WEAVER GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT (Not to be Taken From This Room Without Special Permission) PRESENTS Oo WHS-TV PORTAL ' 5U Weaver hibh school Hartford, Conn FOREWORD Major productions in the studio Undying spirit for the Green and White Gaiety and splendor of proms” As we turn from channel to channel on our TV screen, we fondly recall the joys and the sorrows, the work and the play of our memorable years at Weaver. Yes, W. H. S.-TV presents You Were There”, and brings to mind the highlights of our school careers. We remember the utterly confused feeling of being thirds” but gratefully recall the careful direction of our faculty, under whose guidance we ar¬ rived at the gateway to maturity. The spotlight shines upon the serious moments, the exciting sports thrills, the variety of clubs and activities, and those wonderful proms and dances. We also tune in on pleas for a lasting peace, brotherhood among men, and a desire for higher education. It is the sincere desire of the Boards that THE PORTAL of 1954 will always bring to mind fond memories of three wonderful years. We can always tune in on W. H. S.-TV, for here is one television screen that will never fade out! — A. D. F. Enjoyable coffee hour receptions’’ DEDICATION Miss Katherine R. Goodwin For many years Weaver students have lauded the devoted service of this kind woman. The gentle manner with which she has faithfully given her time and effort to help students and their projects be successful has won her the respect and admiration of both the students and the faculty. Many important school functions and affairs have been greatly aided by her support, encouragement, and wise advice. With patience and understanding she has guided the Student Council along the path to success in achieving many of the goals for which it has strived. Her moral and spiritual integrity has played a leading part in the direction of the Girls’ League and in her work as Dean. For your sincere dedication to Weaver and the magnificent accomplishments you have made here, the class of 1954 salutes you, Miss Katherine R. Goodwin. May God bless you as you continue to help Weaver flourish and prosper. 6 DEDICATION Mr. Nicholas C. Coracci As we, the class of 1954, leave these portals, we take with us the memories of this beloved teacher. His jovial spirit and precious wit have created a happy atmosphere in his classes and a strong bond of friendship with many students. Weaver recognizes him as its good-natured treasurer” who, as faculty adviser to the Business Board of the Lookout, has handled efficiently the funds of the paper to keep it in the chips.” His smiling face was always present at the ticket window to greet Weaver rooters. He has spent countless hours of work in managing the affairs of the schedule room. Girls desiring to enter the secretarial field appreciate the excellent training he has given them in typing and in shorthand. For the praiseworthy way in which you have gone beyond the call of duty to serve Weaver by offering a helping hand, the class of 1934 extends an expres¬ sion of gratitude to you, Mr. Nicholas C. Coracci. 7 Mr. William F. Aitken As the principal of Weaver High School, Mr. Aitken represents unity. Perhaps, the most well liked of our faculty, he always wears a smile. As we look back, his warmth, friendliness, understanding, and sympathy will never be forgotten. Every student at Weaver has a friend in Mr. Aitken. His appearance at all of our functions and his sound advice have proved inspiring to us. He is ever ready to aid Weaver and the student body in forward growth. Consequently, he has done much to make Weaver the fine school it is today. He has always encouraged us to go ahead and to seek the ideals we know and have learned to be right during our school years. As we thumb back through the pages of our high school memories, Mr. Aitken will always stand out, as a guiding example light to Weaver’s graduating class of 1954. TO MEMBERS OF THE SENIOR CLASS: As your class has journeyed through Weaver, we might think of your stay as a great show of many acts with varying talents and contributions from the members of your group. Your faculty, as directors, has worked hard, long and conscientiously for each of you and in your best interests in order that your contribution to the production might be your best. As actors in the play, each of you has shown growth and development and leaves the stage with maturity, social and intellectual growth far beyond what you had when your show opened three years ago. As you graduate, your performance is not over, for you advance from the Weaver undergraduate stage to the