beat.” i Miss Katherine R. Goodwin We would not dream of leaving Weaver without offering a sincere Thank you” to Miss Katherine Goodwin, our Dean of Girls. It is her sympathetic and understanding nature that has helped us over the bumps, and has paved the way to success and happiness for a number of Weaver girls. Her friendly smile, always a welcome sight, enhanced her efficient manner. In working with her, we have con¬ stantly found Miss Goodwin eager to aid us in our projects, and we have found her advice extremely beneficial. We extend to Miss Goodwin a sincere expression of our gratitude. L’ENVOIE To Weaver: Whose portals we entered as bewildered children; Within whose portals we have grown physically, mentally, and morally; Whose portals we now leave to face the future, young men and women, unafraid, confident in the knowledge and friendship we have gained here. —M.R.H. Murray (Co-Capt.), Clark, Alexander. 2nd row: Dixon, Rosen, Hester, Miller, Silverman, D. Murray. Back row: Freiberger, Mr. Aitken, Mr. Wilson. CROSS-COUNTRY The 1954 Weaver Cross-Country team had what can be termed a very successful season under Coach Ted Wilson. The Harriers split even in 4 dual meets, beating Bristol and East Hartford, but dropping close decisions to Woodrow Wilson and Middletown. Outstanding for the team were Co-Captains Dan Hayes and Bob Murray, Carl Littmon, Ron Beiderman, and Fred Clark. Bob Murray took five first places in eight meets, winning the Greater Hartford Invitation and setting a new Goodwin Park record while winning the Bulkeley, HPHS, Weaver Triangular Meet. Murray hit the tape in 12 minutes, 44 seconds. Co-Captain Dan Hayes, although hampered by injuries, was a true leader and contributed many valuable points. The future looks bright for Coach Wilson’s combine as Hayes is the only letterman graduating and the team is liberally sprinkled with promising sophomores and juniors. Back row: Sokoloff (Mgr.), Woolwich, Lapp, Berson, Cramer (Mgr.) FOOTBALL At the season’s outset the 1954 Weaver football team was slated for mediocrity. But inspired by the knowledge that it was Coach Ed Sandall’s last year at Weaver, the team was determined to make it a good one. Although small physically, the boys were gifted with a real fighting spirit, and ended the season with a fine 6-2 record. The line, which had been the big questionmark in pre-season notices, blossomed under the tutelage of Coach Alan Mooney into a hard-blocking unit. The team’s balance between offense and defense was apparent in that the Beavers scored at least once in every game, while holding four of their opponents scoreless. The season’s high point was the New Britain game, in which the Big Green came from behind twice to win 27-14. Unfortunately, the team saved most of its mistakes for Municipal Stadium and bowed to HPHS and Bulkeley for the only losses of the season. Dick Reilly, Bob Mikulske, Wendell Coleman, and Jim Dakin were further honored as All-District choices, while Coleman was chosen on the Second String All-state team. Consequently, the 1954 football season was a great success, as the team did much more than was expected of it and gave the Weaver rooters much to cheer about. 58 SUMMARY i Opponents 27 East Hartford 27 New Britain 6 New London Weaver Weaver Weaver Weaver Weaver Weaver Weaver Weaver 6 Norwich 12 Bulkeley 20 Wilbur Cross 13 HPHS Totals Y ' A, ■ •■■■? Standing: Jennings, Brown, Daniels, McBride, Sullivan, Lee, Coach Horvath. BASKETBALL The 1954-55 basketball season, though not able to be termed a success, can neitnci be thought of as a failure. Hampered by the early season loss of Capt. Ted Jefferson, Coach Charlie Horvath, ably assisted by J. V. Coach A1 Mooney, was forced to bring up untested sophomores. These sophs were tried in different combinations with returning stalwarts Beans” Brown, Jerry