WCAV4R |fO V 5C410OL l-MRfPfiRD. ccim { This year marks the twenty-fifth anni¬ versary of Weaver High School, and this year, as in previous years, the Portal has gone to press again. Because of our school’s anniversary, we of the Portal have tried to edit a book worthy of our Silver Jubilee. It has been the staff’s goal throughout the compilation of the book to commemorate this occasion and to produce an interesting and factual report of our class activities throughout our three years of senior high school. Though at times, things got involved, and we almost wrote up a sopho¬ more or two in the rush, the Year Book has gone well. I can truly say that the staff has tried to keep this Portal the book of the students and to produce what you, the students, would like. However, it would have been an even tougher haul but for the able guidance of Mr. Larrabee and Mr. Cunningham. Theirs and the staff’s was the greatest load, and to them, if any is forthcoming, should go the praise. Those of us on the Board, who are bowing out, leave Weaver with a feeling of regret, for school has been a wonderful experience. We hope, further, that this year’s Portal adequately and last¬ ingly marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of Weaver High School. — K. W. WEAVER 16, HARTFORD 12! I 1 ’ $ •% 7B 1 - MR. WILLIAM F. AITKEN DEDICATION During his two years as vice-principal, Mr. Aitken has always represented the ideals of fair play, honesty, good sportsmanship, and clean fun. His deep interest in every phase of school life, whether it be a football game or a history assignment, has won him the admiration and respect of faculty and students alike. Together with his exceptionally tolerant attitude and progressive ideas, Mr. Aitken combines a warm smile, an easy conversational ability, and a vibrant personality which has inspired and will continue to inspire many Weaver students. Not often does one find a person who can handle administrative affairs efficiently and justly while at the same time acting as a friendly advisor. In Mr. Aitken, we have found such a person. He has never been too busy to spare a moment for a personal problem; neither has he been too involved to see that the numerous functions of the school ran smoothly at all times. In recognition of the man who has assumed the duties of principal in this memorable year, the 25th anniversary of the opening of Weaver High School, we, of the anniversary class, dedicate the Portal of 1949 to Mr. William F. Aitken. _ ■ 7 ' “ V 3ltt MR. FRANK H. BURKE Although Mr. Frank H. Burke, principal of Weaver from 1935 to 1948, did not live to see the school pass its 25 th year, he will live on in the hearts and minds of many a former student. Mr. Burke will be remembered by the graduates of ’24 as their popular, red-haired Latin teacher and by the graduates of ’49 as the sincere, hard-working principal who did so much for Weaver High School. All who knew him will cherish the memory of those sparkling, spontaneous speeches, the witty remarks that were both humorous and meaningful. His friendly smile, his earnest desire to aid, his loyalty and unfailing devotion to his school, his church, and his community made him an outstanding figure, not only in Weaver High School but also in Connecticut. With his untimely passing, education lost one of its most ardent boosters and advocates, and Weaver High lost a capable leader. 8 DEAN OF GIRLS Over the past three years our class has become better acquainted all the time with Miss Katherine Goodwin, our very popular Dean of Girls. During the short span of our school days, we learned to regard her as our indispensable friend and sincere advisor. Because of the heart-warming manner in which she has made us feel so much a part of the Weaver family, Miss Good¬ win has easily won the confidence, admiration, and trust of everyone who has come in contact with her. The long hours she has devoted to her” girls have given many of us an incentive, an inspiration to strive for the higher things in life. Under the guiding hand of our Dean, the Girls’ League has done much to promote friendship and service in our school. Those who have worked intimately with her have come to anticipate a radiant smile and a sparkling wit. And those who did not become well acquainted with her have missed one of the swellest” faculty members at Weaver High School. A sincere expression of gratitude goes to Miss Goodwin, our