E .ref fi NF? lu Here we have Aberdeen, singing her way to fame . . the opening line of our beloved Alma Mater will always bring back memories of the happy days at A.H.S. In our sophomore year, we were again at the bottom of the ladder as we were when we entered junior high. Everyone felt a little lost at first, but it wasn't long before we got in the swing of things. Our first participation in school activities was electing class officers to lead us. We chose President, Ray Russell, Vice President, Harvey Hendrickson, and Secretary, Candace Harrall. Jingle Jitters, our successful sophomore hop, was our next activity, Ocosta also shared our happy sophomore year with us. As juniors, we became better acquainted and adjusted to busy school life. The ol' grind of work and pleasure will long be remembered. Activities began to grow, and they included class car washes, bake sales, and participation in the exciting Junior-Senior Ball. Class officers were: President, Ron Makos, Vice President, Tom Hendrickson, and Secretary, Karin Leaf. During our senior year, we were ably led by President, Tom Eastman, Vice President, Martin Audette, and Secretary, Darlene Jacobs. Since the annual Shuttle Broadcast wasn't held, due to unavoidable circumstances, a new celebration was ushered in known as Pep Week. The queen, Judy Phelan, and her two princesses, Judy Jako, and Mary Jane Kennedy, reigned over the gay festivities. Our celebrated team had excellent support from everyone. Spirit and pep prevailed during the week sometimes sacrificing the homework! Other gala affairs were: May Court Sweetheart Court and the Junior- Senior Ball, Hi-Jinx, and the Senior Play were both memorable occasions with much planning and fun. Each day we could see the progress of the new modern cafeteria, which was completed toward the end of the year. All these main events during three years of high school made us aware that a chapter of our school life was closing. With sadness and anticipation we were ready to take our places and meet the challenges of the future. -12- 'V' WWMW L. The Young Men's Business Association, headed by Leif Tangvald, sold pop, pop- corn, and hot dogs at the games. During Pep Week they sold popcorn in mega- phones, thus increasing sales. Under the leadership of the advisor, Mr. Londahl, Boys' Fed. was a great success this year. Thank you, Mr. Londahl, for a job well done. wick, jim Kelley. Weatherwax was privileged this year with the presence of Waldo King, our new band director, who did a terrific job in developing a superior concert band as well as an outstanding dance band. Although Mr. King is new to Aberdeen, he taught music for six years previous to his arrival here. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Central Washington College of Education and his Master of Music degree from .the University of Oregon. One of Mr. Kin 's outstandin accom lishments this ear was the develo ment of 3 3 . Y . . a dance band, now renowned throughout the city of Aberdeen. This band is a seven- teen-piece group and uses the same instrumentation as the popular dance bands. For the Swing Concert, the band played such favorite tunes as Holiday For Winds, selections from Ballet for Young Americans, Street Scenes, and a march called The Nutmeggersf' Two members of our high school band were honored by being selected to play in the All-Northwest High School Band, which was held in Boise, Idaho this year. The two .talented students are Roger McRea and Dave Kinley. Ray johnson, President of band, presided over meetings, assisted by Roger McRea, Student Director, Mike Gallagher, Librarian, and Dave Kinley, Drum Major. This organization has given to the community of Aberdeen an enjoyable season of outstanding band music, and all are looking forward to hearing them next year. 3 z 2 -f 5 'ggi 153321 '5 A K 'Y' 'f , fe' -f , W S tx Q V y S? The number of choir members exceeded 80, and from these members the following officers were elected:President, Tom Eastman, Vic-President, Tom Thompson, Secretary- Treasurer, Patsy Spoon, Student Director, John Rorickg Soprano-section Leader, Karla AndersongAlto-section Leader, Ann Laaksoneng Tenor-section Leader, Bill Betting Bass- section Leader, Richard Moore, Librarian, Carolyn Cannon, Robe Manager, Roberta Tegen. The first performance on their schedule was the Christmas program. The choir received invitations from the business clubs of Aberdeen and sang for the Lions, Rotary, and Kiwanis Clubs. In all of these programs the choir performed very well, presenting some traditional Christmas carols of other lands. Immediately following this, they took part in the Christmas assembly at the school auditorium. just to add a little variety, they appeared to sing the last number, Twas the Night Before' Christmas, dressed in pajamas and robes, and carrying teddy bears. The next appearance of the choir was in February when they took part in the annual Swing Concert. Performing such numbers as I Won't Dance, and It's A Big, Wide, Wonderful World, they brought out the theme of modern and popular music. The final appearance of the choir was in the spring at the Spring Concert, also an annual affair. In this, the theme was more toward serious music, and the choir did an out- standing job. -..59.. :Q fm-aww if 1 ,H Q l li l E ' c Q4 Basis Mutha H111 Sllblll lzlrrlnrt hlren JILICI Bob Ye trout Donna Xllutrtrc Harp Arn Sclnftr Flute-1 Carol Bet-ken. Orclz ed fra The Weatherwax High School Orchestra has enjoyed a highly successful year under the direction of Gordon Edlund. Mr. Edlund started his teaching career in 1937. He began teaching in Aberdeen four years ago and has since become a popular and re- spected member of our faculty. The most significant event of the year for the orchestra was the annual Swing Concert, with the theme, Hello Young Lovers. They presented a program called Val- entine Review, which featured songs pertaining to the heart, such as Sweetheart of Sigma