Roisman, Dick Reilly, and Bob Pollack. Although experiencing a losing season, the team exhibited a fighting determination to get back on the right side of the ledger. This spirit was largely responsible for the Beavers’ stunning upset win in overtime over Bristol, 50-48. This game was easily the highlight of the season and gave Weaver fans something really good to remember about the 1954-55 Weaver basketball team. 60 Cowie ball °n do w Rebound, Beans”! got bask, et A Z e s ” 61 Spring BASEBALL 1st row, left to right: Nielsen, Murray, Piccolo, Parasiliti (Co- Capt.), Sklar, Egan, Coleman. 2nd row: Reilly, Mikulske, Can- tafi, Phillips, DePlace. 3rd row: Mr. Sandall, Mangini, Mr. Aitken, Cramer, Mucci, Mr. Horvath. The figures don’t always tell the whole story! This team represented their school to the best of their ability and never let the school down. Bob Nielsen, captain of the 1955 team, plans to lead a successful team on the diamond this year. TRACK 1st row, left to right: McGuire, Robbins, Borden, Douglas, De Gruttola, J. Madden, Alexander (Capt.) 2nd row: Kramer, Barlow, Rud- in, T. Madden, O’Neill, Mr. Mooney. 3rd row: Mr. Aitken, Kagan, Cohen, Clark, Beiderman, Mr. Wilson. J c ; -a I ■ J i— m ■ 3 VI r ? ■ 71 TRACK TEAM The 1954 Track season proved a mediocre season. The team had individual stars, in two events. Dan De Gruttola, co-captain of the 1955 team, is an excellent runner, while Dave Robbins, the other co-captain of the 1955 team, and Charles McGuire are fine pole-vaulters. 62 TENNIS TEAM Kneeling, left to right: Epstein, Stein, Frauenglass, Himelstein. Standing: Mr. Steeves, Cohen, Hurwitz (Capt.), Kravitz, Mr. Aitken. TENNIS TEAM This team, in contrast to some of Weaver’s others, boasts a winning record. Captain Myron Hurwitz and Arnold Cohen reached the semi-finals in the doubles match of the State Tournament. GOLF TEAM Kneeling: Cushing, Kalin, Wal¬ ter, Baskin. Standing: Mr. Aitken, Kliman, Sherman, Swilling, Gibbs, Mr. Andrews. GOLF TEAM There are many fine prospects left from the 1954 Golf Team. These up Weaverites will try to improve upon their record of last year. and coming 63 Girls’ It was during the first visit to gym class that the sophomores had their first contact with the girls’ athletic program. They soon found themselves par¬ ticipating in archery, volleyball, tumbling, and bad¬ minton. The Girls’ Leader Corps welcomed the girls at a playday. After-school sports were soon begun. In the spring of 1953 Sport Night was introduced to them. Many girls took an active part as the Green Team emerged victorious for the first time in several years. As Juniors, some of the girls traded in their blue gym suits and red socks for the white leaders’ uni¬ forms. These girls were installed at the first assembly program given by the Girls’ Leader Corps. The girls again found themselves enjoying ping pong and speedball. In May the Blue regained its mastery of J Sports the Green in an exciting Sport Night battle. Gerry St. Laurent as President, Tina Grasso, Pat Baker, and Janette Johnstone as the other new officers, were in¬ stalled at the Leader Corps Tea. Soon after the beginning of the new year the cheerleaders were chosen, and they elected Gloria Morris and Pat LaPenta as captain and manager. At an after-school play-day the new students were wel¬ comed to gym activities. The leaders also gave a party for the Squad Captains. The new leaders were in¬ stalled at an assembly where four foreign students from Springfield College demonstrated their country’s dances. Once again the girls tried exercises and folk dancing under the supervision of a student teacher. Miss Peaslee. As Sport Night rolled around again, Pat LaPenta captained the Blue and Anna Moshovos led the Green. The spring tea brought to a close the girls’ sports program for the year at Weaver.