esteemed Dean. MISS KATHERINE R. GOODWIN GIRLS’ LEAGUE EXECUTIVE BOARD Seated, left to right: Naboicheck, Lewis, Ascher, Bender. The high point of this football year saw one of Weaver’s scrappiest elevens climax its season by whip¬ ping a highly favored Hartford High team in one of the year’s biggest scholastic upsets. Weaver inaugu¬ rated the season by beating Bulkeley 12-0 at Municipal Stadium. From that time up to the last day of the season, the team was riddled by injuries to key men. Starting positions in the backfield for most of the season belonged to Quarterback Ed DeMino, Halfbacks Hum DelMastro and Subby Colavecchio, and Fullback Car¬ mine Mangini. In the line it was Dom Ferraina and Dick Linden at ends, Don Pivnick, Jim Carabillo, Nick Gandza, and Don Gosse alternating at tackle, Danny Blume, Bill Dubinsky, Bob Callahan, and Sammy Siegal at guards, with Lenny Berman, Joe Interlandi, and John Gleason alternating at center. Bill Stajos, Walt Borden, and Red Slobin also saw lots of action in the backfield. Largely because of in¬ juries, Weaver’s record up to the time of the Hartford game was not too impressive, with two wins, four losses, and one tie. On the strength of this record, Weaver was rated the underdog against a once-beaten Hartford team. Spirit ran high a few days before the game, and from the opening kickoff on Thanksgiving Day it was evident that the boys were up” for this one. The crowd saw a fighting Green team play its best game of the season as Weaver beat Hartford in a 16-12 thriller. Once again Weaver figured promi¬ nently in the all-district selections, placing three men on the first team and three on the second. DelMastro, Linden, and Ferraina gained first team recognition, while Colavecchio, Pivnick, and Mangini placed on the second team. CROSS-COUNTRY This year’s cross-country team, coached for the first time by Mr. Howard MacMullen, wound up an en¬ couraging season with an even 3 and 3 record and a ti e for fourth place in the State Meet. Under the tute¬ lage of Mr. Mac” the team, composed mostly of Juniors and Sophomores, showed steady improvement as the season progressed. Most consistent placers throughout the season for Weaver were Captain Kid¬ der, Mastrandrea, Beckham, Berkowitz, and Labb. Mastrandrea took the Bulkeley and Middletown meets while Kidder won the East Hartford meet, and placed fifteenth in a field of approximately 200 in the State Meet. Next year will see the return of many promising underclassmen. Among these are Alan Schwartz, John Brown, Bob Scharaf, John Gallina, Seth English, Ed Magner, and the new captain, Joel Weinberg. BASKETBALL Weaver’s hot and cold quintet, although failing to gain the tournaments, broke the long losing streak started in ’46-’47 and showed some bright spots which indicate improv¬ ing basketball at Weaver. The Green got off to a slow start but warmed up about halfway through the season. A drubbing of Kingswood at Kingswood provided the season’s first win, and it was quickly followed up by the team’s best performance of the year in the form of a 52-48 win over a classy Windham High quintet. The starting line-up for most of the year consisted of Dick Linden and Jack Kelliher at forward, Dom Ferraina or John Cuyler at center, and Capt. Umberto DelMastro and Bob Kidder at guards. Other seniors who saw action during the year were Val Leniart, Arnold Price, Ed DeMino and Sid Alexander. An abundance of good junior and sophomore material showed up this year. Besides starters like sophomore Cuyler and juniors Kelliher and Ferraina, reserves Red Slobin, Millard Opesso, and Delbert Stone, all juniors, provide a bright outlook for next year. Credit also goes to Mr. McGill for coaching one of the best jayvee teams we saw in action this year. j Risas i m GIRLS ATHLETICS The Girls’ Physical Education Department, headed by Miss Eleanor Whitney, functions with great suc¬ cess. The fall and spring sports consist of track, volley¬ ball, baseball, archery, roller skating, speedball, and golf. During the winter months, when classes are held indoors, basketball is the most enthusiastically sup¬ ported sport with some eager participants in volleyball, shuffleboard, ping-pong, self-testing, tumbling, exer¬ cises, bowling, and dancing. After-school sports were always looked forward to. The Leaders’ Corps directed these sports and kept a record of all girls attending. At the end of the year points