Besides appearing in assemblies these musicians were enthusiastically received at the three suc- cessful concerts given this year. Instrumental solos were given by members of the orchestra at the vocal meet held in Kelso, April IS. Then two weeks later the Southwest Wasliingtori Instrumental Music Meet was held in Hoquiam. The orchestra gave an outstanding performance which earned them a superior rating. Rllflilgf tSlllDL'1'10l' Bdlflgj' The XX'eatherwax a cappella choir of fifty voices concluded an eventful year under the direction of Kenneth Hjelmervik. The second annual series of Sunday afternoon concerts brought splendid applause from music lovers, who recognized the thrilling beauty of fifty voices rising in harmony. The choir's appear- ances before the service clubs of the city were met with sincere enthusiasm. At the Southwest Wlashington Music Meet the choir presented a superior performance, for which Aberdeen was justly proud. Excellent in Song The Girls' Glee club was organized this year under the excellent leadership of Miss W.1nda Gavareski. This group appeared in the concerts, and sang for several assemblies. The thirty members arrived at Kelso excited and breathless, wearing their uniforms of white sweaters, blue skirts, and gold emblems. After a performance of color and beauty, they were awarded a rating of excellent , Mzlfzk Makela X5C'ith marching feet and striking new blue and gold uniforms, the high school band was the inspiration for student body pep and spirit. Champions in the true sense of the word, this group was composed of 65 young musicians- all boys. Since the band was organized in 1928, it has been exclusively a male organization. Under the direction of Mr. Hjelmervik the band represents Weatherw'ax's highest musical achievement. For the past two years the band has reached the highest rating possible at the Regional Meet. Because of their superior rating they played over the National Broadcasting Company in Portland, March 23. Three concerts were given this year. the proceeds being used to finish paying for the band uniforms and choir robes. Exemplifying school spirit the band never failed to appear at football and basketball games encouraging the teams on to victory. School rallies could not have been complete without these spirited musicians. 33 -,A I . ff yi' J H1 flllkf , 111 X xx x Lll 11L s111LL11 11 LII 11L In 1 L IUIIS 11 IL NL 1 1rL11LL 1111 III 111LI HLIIFI 1 IIXIS s L L011 111111 II1L s11LLLss OI L I -s N U Q X s L s 0 SL IIV L IS 11113 10 L xx111 D01 SllfI'x lN 1111s1L1 01 LLrL111011 LL1 IIOUIX xx ls HFLSLH CL 0 IL 111111 III' Qr0111 I01 ID OLIISI 1nLI111Lf pLrI0r111LmLL OI 1xx0 XXLL s IIIOIL 11111 onc 111nLIrLL 5IlIL Lllls rL1L11sL IHNIIIII 10 p1LsL111 IIIIS x.1r1L1y S1018 x L IL HIL 01 I1 fLI L LL L NL L 1 1L1 QIII Ll11I1 LIIILFIIIDLYH xxLrL Ls1L1s LxL1 ' 1 L L 111L XILISIL xx ls ILIHIISIILL S '55 ISOI1 NI1IILr s 0rLI1Ls1r1 s1 IC LNLIII ' S CII LF IIHIH I IIUOHS 'UL l I'C'lL 0 xmv 11s L LI L s NJXX xx111 M1r1111 IDLs111011I 1111 IDOII SIlTI'x IS L 11 IIILIII IIOIS 11 1 JI' IN K. Under the capable supervision of Miss Sharp, the Council of Girls' adviser, the girls enjoyed another eventful year. lt was crowded with outstanding highlights, such as the Tolo. the Mothers' Tea, the Girls' Mixer, special assemblies, and many other successful projects, which were made pos- sible by the constant cooperation of the entire CQ. O. G, Much of the credit of CQ. O. Gfs smooth running falls on the industrious officers: Virla Talley, president, Annette Olsen, vice president, Betty Billings. secretaryg and lone Anderson, treasurer. The Cabinet was ably assisted by the committee chairmen and their untiring workers. The committees ran smoothly with these chairmen directing the activities: Frances Frazer, XXfelcoming committeeg Lucille Grigsby, Locker committeeg Grace Hill, Rest Room committeeg Nell Hath- away. Social committeeg .laccjueline Balch. Red Cross committee: Muriel Young, Attendance com- mittee, 'lean Hill, Art committeeg Faith Bayha, Displays