G0 ERNMENT Eddie Smith Student Body President Student Body President's Message The school year started with a much more ac- tive Senate supporting previous decisions and mak- ing new proposals. The Senate approved a United Fund drive, in which the three classes conducted a contest to raise money--the losing class to pre- sent an assembly. The sum of money earned by the three classes was divided among various or- ganizations, such as the American Field Service, March of Dimes, etc. The Senate is composed of the Student Body President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, four boy and girl senators from each class, the class presidents, Boys' Federation President, Coun- cil of Girls President, leaders of various school organizations, and the Yell King. The Board of Control assisted with student government. Meet- ings were held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, at which members discussed and took action on school problems. Student Body assemblies were well organized and entertaining. A very active Pep Club stimu- lated enthusiasm during assemblies and sporting events with pep banners, posters, and booster but- tons. This year the Pep Club did a fine job of organizing a card section. The President appointed a Hall Traffic Com- mittee, which studied hall conditions and sug- gested possible solutions. The Council of Girls, Boys' Federation, Girls' Athletic Association, and many other organizations deserve recognition for their efforts to make this school year successful. As Student Body President, l would like to thank the members of the Board of Control, the Senate, the faculty, and the students for their interest and support in supporting school affairs. Page 0 R DIRECTOR Dr. Ben Curran, Principal, Mr. Peter Londahl, Vice Principal Ben O. Curran was born in Hopkins, Missouri. At an early age he moved to Idaho, however, when he was a senior in high school, the Currans moved to Aberdeen where young Ben enrolled at Weatherwux High School. He lettered in both basketball and baseball here and was graduated in l9l9. During the summer of l9l9, Mr. Curran worked in the woods peeling bark from trees to earn money for college. That fall he enrolled at the University of Washington where he studied for one year. After a year's employment, he entered Washington State College where he was graduated in 1924 with a Bach- elor of Arts Degree. He received his Master's De- gree from Stanford University in 'I949 and Phi Beta Kappa membership. Mr. Curran began his teaching career at Othello, Washington. In 1929 he returned to Aberdeen to teach at Weatherwax. As the principal of our high school, Mr. Curran holds an important position with many burdensome responsibilities-among 'them around l,000 students, twice as many parents, 48 teachers, the school board, and many other citizens of our community. Mr. Curran feels that students are people, too, and should be treated as such. Ably assisting the principal is our vice principal, Mr. Londahl. While space limitations require brevity, we recognize that his responsibilities are numerous and heavy. As the Director of Counselling at Wea- therwax, Mr. Londahl works with administrators, counsellors, teachers, students, and parents to solve o thousand different problems. We sincerely appre- ciate his understanding, intelligent leadership. School Board 'SU -3' , .......,o..v . ff--sf.v.f, 4- eb? Qi ? ,wi Xiu We, the class of '62, began our high school days as an active and enthusiastic class. We remember the excitement of our sophomore year with our entrance into high school. Our Sophomore Hop was one to be remembered, and we all worked with great enthusiasm on the March of Dimes Drive. In our junior year we worked with the seniors on the Junior-Senior Ball. We again showed our enthusiasm by working together to reach our desired goals when we partici- pated in, and won, the March of Dimes Drive. Our senior year was soon upon us. This year we con- ducted several benefit projects in memory of Joyce Jones. As a class, we have always strived toward high ideals and worthwhile goals, and we have always been active partici- pants in worthy school activities. Now, we leave Weatherwax to enter separate worlds of our own. iN as-v .7 'QTY' ve' is' 'Q Q fv,. JOHN ARNSPARGER - Transfer from Port Townsend I5 Football 15 Boy's Fed. 1,2,3. YE if Last fall we .luniors were impressed by the fact that we were no longer the youngest class at Weatherwax We were determined to set a good example for the new Sophomores. To aid us in reaching