There not doubt that high school is a time for firsts. It aD starts with the first day of school for sophomores. Ah yes. I'm sure we all remember dashing through the halls, searching frantically for the health room, trying to Ignore the seniors' claims that It is up by the pool. On the first day of school, sophomores have their first encounter with the cafeteria. During this thirty minute period, sophs become confused, befuddled, and generally aggravated by the Intricate workings of the various lunch lines. They spend twenty minutes each day trying to figure out which line will bring them to which food. Unfortunately, the truth is that none of the upper class persons have figured It out either, they just stopped trying. After the first day of school, normal life at WHS begins, but that is not the end of the firsts. WHS was led through this year of firsts by our first lady. Muffy Spalla. whose spirit fired up the entire school for Homecoming. This set the tone for the rest of the year. First place, for instance, seemed to be popular with Trojan athletes this year. Speaking of which, this was the first year in many that the juniors triumphed over the seniors In an incredible Powder Puff game. Some of the spectators may have been lucky enough to be asked out to the Homecoming dance for the first dates. This is a moment teens look forward to because they remember seeing Greg take out some groovy chick on the Brady Bunch. Unfortunately, for most students, when this great event comes to pass, it doesn't quite live up to their expectations. Several of the students that we spoke to described their first dates with words like boring, uncomfortable, and awkward. but still kind of exciting. On this adventure, some students may have been lucky enough to avoid driving mom's station wagon and instead drove their first car. Who cares If it has a fair amount of rust and only an AM radloll Yes. it runs, and no. It's not mom'sll These are the characteristics that give it the value of a Rolls Royce. After the weekend of first dates, first kisses, and first times for missing curfew, school reconvenes with first hour. No one can say a whole lot about first hour because, for the most part, the average student Is In a semi-conscious state. However, one fact on which most WHS students agree, is that first hour is the worst time to have to do one's first oral presentation. The first oral is really the most nerve-racking experience of high school. It is when most students find out first hand what Is meant by knocking kneesl w lee leiblg and Heather Knapp on their “first date.' Firsts, Firsts, Firsts, Muffy Spalla Is our First lady. Wayxata's own Lesley Treptow running in first place. 4 Some WHS students during first lunch.

let's hear It for the fint sophomore floatl Could this bo their ''first kiss? Sean Merkel and Andrea Phillip High school Is made special by these and many other firsts. They provide excitement and variation to some days that could Just be another day at school. Although many of these firsts are common to all students, they all take a unique shape In the lives of different students. They are the memories that are treasured for many years after high school. This is probably because from these firsts, we educate ourselves so that we may improve when the seconds” come around. The second date seems easlen the second oral seems more polished, as does the second car, the second day at WHS is an improvement on the first: and finally, second hour is more lively than first hour. These improvements can be almost as exciting as the firsts, but not quite as fun. Students experiencing athletic, academic, and artistic firsts are the foundation on which WHS is built.