committeeg Dolores Burton, Friendly coma mittee: and Carol Lunclgren, Program committee. This year the Council of Girls was governed by eighteen efficient officers. This girls' senate consisted of fourteen girls from the various home rooms, and the remaining four were the elected officers. Using a different theme than usual, the Big and Little Sister and Social committees carried out the annual girls' mixer with a tea and entertainment which were enjoyed immensely by all the girls. ln former years the mixer was held in the gymnasium with dancing forming the entertain- ment, while this year a tea was held so that the girls were able to become more accjuainted. Hello tags were distributed during the day which told the girl's name and grade. Planned this way, the mixer proved very successful. The ,junior Red Cross committee, headed by 'laccjueline Balch, was highly praised for the cooperation it won during the Red Cross drive and the Thanksgiving food drive. Many Thanks- giving food baskets were distributed to needy families at Thanksgiving with the help of the Boys' Federation. A different plan than usual was used in filling the baskets. Two home rooms co- operated on each box, filling it with the necessary items. The Tolo dance was another C. O. G. highlight. Using the theme, Sadie Hawkin's Day, many clever ideas were carried out. At school the feminine half of the student body was doing special favors for the boys, and carrying on in that certain Sadie Hawkins way. The decorations and programs of the Tolo dance were praised highly, and much credit is due to the cooperation and interest of the entire Social committee. The theme selected and carried out by the Council of Girls was Harvest Time Is All the Time. The Display committee worked out many clever ideas with this theme. Another interesting event of the year, was the visit of Miss Beth Fitton, social speaker from the Wasliin 'ton State De uartment of Education. She s oke to the 'irls on Personalit and held A 2- A 'l t j . P 5- j 5 private conferences with individuals who desired them. Her talk was greatly enjoyed by the en- tire Council of Girls. Miss Fitton was also entertained at a luncheon given in her honor by the Cabinet. This year a newly organized committee, the XX'elcoming committee, was formed to take the alace of the Bi v and Little Sister committee. This new committee, headed b' Frances Frazer, out- . fa . . . l . lined and followed plans which made it much more active than the former committee. In the past, the Big and Little Sister committee arranged for freshmen girls to visit the school during senior week, and for entertaining them. The new XXfelcoming committee did more for the new-comers to Nweatherwax. To start off their plans they entertained the new stu' dents of Wfeatherwax as the guests of the Council of Girls at a party, March lv. Graduation plans for the Class of I9-io. illustrated by a style show, was the feature of the annual Mothers' Tea held April 17. Following a short program tea was served and a style show was presented, which was greatly enjoyed by the mothers. The girls signed up in home rooms for work on the various committees for Mothers' Tea, and this way almost the entire C. O. G. par- ticipated in the affair. As another school year drew to a close the CI. O. G, again proved the worthiness and suc- cess of their organization. 37 - 11 f' 1w1ffff421.E'? . . - - '11, N 1', 2,-'11,-'gi 11. 35211 1' . - EMT ?c, 1 I . ff111'f1ni. f ':'5i,w3'f ,f 1 - 2,131 , . n11.v-5-iii' ' ,rl 111 111111 111111111 1 1111 111111 1 1 111c1 1101s 1 1 IX 11Is1111 XIIIILIIQIKI Ixc11I1 cr111o11t1 Us X IoxcI1111 ' 1 111 1 1111 I1 1 1 Co111Lss11111 LI 1111111111 I 011 1 IIC 1111 IL 1 1 s R Io1I11r1o111111 cc I-I1 LK 1111111111 IS r 01111 N 1111 1 110111 111 111 111 141111 111 1 I1tLp1tr11I1 S1 111111 1 NN 111111011 SCI I1111111 I 11 111 1 1111s Img 38 r in F I I nik ? W W' 'W HG' 119 ul W1'Ib WI.IllQL?ll jizfp The Bobcat track squad completed a fairly successful season although handicapped by the lack ofa track. Through