our goals for this year, we elected as our class officers: President, Russ Kuhns, Vice-President, lim Welch, and Secretary-Treasurer, Sandy Jelovich. With much cooperation from the class, our officers were able to work with the Seniors in presenting a successful Junior- Senior Ball early in 7962. We displayed our energy and talents in many fields by taking an active part in athletics, music, and other or- ganizations. Now we are looking forward to our Senior year with great enthusiasm. yy 4 Q' ROW l: Apukka, Amble, G. Allen, M. Allen. ROW l: Bloser, Bivens, Baumgardner, Burr ROW 2: Auer, R. Allen, Aho, Anderson. This year we have been very busy becoming an active part of our school, its clubs, organizations and student government. For us, this has been a period of adjustment to a new and different life. As Sophomores, we have been busy with various class projects. Our first major class project was sponsoring and planning for the annual Sophomore Hop, held on October 28. We also played an active part in the annual fund raising drive. Our first year of high school has been one that few of us will ever forget. Now we are looking forward to our last two years of high school. Q, ROW l: Bold, Bebich, Baer, Allenbaugh, Block, Amos. ROW 2: Busenbark, Atkins, Bureau, Burbank, Blume, Buck. The purpose of this book is to depict Weatherwax as a small world of our own. Here we, the students, have our own government wherein the officers are our representatives and act as our leaders. We have our own duties and re- sponsibilities toward the school and ourselves. At school we have our own representatives to other ac- tivities such os our sports program, music depart- ment, forensics squad, and others. With the help of our leaders, we are carrying on these responsibilities preparing ourselves to be leaders of the world of to- morrow. This year, through the combined efforts and co- operation of the staff, our advisor, and many others not on the staff, it was our aim to integrate this theme successfully and to make the Quinault the T best yet. Mr. Traxler Muse, Almost from the first day in Quinault, each stu- dent was busy with various duties. Every student sold ads which helped defer some of the cost of the book. Then the imagination was set to workithink- ing up ideas for the different pages, cover design, color, and theme. Soon these ideas were drawn on paper in the form of two sets of dummies, then the master layouts were prepared. Photograph orders were then made, pictures taken, and copy written for the various pages. This was only the beginning. Later came the assembling of the book, checking the copy, index- ing pictures, and much more. The second semester we worked during our free time to complete the book. This year the staff worked with great enthusiasm, ambition, and imagination to make this book truly a memorable one - one that we can be proud of and in the future look back on to recall the happy memories of our high school days at Weatherwax. ef,-, ff Penny Fickeisen Art Editor STAFF f Patty Schmidt Copy Editor Karen Swanson Organizations-Activities Editor Judy Pedersen Dave White U Index Editor Sports Editor QUINAULT STAFF MEMBERS, ROW I: JoAnn Manenica, Elise Jorgensen, Gloria Larson, Mary Kutchera, Cathy Schoening, Ruth Curtis. The four senior girls pictured had this experience last June l2-2l, when they participated in Ever- green Girls' State on the campus at Ellensburg. These girls, Sherrie Failor, Jeri Jacko, Diane Long, and Patty Schmidt, were selected by four Aberdeen service clubs to take part in this function. They were chosen on the basis of scholastic achievement, school activities, and potential leadership. Their goal was to learn more about the duties of our government, how it functions, and its political implications. Each of the 340 girls attending Girls' State took part in campaigns and elections patterned closely after the actual elec- tions held at each level of the government. They also studied the relationship of the different types of governments to each other. None of these girls will ever forget what one of the guest speakers there said to them: I am only one, but I am one. I can't do everything, but I can do something. What I can do, I should do, And what I should do, by the grace of God, I will do. Last summer an event was held that eleven Aberdeen boys will never forget - Boys' State. The representatives from Aber- deen were Rick Boling, Jerry Brower, Bill Cady, Al Close, Keith Folkers, Ron Huffman, Adin Marshall, Bob Norris, Ed Smith, Gary Steinman, and