for participation were counted, and girls having 100 received their numerals, while those with 350 points received letters. Each spring brings the climax of the girls’ sports program, Sports Night, in which all the girls of Weaver take part. Two teams, the Blue and the Green, demonstrate and compete in the various sports they have participated in during the year. THE BOYS’ LEADERS CORPS Completing its fourth successful year, the Boys’ Leaders Corps has become an outstanding school organization. Under the capable direction of Mr. Howard MacMullen, better known as Mr. Mac,” the Corps has taken an active part in school affairs. It has the distintion of being the only one of its kind in the city. Its members are selected from the student body on the basis of athletic and gymnastic ability, qualities of leadership and initiative, and citizenship and scholastic standing. Twice a week the boys work out in the gym learning advanced gymnastics and other sports fu nda¬ mentals which they in turn teach to the gym classes during the regular school day. Many of the boys aid in the school activities such as hat-checking at formals and other events, and acting as cashiers in the cafeteria. They also give their own annual demonstration in the spring season to illustrate the progress made during the school year. OFFICERS FOR THE YEAR President .. Nicholas Cecere Vice President . Carl Schiessl Secretary ...Norman Schmidt Treasurer .. Manuel Stein INTRAMURAL SPORTS Weaver High School should be proud of the fact that it has the most extensive intramural sports activi¬ ties of the Hartford schools. Under the direction of Mr. Howard MacMullen, the participating boys take part in football, golf, basketball, volleyball, baseball, and handball competition. The teams are selected carefully in order to make this competition keen. There are senior, junior, and sophomore leagues of which the winning teams take part in a play-off to decide the school intramural championship in each of the sports. Another interesting feature of this program is that the winning teams participate in a city series with the best intramural teams of the other Hartford high schools. The interesting and most important feature of these activities is that anyone can participate. There are no restrictions on the boys whatsoever, except that they must not be a member of the varsity sport at the same time. This gives the boys who are not able to make the varsity teams, who are busy with outside work, or who are ineligible for varsity sports, a chance to take part in and enjoy an interesting program. The enthusiasm of the boys illustrates the success of the activities. At the end of each year intramural letters are awarded to the members of the winning teams and special awards made to outstanding boys. See him just entering his sophomore year. The first things that hit our eyes as sophomores were the swinging doors. Then we were initiated into the various unrestricted clubs—the 8:31 club, the Demerit Club, the Seventh-Period Club. We learned that girls would be girls at the Senior-Sophomore party, and that boys would be boys at the Thanksgiving Day football game—which (wonder of wonders!) we lost! There came then the Weaver (un) Fair with Katy Economou calling us back to Sorrento, and the Goodwill calling us back to the Weaver gym. One day, Mr. Burke turned up in powder and paint—the ladies came to see his portrait unveiled in the lobby. At Sport Night the girls who were a little too green became quite blue. In May the Choir sang Be Not Afraid and scared the audience out of their seats. Miss Hanks and Mr. French even retired after that!” AND ONCE THEY WERE LITTLE SOPHOMORES ' ’49-ers AT WORK IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS ' ws mm MISS HOOD AND FRIENDS” AT TEA. A ripple shuddered oyer the water and brought his junior year back to the ’49-er. That fall we got new teachers and the building warmed up. Sure, those teachers were hot stuff, but not that good—the pipes were fixed! We had an unequaled record in football that year—Unvictorious! Brock scared us with his Weaver Nightmare and soothed our jangled nerves with his Where Are You Now? (in the audience, Mr. B. Where did you think?) A vote was taken for the New Look—all in favor said Eye,” all opposed, Knee!” A1 Nahum spoke a few words and brought glory to Weaver by winning the city-wide Oratorical Contest. While being jabbed with mile-long needles