cooperation, and a never dying competitive spirit the squad members hurdled their loss, in favor of success. ln the first and only pre-season meet, a five-man team entered a contest with Olympia and Puyallup, The team competed on an unofficial basis, mainly for practice and seasoning. The small delegation showed up well, scoring Zyl points. The first seasonal contest, in which Aberdeen was represented, was the tenth annual running of the Clentralia Relays. Aberdeen as well as Hoquiam was overwhelmed by other Southwest teams, and placed well down on the other end of the scoring column. The following squad of 26 boys represented XX!eatherwax: james jones, john Gigstad. Ed johnson, Fred Messmer, Al Boett- cher, Frank Owen, Neal House. Nick Ciirgich, Eldridge Allen, Evert Cfarlson, Sherman Hatley. jack McGuire, john Svicarovich, Morris jones, Ed Fitzpatrick, Bob Trager, Glenn Hilliard, How- ard Hopkins, jack Barnes, Mike Simera, Harold Elmer, and john Engle. By taking ll out of Iwi first places the Bobcats hit their stride walloping Clhehalis. The outstanding member of the Cat squad was Ed Fitzpatrick, who took three firsts for high honors. On the Saturday following the Clhehalis meet, Aberdeen journeyed to Olympia for a tri- angular contest with the Bears and the Stadium high school aggregation. Hard luck dogged the Aberdeen squad when Bill Smith was unable to compete because of a had leg. The ailment forced Smith to abandon running forthe balance of the season. Stadium won the meet, scoring 60 5 -i points, Aberdeen copped second place with 57 points, and Olympia took the cellar post. Fitzpatrick again won honors by leading the Bobcat scorers with 13 points. Other stalwart performers were jack Mcfiuire, who ran the mile in 41.52-i, and Bob Trager, who tied with a Stadium man in the high jump. The height was S ft. 8 in. Before the county meet in Hoquiam the Bobcat squad was again hard hit when Cliff Ham- mer was ordered to stop athletics by physicians. Aberdeen placed third, behind Hoquiam and Shel- ton. Although the Bobcats finished third, they furnished the thrills of the afternoon. Ed Fitzpat- rit k, the star performer throughout the season, romped through in fine style and tied the all-time high hurdle record, which is I6 seconds. ln the Airitl contest Don Eggen put on the steam to break the high mark of 1.8 set in 1935. His time was il seconds flat. The relay team went to work and won the SHO relay. Their time was 1.55.5 which is one-tenth of a second less than the standing county record. The performances in the county meet entitled Aberdeen to send a squad of five men to Olympia to compete in the district finals. The men representing the Bobcats were: jack McGuire. Tex jones, Fred Messmer, Ed Fitzpatrick, and Don Eggen. Nine JJTDIII Bullwy Witli new uniforms, a new league, and Coach Sarboe at the runs, Aberdeen pointed toward a banner year in baseball. The team was headed for the first pennant in the newly organized league. Among nine returning lettermen there were three pitchers, a veteran infield, and a good outfield. The fellows have shown a lot of spirit and ability in winning their first three starts by impressive scores. The players on the traveling squad were: Les Barry and Bill Hall, catchersg Carter Hitt, lst base, Roger Balcombe, 2nd base, Bert Weston, 3rd base, Eddie Blonski, shortstop, XVes Freed, Louie Nicholas, and jack Bowley, outfield, Ralph Thomson and Bill Leith, pitchers, Henry Sliva and Tony Bezer, utility, and Dale Gunderson, manager. The eight teams were divided into two divisions, the northern being comprised of Aber- deen, Hoquiam, Raymond, and Centralia. Four matches were played with all four teams competing. Aberdeen larruped their way to a complete victory over all of the other teams with three firsts and a second. After the match play, all eight teams met together for a four medal play tournament. At the third quarter of the tournament the Aberdeen Bobcats stood high and had a good chance of winning the championship. The lettermen were: Stewart