6 xzxqfi gb V WEATHERLY, PENNSYLVANIA, PAST AND PRESENT Embracing a history spanning l2O years, the pictures on these two pages depict Weatherly from the time it started as a small lumbering village, known as Black Creek, to the present day of local plants manufacturing everything from an electronic tube to a tasty candy bar. The old-timers relate of trips to Glen Onoko, a dance den, a walk to the Iron Bridge, or a good game of ball when the main bill featured Lovatt's Pets. was plunged Into the bellrgerency Early Amerrcan setbacks snapped the Amerrcan publrc Into the realIzatIon that the real thrng had come On February 15 1942 the Brrtrsh port of Srngapore fell to the Japanese and on Apral 9 the eprc defense of Bataan came to an end as the Japanese overran the Phrl Ipprnes John Luhman of Weatherly was among the heroes to fall to the enemy here Erght days later Jrmmy Daalrttle led a force of rarders over the Japanese caprtal Two years later It was revealed that these planes came from the U S S Carrrer Hornet O May 6 the Manrla Bay Fortress of Corregrdar caprtulated to Japan The Japanese attacked the Aleutrans on June 12th and durrng thIs perrod the U S Pa crfrc Fleet won a decIsIve battle ID the Coral Sea Later In the year the spotlIght turned to the North Afrrcan theater where on November I3 the Allres began the drIve to rId that country of the Germans On January 27 1943 the world was astounded at the announcement of the meetrng of Presrdent Roosevelt wIth PrIme Mrnaster Churchrll at Casablanca Here they mapped out the pnmary plans for vrctory In Aprrl 1943 Weatherly recerved the news of the death of Charles Eroh the fIrst local boy to be krlled In thIs sectron of the world In World War ll On May 13th It was offrcrally announced that the battle of Afnca was over and that the Germans were drrven from that theater On September 3 the Allres landed on the ltalIan marnland and fIve days later Italy sur rendered to the condItIons lard down at the Casablanca conference ThIs event greatly rarsed Allred hopes and the news lrght flashed to the ltalran theater as the Amerrcan and Brrtrsh armres started the long march up the ltalIan Boot towards Rome Late In November the fIVe and one half month defense of the Russran CITY of Stalrngrad ended when the Reds turned the tables and Isolated 330 OOO Axrs troops The eprc defense began on August 21 Nrneteen hundred forty three closed wIth a Izrrghter outlook on the war although the Allres fully realrzed the task that lay before them The year ot many changes 1944 started out In the POCITIC when In February the Unrted States Navy moved Into the regron about the Marshal Islands to strIke at the very heart of th Japanese PacIfIc strongholds Contrnurng devastatrng our blows agarnst I-lrtler s fortress Europe the Allres softened up the marnland for the eventual push across the Channel and at the same tIme garned precIous tIme to muster all the men and machlnes ever assembled Into one powerful unrt Harassed by at tween the Atlantlc Wall and the ever wrdenlng Russran front On June 4 1944 the world recerved the news that Rome the caprtal of Italy fell Into the hands of the Allres and local Interest was drawn to the fact that Lreutenant Fred Drucken mrller who was later kIlled In actron north of Rome drove the fIrst tank to enter the cIty Two days later General EIsenhower gave the long awaIted command for Invasron thIs electrrfymg order sent the largest armada In hrstory agalnst NOZI dornrnated Europe when the Allred forces landed In Normandy Immedrately establIshIng a beach head on the coast The natron anxrously awaIted some word of the InvasIon and was led In prayer by the Presrdent Declarrng that all movements had progressed ahead of schedule the Allred command had soon securely won bases on the contrnent As the battle drove on over the Normandy penrn sula and out Into open country where more suppIIes could be stored the drIve garned momen tum and the Germans began retreatrng to the Fatherland Leavrng the European InvasIon In full advance the news spotlIght returned agarn to the POCllIC where on October 19 1944 General Douglas MacArthur began hrs return to the Phrl Ipprnes wrth grgantrc landIng equrpment that went ashore under protectran of a mercrless naval bombardment The day of lrberatron for the POClfIC came nearer On November 19 the Allres began pourrng over the German border as they started actual ccntact wIth the famous Sergfrued lIne In Western Germany Tokro got Its fIrst nIght raId on November 29 when Srapan based B 29s plastered the Nrppon caprtal On December 17 the Nazrs surprrsed the world wIth a grgantrc counter attack that sent the Allres reellng back across snow covered Belgrurn and France ThIs drIve upset Allred plans consrderably although 1944 ended Wlfh the Allles once more on the march As a result 0 thIs counter attack the A lIes supplres were depleted and the natran was urged to work On February 19 the Marrnes Invaded the Island of Iwo JIma rIght Into the very defenses of the Jap home and lt was the bloodrest battle In Marrne hrstary The crawnrng moment came when a band of Leathernecks planted therr flag on Iwo JIma s Mount Surabachr All 'hrs trrne the Al res neared the Rhrne Frrst fell Cologne then Coblenz and frnally the forces of General EIsenhower crossed the Rhrne at Remagen Here the Germans offered lrght opposrtron although they dId destroy the Ludendorff Brrdge at Remagen The frnal all out