larger stage of life as members of the Weaver alumni group. Your directors wish you all success and have high hopes for a fine performance from each of you. QUO FATA VOCANT? —WILLIAM F. AITKEN Principal STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS Seated, left to right: Chaffee, Alexander, Sheehan, Brink. Standing: Miss Goodwin, Barton, Morris, Fanelli. We—the class of 1954—bid farewell to one of the most prominent members of Weaver’s faculty, Mr. Ezra Melrose. This popular advisor, with his ever ready smile, has become «a close friend to many. As vice-principal and counselor, Mr. Melrose has shown undying interest in the student body by his work with the Boys’ Club, his presence at all the Weaver games and social activities, and by his tireless efforts in helping many seniors to decide upon their futures. As we leave Mr. Melrose and go our way in life, we shall remember his last message to us: The paths you will travel and the vocations you will choose may vary, but if each of you will make the quest of high ideals the central reason of your life, the world will be closer to attaining true peace and good will.” V -7 BUSINESS BOARD Seated, left to right: Kaufman, Baggish, Manekofsky, Rubenstein, Lambert, DeGregorio, Clark, Teresino. The class of 1954 would like to take this opportunity to wish the best of health and happiness to each member of Weaver’s fine faculty. The teachers have served as our guiding light” in helping to prepare us for the future by giving a wonderful foundation for further education to those who will go on to college, and specialized training for those who will go to work. Our TV screen was darkened by the loss of Mr. M. Nelson Owen whose soft-spoken ways will always remain a part of Weaver. We all deeply felt the retirement of Mr. Harold B. Clapp and Miss Jennette Bodurtha who, we hope, will continue to enjoy life as much as we, the class of ’54, enjoyed them at Weaver. OFFICE STAFF Marjorie H. Sexton Agnes E. Frank Perry Frank Keitt Ted Jefferson Jack Hart field BASKETBALL The 1953-54 basketball season saw, among other things, the return of the City Championship to the Green and White, and the end of the Trinity Field House jinx. At the beginning of the season, the Beaver-Cats,” as they will be known in history, originated a startling full court press which bewildered all opponents except Bristol, which caught the Green and White on an off-night and squeeked by with a 61-57 victory to hand the Beavers their lone defeat of the regular season. At the outset of the 1954 C.I.A.C. Class A Basketball Tournament, it was obvious that the Beavers were one of the top contenders for the state crown, but few people, except Weaver rooters, considered them a serious threat to highly respected Hillhouse. The Big Green drew Crosby, number 9 in a field of 18, and went right to work to sharpen up their bullet-like attack. With one of their best games of the season, the team swamped Crosby, 83-60. Then, even New Haven sportswriters kept a wary eye on this up and coming team. The game against Hall High (62-41), while not so impressive as the Crosby opener, still kept Weaver’s hopes for the state championship alive, and for the first time in many years ' the Northenders were represented in the semi-finals. Filled with revenge for their only loss of the season, the Fabulous Five” stormed into the New Haven Arena to meet Bristol. As the game progressed, it was all but certain that the Maroon and White was no match for Weaver. Thrilled with the thought of reaching the New England Tourney, Weaver fans kept chanting We’re going to Boston! ”, and with the final gun, their dreams came true! No matter how successful the team had been so far, the true test was against Hillhouse, a perennial favorite. Like a team of professionals the Beaver Court-Cats” combined their talents to rout the astonished Academics 58-42 and to make Connecticut history. The Weaver team of Captain Jack Hartfield, Frank Perry, Frank Keitt, Ted Jefferson, and Ron Harris had become the 1954 Connecticut State Champions! Despite the efforts made by certain Connecticut officials, Weaver was paired with Hillhouse for the first round of the New England Class A Tournament. Just as the Beavers sought revenge from Bristol, the only team to beat them, so the Acs attempted to avenge their only loss and succeeded before a crowded Boston Garden. In a rough one, the Big Green, possibly tensed up, was unable to stop Coach Bender’s combination. Northend fans witnessed their first major basketball disappointment of the season! FOOTBALL TEAM Front Row, left to right: Douglas, Sklar, Wentland, Cornelius, Woolwich, Mascaro (co-capt.), Piccolo (co-capt.), Lambert, Potenza, Lang, Pelligrinelli, J. Madden. Second Row: Szarek, T. FOOTBALL Despite an overall 3-5 record, the 1953 Weaver football season was highlighted by many a thrill which would please the most critical rooter. At the opening of the season, the Big Green, sparked by the lightning speed of Ron Piccolo and the stiff line backing of Carm Mascaro, copped two easy wins over East Hartford and Hall High. But on the following Saturday, the Beavers came up against their first powerful opponents in the New London Whalers. As the spectators filed out of Batterson Field, the scoreboard showed that the Green and White had met its first defeat. The Weaver line, like melted butter, fell prey to the strong defensive tactics of New Britain, Manchester, Bulkeley, and finally H. P. H. S. in the annual Turkey Day classic. How¬ ever, a battling Beaver backfield of Piccolo, Cornelius, Paternostro, and Borden proved successful in crushing a weak Norwich eleven. In the final analysis, an optimistic atti¬ tude can be taken from the fact that where points were lacking, good sportsmanship and undying spirit prevailed. 72 . . . three cheers for the Weaver Band . . . . . . planning new strategy ' . . . . After-school sports started and the Spring of 1952 found many playing in the softball tournament. Sport Night was introduced to them and many took an active part. Blue Team members were vic¬ torious over the Green that year. A few found themselves members of the Girls’ Leader Corps by the end of the year (scared stiff to lead the seniors!!). As Juniors many more became G.L.C. members (oh, those red socks!), and they helped organize the autumn activities of horseshoes and volleyball. The after-school ping-pong tournament was a successful one. Sport Night rolled around again as exciting as ever with the Green Team winning over the Blue after five years of defeat! As soon as this excitement died down, the Girls’ Leader Corps elected Patricia Bonadies as their president and Janet Epstein, Cynthia Mirsky, and Rose Marie Co meau to other club offices. The girls were installed at the successful annual spring tea in the clubroom. 1953-1954 was a year of many memorable events. The Leaders welcomed the sophomores and freshmen in the gym at an after-school playday. Exercises under the direction of Miss Barbara Wulbrede, practice teacher at Springfield College, were one of the highlights in the gym classes, (oh, those aches!) The Girls’ Leader Corps planned its first assembly program to install new members. Dr. Ruth Evans of Spring- field College and Mr. Joseph Gargan, director of physical education in Hartford, were present. Cynthia Mirsky and Barbara DeGregorio were elected captain and manager of the cheerleaders. Another colorful Sport Night found Arline Grimaldi leading the Blue Team and Edwina Vecchiolla, captain of the Green. The successful annual outing of the Girls’ Leader Corps brought down the curtain on our W.H.S.— TV Sports program. SMOKING NO MOKING w M S ' ctjm ■ THE PORTAL scrapbook which will always recall to every Beaver the days at dear old Weaver High” is incomplete without this intermission on our TV channels to highlight the events of the past three years. Let’s turn the dial way back when we first entered as wee-bitty” sophomores. Weaver was like a labyrinth, filled with great big juniors and seniors to whom we looked up. But as the years rolled by, we grew, too, and we came to know every nook and corner in this three-floored edifice which became to most of us a second home.” The first place that will immediately come to the mind of each of us is the auditorium. The curtain is rising—it’s the Dancing Dolls . . . the Dancing Beauties next! . . . Madame Ali Baba and her crystal ball! Oh, yes . . . will we ever forget Weaver Nite, the gay musicale of the year? Weaver certainly had great talent . . . didn’t she? Mr. DeVaux, the director, Miss Best on the make-up, Miss Goodwin, and Mr. Bronstein all deserve a round of applause for giving so much to make Weaver Nite the Toast of the Town.” If Weaver Nite wasn’t in the auditorium, it was a rally. There are the Weaver cheerleaders dressed in the immortal green and white. Bingo, bingo . . . bingo, bingo, bingo that’s our lingo . . . fight-fight! You bet . . . those were the days! Weaver’s spirit beat them all! Although we never brought home the Turkey during our stay,” each Beaver gained the essentials for success . . . good sportsmanship and fair play. In our junior year the gym was the scene of our Junior Prom, with Ronnie and Arline as King and Queen. A fabulous dance which took us right into Gay Paree . . . remember?