Armour, john Chamberlin, Ed Hulbert, Cliff Swanson, Bob Swanson, Bob Ingram, jim Yuskoff, Boyd Donley, and jack Wtitkins. Splash Al'f13ffI Ten major swimming meets comprised the Aberdeen Bobcats' swimming team program. In the first meet of the year the Bobcats bested the Longview Natators, but they traveled here to de- feat the Bobcat team. Then the Vancouver Splashers were hosts to the Bobcats and beat them in their pool by a large score, but later Aberdeen superiority swamped Vancouver. In the meet between Tacoma high schools, Lincoln and Stadium. both defeated Aberdeen twice, but by close scores. The Everett Natators were hosts to the Bobcats and won by a very small margin. The Everett team traveled down to Aberdeen to take another victory. The final showing of the season was made March 29, when Coach Fowler took the boys to the State Meet, in which the team was edged out of third by one point to take fourth place. Athletics are included in the course of every sophomore girl, but any girl in school who has participated in girls' sports is entitled to active membership in the Girls' Athletic Associa- tion. President for the year was Dolores Burton, vice president, Marion Peckinpaughg secre- tary-treasurer, Hildred Germain, and adviser, Miss Conradt. To wear a G. A. A. sweater a member must earn at least 600 points for one stripe. All additional stripes cost the participant 600 points each. When the student is a senior she may have three stripes. An exceptional athlete may earn three stripes and a star. In the fall the girls started a vigorous season of volley ball. The sophomores came out on top, putting the juniors into second place and the seniors into third place. Part of the suc- cesses of the volley ball season was due to the student managers, Mary Campbell assisted by Alice Glidden, and Betty Bumgardner assisted by Louise Vasbinder. Ping-pong, one of the highlights of the athletic program, gave honors to a sophomore, Catherine Hobi, with the runner up being Shirley Balch. Maxine Landreth and Maxine Craw- ford were the capable managers. The basketball season started in early spring with many eager enthusiasts turning out. Ellen Ingo, assisted by Virginia Karshner and Gay White, was the manager. On bright spring days the Hiking club walked to distant places. Mabel 'loscelyn was the manager of the club. The Bicycle club members were also busy exercising their legs. The co-managers were Betsy Bayha and Dolores Corom. The spring sports, baseball, tennis, horseshoes, and archery, were well received by the girls. Wzrriri days of spring caused many baseball-minded girls to turn out for the sport. liirst teams were selected from those turning out. Each class was represented. Girls were able to turn out for horseshoes so that they could add extra points to their scores. The spring also brought forth archery. The girls did not have a tournament but they competed with each other to see who could run up the highest score. Competition was high during the tennis season. Those turning out took part in a lad- der tournament. Competition with other schools was open to any girl in school in Wfeatherwax. This year for the first time Aberdeen and Hoquiam Girls' Athletic Associations united for a Harbor Play Day. The Play Day will be continued each year hereafter. Five delegates from fifty-four schools were invited. The morning session was held at the Hoquiam school where luncheon was served at noon. The afternoon was spent at the Miller Natatorium. In October a Play Day was held in Olympia and one was held at Chehalis-Centralia in April. It would be impossible for the G. A. A. in this school to continue without excellent supervision. Miss Arline Conradt, instructor, in her first year at Wfeatherwax established a last- ing impression on the Girls' Athletic Association. 59 I SIITIIIILI w111LI 1111 w 1011111 so111uxI1L1L ' 1 1 11111 s thc not K 5XNLLI 1111 s11 11111 I11 1 Iwo Ill ll 1 1 111 II U1 Ik II 1 s 0 III II14 1 111 1 Q 1 ll xx 60 ,Q . t , ' I ' 131, l.'I'I1.1t's1I1c XVII' I l1c.11'1I it.