Doyle Wenzel. The event was held on the campus of Pacific Lutheran University, in Parkland, Washington. Boys from all over the state took part in this activity to learn more about the workings of our government. During this one-week period, governments of different types were set up by the boys. They elected officers to carry out government actions just as if thy were actual office-holders. The boys participated in various activities and programs such as mock caucuses and legislative sessions. When Boys' State was over the boys felt that they had completed a most satisfying experience that will serve as a guiding influence in future years. The Cats were beaten only once in conference play and captured the Southwest Washington Conference Football Championship. They were beaten twice in non-conference games - by West Bremerton and Lincoln. Coached by Frank Mach and assistant coaches Al Eklund, Ron Urquhart, and Dewey Van Dinter, these boys rose from a dark horse role to capture the S.W.W. championship. They highlightd the season with a 6-0 win over sixth-in-state Hoquiam on Thanksgiving Day. Eight players were selected for the Southwest Washington All-Conference Squad. Chosen for the first team were halfback Gary Langhans, fullback Russ Kuhns, and tackle Verl Potts. End Gary Hanson and center Eric Penttila made the second team. Guard Ben Radko, halfback Bob Oar, and guard Adin Marshall received honorable mention. Honored at the awards assembly were Ben Radka, who received the Perry Clark Award and Eric Penttila, who received the John Mashin Award. Adin Marshall received the George Savage Award while the Coaches' Award went to Ron Huffman. The Honorary Captains this year were Eric Honorary Captains Penttila and Adin Marshall. They remained unbeaten for the second year in a row. Aberdeen's Junior Varsity is unbeaten in seventeen games and has lost only two games in four years. Under the excellent coaching of Ron Urqu- hart and DuWayne Van Dinter, the team worked very hard and played with a uniform team effort. This year the J.V.'s defeated Olympia 6 to 0, Hoquiam I4 to 6, and Olympia 2l to l2 in their first three games. They tied Centralia 6 to 6, Hoquaim 12 to l2, and beat Centralia l8 to l2 in their last three games. The overall results were a four win, two tie, no loss record for the season. ln the backfield, able men such as Jim Wilson, George Nelson, Clyde Fortney, Lee Carey, Dick Balderson, Larry Pickering, and Bill Kalin took advantage of scoring opportunities. However the touchdowns would not have become reality without linemen like Mike O'Conner, Jerry Cooper, Bill Lockman, Tom Edison, Tom Salmon, and Paul Heiney paving the way for them. These linemen deserve special credit, for they did a great job this year, both on offense and defense. All of the J.V.'s played as members of a com- plete team, and Aberdeen may look forward to a very successful varsity team next year. Page 99 UAD BASKETB LL i Bob Oar 5' ll Junior Guard Mr. Savitz he I Jim Jacobson 6' 2 Senior Forward Terry Campbell 6' 2 Senior Center From the first game with Elma in December to the last game with Ho- quiam in March, the A-Squad basketball team, under the poised leadership of Jim Savitz, made their hustle and talent known throughout the SWW league. The Bobcats were at a height disadvantage the entire season in that every foe they met had taller men. This was a challenge our boys met suc- cessfully with team spirit and hustle. Although the fighting Cats ended up third in the Northern Division of the SWW league, they had the distinction of soundly trouncing the No. l and No. 2 teams-Hoquiam and Olympia. The most consistent point makers for the Aberdeen Bobcats were guards Ed Smith and Johnny Mitchell. In addition they spelled nothing but frustra- tion to their opponents with their clever ball handling and ball stealing antics. Center Terry Campbell gave an excellent account of himself on the boards and against taller opposition. With his war whooping hustle he pulled down many rebounds for the blue and gold. lf a team is to score, they must have the ball. This is where forwards Jim Jacobson and Alan Aho shone. They did a great job rebounding for the Cats and contributed a great deal for the team with their scoring talent. Bob Oar, number one replacement, was a valuable asset to the team with his spark and speed. Alan and Bob will form the nucleus from which next year's team will be built. Jim Savitz, in his first year at AHS, has earned the respect of his team and fans and directed a team that