Quinault 1969-70 published by the Associated Students of Weatherwax High School, Aberdeen, Washington Table of Contents Introduction. Dedication... Administration. . . Favorite Teacher Faculty...... Sophomore section Junior Section . Sports Student Life Senior Section . Ads........... Quinault Staff. Dedication Each year, it is the privilege of the Quinault staff to choose a worthy individual whom they feel has made extra contributions to life at YVcatherwax. This year, because of his many hours of hard work, always accomplished with a willing smile, the Quinault staff is pleased to dedicate the 1969-70 yearbook to Mr. Charles Deering. 2 Mr Deering, affectionately called Charlie by many students, was born in Fima, Washington. While he was still a baby, his family moved to Aberdeen where he attended Franklin and Terrace Heights elementary schools. Due to his father’s illness. Charlie was forced to leave Wratherwax during his junior year. He secured a job at Harbor Plywood and remained there for 32 years. Then, in 1964. after working as a carpenter for five years, Charlie came to Wratherwax Since that time, students and faculty have gni ed Charlie as an extremely happy person. Charlie and his family Loyal supporter of Aberdeen’s team State Janitor 3 I)r Roberts Principal PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE: When we review the events of the past year we discover that thev have been well recorded by the Quinault. We also learn that students have enjoyed many successes as well as a few disappointments. This year has been a particularly good and enjoyable year for the instructors and the administration. We have been able to work more closely with the students in the area of student government where we feel many accomplishments have been gained. We have found that most students are concerned with their world, its problems, challenges, and accomplishments. We have also found that you are willing to confront the problems of the day and to work for solutions for them. It is our fervent hope that the members of the class of 1970 will be able to retain, individually, the same spirit and drive which they have demonstrated through their high school years and apply the same to the challenges which thev will face in life Dr. David L. Five school records were broken and two set for new events, all by underclassmen. Sophomores Gary Shellgren and Glen Preston accounted for 5 of the records; the 100 breast. 200 1M. 200 breast,—and the 200 free 4(X) free respectively. Junior Bob Messmer owns the new 2(H) back record, and shares with Shellgren. Preston and Junior Torn Berglund the 4(X) Medley relay record. It’s been a satisfying year as far as dual meets go, in spite of the 7-7 record. The only heavy losses, other than to always powerful Olympia, were due to the team being greatly undermanned. Aberdeen earned 3rd in the Mark Morris invitational Relay Meet in December and 2nd at the T-Bird Invitational Relays in January. The Bobcats plan to take 19 sw immers and divers to the district meet, hoping for a second or third out of 9 teams. In music we continued the many achievements gained in previous years, again being recognized as the number one band, orchestra, and choir In many clubs and social activities—I'VVD, COG, Boys Fed enthusiasm, sincerity, and leadership was achieved, at times, overwhelmingly through the numbers who participated and gave their time In representing the Student Body. Senate was hindered by an inherited communication and organization gap. However, through the work of each member, they laid the ground work for a new and revised constitution, and the possibility of a Senate ( lass Notably, unqualified success was shown by the many committees and the members who worked many long hours and evenings. Even though many of the problems Senate worked with seemed minor to contemporary thought, the experience gained and the cooperation achieved was the primary success this year Through the united effort on the part of the Student Body in dealing with individual's rights, respect in each other, confidence in our ability to work together to achieve our goals, and sincerity, our purpose was achieved I am very proud to have had the opportunity to work with a tremendous group of people I know with the experience the juniors and sophomores have acquired they will accomplish far greater tasks. Gene Gibson ASB President. 1969-70 ASB Officers TREASURER KEVIN EKAR 119 Turkey Day 1969 Dear AHS, Here in Italy school starts October 1. I have really enjoyed my extra-long vacation although the last months were busy ones. Italian life is so different from American life. No one lives in houses like we know them. They are all apartment buildings, but big ones. The days are quiet. We play cards, talk, have visitors, knit, sew, etc. At night we go to the cinema, to parties or to town. Instead of having dances like we do, they have parties in their homes. Those are really a lot more fun. Meals are at different times, too. Breakfast when we wake up; lunch, the main meal, at 2:00; and dinner about 8:00 (whenever we get home). My family is really tremendous. My Mamma and Papa are doing everything they can for me. I have two sisters-Clementina 16 V$, and Donatella 11. I also have a brother, Mimmo 14 Vi. Our grandmother and grandfather, and aunt live with us too. I really love it here. The whole family makes me feel so wanted. I hope the 1969-70 school year is a good one for everyone. Sincerely, Robin Rodrique Time to say good-bye School days, school days 122 AHS’ exchange student, Monika Holboeck. from Austria AFS Exchange Students A picture of concentration An artful student America, America close to my heart it shall ever be. it will travel with me across the sea into the hearts and homes of the people surrounding me. They shall know of the bonds of friendship, and it will grow till it covers the earth with a warmth and love too strong to break, too real to be fake. America, America I will return to thee to look upon thy grandeur and feel your friendship spreading through me. How else can I express my feelings toward you? You have opened your hearts and homes to me, you have shown me a deep friendship and understanding which I hope I’ve been able to return in some small way. The invaluble experiences I’ve learned in your country will help me in countless ways in future years. I thank you all. Monika Holboeck 123 Seniors Leaders For Class of ’70 This year’s outstanding Senior Class was led by three superb officers; the elite president, Greg Astells, who presided over all the important Senior class meetings, vivacious Vice-President Carol LeMoine, who brought forth many original and beneficial ideas in Senate, and diligent Secretary-Treasurer Mary Sealy, who kept extensive records of all Senior class activities. The wise and experienced Senior Senators, Jane Baxter, Brenda Gunderson, Paula Larson, Sue Rodin, Devin Back holm, Jeff Bowers. Doug Fullaway, and Doug Luark led this year’s Senate through one of its most productive years. With the leadership and enthusiasm of this year’s superior Senior class there is no doubt that they all will go far in their endeavors. V P. Carol LeMoine Sec. - Treas. Mary Sealy Pres. Greg Astells 126 Senators take action as officers guide Senators: Jane Baxter. Brenda Gunderson Back Row: Devin Backholm. Jeff Bowers The 1970 Senior class was one of the most active in recent years. It put forth great efforts in such activities as the UNICEF Drive, U.W.D., and Dollars for Scholars. The Senior boys displayed a contagious spirit with the formation of the first Boys Rooter Association (later opened to the underclassmen) which highlighted ALL football and basketball games. Everyone was proud of the way they supported the players and pep staff, as well as the way they represented A.H.S. Senators: Sue Rodin. Paula Larsen; Back Row: Doug Luark, Doug Fullaway.