to see if we had blood— er—T.B. (Too Bad if you don’t), Dave Elovitz got scratched with a phonograph needle and hasn’t stopped talking since. THE SMOOTHIES—AND THEY HAVE BRAINS TOO! Then we saw the Pie-Eyed” Piper and the lame boy who limped on the wrong foot. Hummy DelMastro and Elaine Angelo had very Prom-ising futures in May and reigned over the ball with true grace. This year the Boys’ Leader Corps(e) became jealous of the Girls’ Sport Night and put on their own exhibition. Gold Star parents attended the unveiling of a plaque in honor of Weaver’s war dead. Ed DMino was on the ball as captain right off the bat, and we knew Art Fleischer would keep a sharp Lookout on ’49’s doings. Again the water shifts. Well, well! The senior year is coming into view. We started this year with sadness in our hearts at the loss of our dear Mr. Burke, and honored him at a special Memorial Assembly. Mr. Aitkin instituted three-minute bells: You could cook your eggs between class and make sure they’d come out the way you like them! And study halls for tardiness!! Bert Brockman became undisputed leader of the 8:31 Club and made 240 his office. PRINCIPALS OF THE PIED PIPER 86 This was the year of DelMastro—we won the Tur¬ key Day football game! We rally did! Wha hoppen? Visitors streamed to Hartford: Harry Truman, Benny Goodman, Rufus, and our own Nebby played with the master of the licorice stick. C.H.L.S. gave suckers for books—lollypops, that is. Norma Lewis became first lady” of the Girls’ League and Jim Carabillo prexy of the newly organized Boys’ Club. Isolde Droemer was sent to the Daughters of the American Revolution, but we got her back in time for her to win art awards for us. We in-Sisk on winning the Oratorical prize, and so we did again. BENNY AND NEBB1E (WEAVER | b. TIAR.TFORD tr REICH MR. AIT KEN, MR. MELROSE, AND JIM CARABILLO BARENBAUM Flash: Shirley Bender elected president of Honor Society. Helen Johnson cracks 100 on her Physics exam! Due to circumstances in our control, there were no more drips in Weaver. (No connection, Shirl and Johnny.) The leaky roof was fixed! But somehow Nature Boy dropped down through it anyway, in time to startle the Weaver Night audience. Remember Reich and Barenbaum clowning around that night? We relearned our alphabet by attending the Letter Club’s first assembly: W,W,W,W. The Philip R. Smith memorial scoreboard was dedicated at the Windham game. Then we gave our parents a taste of their own medicine by presenting Parents’ Night. V Macres became top man on the totem pole in senior elections, and we threw The Book at Kenny Weinstein. The lobby looked like an Ipana ad with committees and club members flashing smiles for Portal pictures. Henry” nearly stabbed his neighbors with his schnoz in the Brotherhood movie. Then spring fever sneaked up on us, and only Class Night and the banquet could remedy it. Gals dooned gowns for the Reception, and fellas and gals both donned them for graduation. But the ' 49-er is still thirsty, and drinking to him only with thine eyes doesn’t satisfy his parched throat. He let the bucket down in to the well and ended his reminiscences. z a j z_r SWnoos WELL.l FINALLY DID IT EVEN IF I HAD TO U5E A LITTLE PRE55UTE GLEE CLUBS SENIORS IN INTER-HIGH CHORUS Front row: Horowitz, Haley, Puglise. Second row: McMa¬ hon, Fineberg, Sidrane. With one eye on practicality and the other on amusement and recreation, each of Weaver’s clubs had another highly successful year. In spite of the trend toward after-school employment Weaver students took a breath to participate with their classmates in the increasing number of organizations within these portals. The masculine counterpart of the active Girls’ League was born this year with the inauguration, under the guidance of Mr. Melrose, of the Boys’ Club. Great interest was shown in the new organization as evidenced by the high percentage of boys joining the club after its conception. Our thanks go to special speakers and invited guests who helped to make our club activities more interesting; but our deepest appreciations go to our club advisors, who unselfishly sacrificed of their time and energies to make sure that each meeting went over just right” and that we never lacked something to do. We shall always remember our years at Weaver as having been a well balanced plan of studies and extra-curricula activities which made them some of the finest years of our lives.
