DEDICATION We of Grays Harbor, are indebted to the sea around us. We depend on it for food, industry and pleasure. The mystery, complexity, and vastness of the ocean can never truly be expressed. We know little of the stirrings that are constantly in motion. The deep, dark waters hold innumerable unsolved mysteries. We are aware, how- ever, that one cannot stand on the shore without realizing the immensity of surging power before him. Much of the vast storehouse of the ocean is still to be uncovered and utilized. The waves roll in endlessly-sometimes lapping at the soft sand play- fullyg oftentimes pounding the shore with its turbulence. The sea has many moods. It is only fitting, then, that we, the Class of l958,dedicate this Quinault to the Ocean, which benefits us in so many ways, both known and unknown. Page 4 . .V E-u..,n.s. . , , . SEA FEVER I rnust down to the seas again, for the call of the running ticle, Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be deniedg And all I ask is a windy clay with the white clouds flying, And flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea gulls crying. I must down to the seas again to the vagrant gypsy life, To the gulls way and the whales way where the wind's like a whetted knifeg All I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow rover And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over. We have come to a better understanding of this motto since we have entered high school. Because of this fact, we have grown physically as well as mentally from our Freshman year to our Senior year. We entered high school as Sophomores with mixed emotions. Before long, however, we were under- taking our first responsibilities as members of the Weatherwax High School student body. We were ably led by Roger Donahoe as President, john Easterly as Vice-President and Diane Gaydou as Secretary. Since this was our first year as high school students, we tackled our first project industriously and came in second in the March of Dimes Drive. We had various bake sales and car washes to raise the money. Oul' Sophomore Hop was called Tropical Paradise and the decorations led one to believe that he was attending a dance in true South Sea Island style. It was enjoyed by all and will especially be remembered by the Class of '58. Our junior year arrived before we knew it! We had a secure feeling because we were between the other two classes and midway through our high school education. The entire class worked very hard for the March of Dimes Drive to raise money for the polio fund. We had a bottle drive, car wash, bake sale, and we sold peanuts and suckers at school during noon hour. Although we came in last, we knew we were able to help someone less fortunate than ourselves. The theme for the junior-Senior Ball was Calypso Both classes worked very hard to make it the fine success it was. Our officers for that year were: Gary Gores, President, John Easterly, Vice-President, and Gail Barre, Secretary. Now our final year is ending. This year has been out best and will be our most remembered. The seniors this year were led by Ray Kahler as President, john Easterly as Vice-President, who has served faithfully throughout his three years of high school, and Darlene Fickeisen as Secretary. When we leave this school, we will miss not only the classes and the teachers, but little things like the noisy halls between classes, the crowded locker alleys, and the oppor- tunity to see one's classmates and friends during school. Many of these students will continue searching for higher education. While they are learning, they may be Not at the top, but climbing . . . Although there were few large projects until the second semester, the junior class buckled down with willingness to their first task-collecting money for the Polio Foundation. Next came the long-awaited junior-Senior Ball. The classes combined effort and talent, creating an unusual theme and fanciful deco- rations, to help produce a successful dance. The All-School Play, a new addition to the school calendar, gave the dramatists of the class a chance to show their acting ability. Together with the other classes, they helped to make the play a big success. The juniors also participated in sports, clubs, and studies, working equally well in all of them. Many students held offices and excelled in sports and studies. They could be found every- where-yelling at Pep assemblies and games, participating in talent assemblies, digging up the gridiron, burning the midnight oil, or working in the innumerable activities around school. Thus. as the year came to a close, the juniors looked back on a wonderful and successful year. However, the Class of '59 did not waste any time dreaming about the year's good times. Instead, they began to anticipate their final year as seniors. JUNIORS - FIRST ROW: Bilbro, Auer, Allen, Asplund, Blacketer, Blacketer, Catterson. A year that was filled with joys and sor- rows, troubles and mishapsg but a year that was new and dif- ferent for us. The high school curriculum in itself proved to be a real challenge. It was one more step toward the future, Throughout the year, we were kept busy with all of our classes and various clubs and organizations that we had joined. Crowded into our busy schedules were the games, and the dances that followed them. Formal dances, too, entered the picture and added to the excitement. Under the supervision of Mr. Traxler, the advisor, the Quinault class worked hard to meet deadlines. Barbara Erickson and Darlene Fickeisen, co-editors, deserve many merits for their time and effort spent on this year's an- nual. Among their many responsibilities were the planning of the book, organization of the staff, providing leadership and guidance for the staff throughout the year, and checking the final layouts. After the first few weeks, the Quinault class worked 'smoothly and efficiently to bring this 1958 Quinault to you. Quinault Staff: First Row. Fickeisen, Mr. Traxler, Erickson. Second Row. These are the words that are frequently heard in Ocean Breeze class. Working on the O. B. staff is a year-round job, and a big one. Every two or three weeks deadlines arrive and copy must be handed in. Articles are varied and range from fashions to sports and often the students must interview many people for their articles.