Chi, A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody, On the Street Where You Live, and Say It With Music. The program was thoroughly enjoyed by the public, who came very willingly, remembering the fine performances of the orchestra in previous years. Felicitations to Karla Anderson, Mary Minard, and Alltrina Henning, all members of the orchestra, who were honored by being selected from many students to participate in the All-Northwest High School Orchestra. The meet was held in Boise, Idaho, April second through sixth. These girls are excellent examples of the talented students who are members of the orchestra. Orchestra meetings were presided over by the President, Bob Yearout. Supporting officers were Gretchen Bigelow, Vice-President, and Karen jacka, Secretary-Treasurer. Senior, junior, and sophomore representatives for orchestra were Martha Hill, Karla Anderson, and Sandra Homchick, respectively. We are sorry the senior members of the orchestra are leaving, and we hope the remaining and new members of the orchestra will uphold and carry on the superior achievements of our high school orchestra. QI' 5 , Sfafe Sponsored by the American Legion, Boys' and Girls' States are held annually on the campus of Central Wasliington College of Education at Ellensburg, Washington. Boys' State, held from june 18-25, gives its delegates an opportunity to actually participate in governmental affairs. Similarly, Girls' State, held during the week of June 26 to july 3, teaches girls the importance of their government and politics. Providing an opportunity to live together as self-governing citizens and a better understanding of the functions of our government are two of the aims of this educa- tional program. Potential leaders, usually high school juniors, are sent by service clubs on the basis of scholarship and citizenship. Over 350 girls represented their respective communities at Girls' State, while nearly 500 boys enjoyed the advantages of Boys' State. This experience is always appreciated by those who attend and proves to be very valuable to them in later life. The lasting friendships made during these weeks, along with many other wonderful memories, will long be cherished by the 1956 Boys' and Girls' State delegates of AHS. lr Y , ' v Q HQ! --.fi FIRST ROW, left to right: Bob Zieman, Ron Makos, Neil Carns, Scott Pinckney, Paul Williams. This game was the first conference tilt and brought White's men a tie-for-first in Capital League standings. ABERDEEN 0 LINCOLN 14 The state's third-ranked team proved too much for the men in Blue and Gold. The Abes, led by Cecchi and Pruett, capitalized on breaks and Aber- deen mistakes to maintain their unbeaten slate. ABERDEEN 7 HUDSON BAY 12 ABERDEEN 31 STADIUM 0 For the final game on Stewart Field, the Cats came through with a smashing 31-0 victory over favored Stadium, With power plus the Bobcats played one of the finest passing games in recent history on our field. The win kept our title hopes open. Ray Hajduk played one of his finest games of the season at the signal-calling post. ABERDEEN 16 EVERETT 38 ABERDEEN 12 OLYMPIA 23 Outplaying the highly favored Bears to the tune of 12 to 2 in the first half, Aberdeen failed to stop the Olympia offense in the final half. Maybe Olympia was stunned by a good defense, but Yokum and Harder, the backs, piled up yardage on just plain hard running, The Bobcat backfield and line never gave up and showed surges of power throughout the game. This is always Olympia's final game and their biggest. The win placed them in a first-place tie. ABERDEEN 18 HOQUIAM 7 Good day, good field, and a good game. Forthe seventh time in eight years Aberdeen beat Hoquiam. Coming back in the second period to erase a one- point deficit, the Cats ran hard on the ground and ran a good defense to stop the Grizzly backs. The victory gave the Cats a solid share of second place in Capital League standings. The win was a fine tribute to our new coach, Don White, and his as- sistant, George Palo. ev . .fig W. 5 c 5 X J ' ' .. ,B , ' ,,..f. ' 3 .ms an.. . af.:-fa. :WN 'h 3. pe f V.: A, .:. The 1956 B squad's two fine coaches, Mr. Newman and Mr. Eklund, explained the success as being the complete team effort. All 33 boys played as one team, and every member of the squad saw some action in most of the games. The hardest game would be hard to single out, but the final tilt with Quinault was one of the finest played. Aberdeen squeezed out a 13 to 12 victory earlier in the season, and the Indians were determined to win. Aialeflaf 19 I9 7 A berth in the State Tournament was not in the cards for the Aberdeen Bobcats this year. Although the win-loss record was not too impressive, the young Cats man- aged to play some top-class ball in several games. This was one of the few years Aberdeen was able to make a complete sweep over cross-town rivals, Hoquiam, in varsity competition. Playing the toughest pre-conference schedule in recent times, the green squad came out on top only once. By playing bigger and better teams, however, the Cats were able to gain more experience. This schedule included major tournament competitors, such as Port Angeles, Kelso, and West Bremerton. The second time around, Aberdeen was able to defeat Kelso, and came within one point of upsetting West Bremerton. By the time conference play rolled around, the Cats had improved considerably, but not enough to beat the two Tacoma posers. The 1956- I957 season was definitely a building year for the Bobcats. The starting five included two seniors, two juniors, and one sophomore. Veteran Ray Hajduk played guard and Skip Russell forward. juniors Dan O'Claray and Scott Weatherwax, played guard and center respectively. Sophomore, Rick Fisher, played at the forward position, and was also one of the leading scorers. Coach George Palo looks to a brighter future next year with these three returning starters, along with a strong reserve force including Lance Talley, Joe Norkoski, Rich Strom, and Bardy Barshaw.