Aberdeen may be proud of. Composed almost entirely of underclassmen, the team improved with each meet, and new material was found for almost every race. Coach Leonard Lawr in his third year of coaching for Weather- wax did an excellent job with the team this year after losing most of his swimmers last year. Ten Aberdeen swimmers qualified for the State Meet at Seattle this year. They are Adin Marshall, Jim Griffith, Kirk Jones, Lynn Daneker, Les Funk, Dave White, Dave Thorson, Ralph Schafer, Bob Kivi, and Steve Walker. Marshall qualified in the 100-yard and 50-yard free styles. Griffith qualified in the 50-yard free style and the 200- yard free style relay. Jones qualified in the l00-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard free style relay. Daneker and Funk both qualified for diving. Schafer, Walker, Kivi, and White qualified for the 200-yard medley relay, and Griffith, Jones, Thorson, and White qualified for the 200-yard free style relay. This year's team was composed of only three seniors, while there were eight juniors, ten sophomores, and three freshmen. With this many returning swimmers, Weatherwax may look for- ward to an excellent swim team in 1963. Entering the Northern Division of the South West Washington Conference, the Bobcat baseball team put forth a tremendous effort toward victory this year. With the guiding assistance of Coach Mach and Managers Al Close and Louis La Dow, they were confident of a good season, weather permitting. On March l5, ten lettermen reported to Pioneer Park for the first practice of the year. They were: Steve Barry, Tom Edison, Jerry Brower, Keith Folkers, Jim Furth, John Gudaz, B. J. Porter, Ben Radka, Wilson Scores! Steve Smith, and Walt Wilson, along with several other players. After practicing diligently for many days, they played Hoquiam, Centralia, and Olympia twice each for a rating in the Conference. The team also held several practice games with Montesano, Elma, and other teams in the vicinity. These boys work hard each year to build a good name for our school among baseball fans, so let's con- tinue to give them real support next season. Turn-out for this year's rifle team was the largest in eight years. The increase, which brought the team membership to 57, was responsible for the purchase of two Model 52 Winchester match rifles. The team was successful in the National Rifle Association Postal Matches in which their scores were sent to Washington, D. C. and rated against other schools all over the U. S. The team, coached by Mr. Billy Sulli- vent, had excellent results when they took part in the sectional matches in Seattle. Mr. Sullivent also accompanied the five best shooters to the state outdoor cham- pionships in Wenatchee in May. The officers elected to head this year's team were: President, Ron Johansen, and Secretary-Treasurer, Steve Eggleston. The letter winners who returned as members of the team this year were seniors, Ron Johansen, Paravena Jackson, Steve Eggleston, and Sara McLean, jun- iors, Melanie Hancock, and Don Abbott. The purpose of the rifle team is to teach and develop good habits in handling firearms. Its activities began on September I5 and lasted until May l5. Under the direction of Coach Al Eklund, the members of the Weatherwax High School Tennis Team have prac- ticed day after day. With several returning veterans as well as the new team members, the boys have brought about a successful season. Everyone al- ways came through with a good performance. A team was formed with each wrestler in a division governed by his weight. There are eleven weight divisions: 105 pounds, 114, 122, 129, 137, 140, 147, 156, 167, 177, and 193 pounds. The wrestling coach this year is also new to Weatherwax. He is Dewey VanDinter and some might remember him as assistant football coach. He did an excel- lent job organizing and training a team that won seven out of its ten matches. As this was Aberdeen's first year of wrestling, the team com- peted with the junior varsity squads of other schools that have had wrestling in years before. Swantek, Wook, Heiny, Pruitt. Walden, Penttila, Hutton. well, Taft. Twelve wrestlers qualified for Sub-District Match at Tum- water. Of these, four qualified for the District Match at Van- couver. Junior Russ Kuhns won the District Match in the 193 pound class and qualified for the State Match at Pullman. Kuhns placed fifth in the state at the State Meet. With a majority of wrestlers being underclassmen this year, the wrestling team outlook looks very good for next year. '!
