Sue! Jay Zielske Come live with me and he my charm And we will live upon a farm Down south of here in Ioway And we will have a field of hay. Storm Lake is where we’ll live our lives And believe me you. this ain’t no jive. I’ll build for you a house of bricks Down in Ioway out in the sticks. And I will make thee a bed of hay In which for you to lay And we will watch Buena Vista play On almost every Saturday. The Lake Conference was exceptionally strong hosting some of the best teams in the state. Even though our season record was 10-10, Wayzata gave every team good competition. The scores were close throughout the season with the team showing improvement at every practice and game. This years team had an excellent offense-serving, setting and spiking. Connie Fortin, (All-Conference Player) was our stable setter and most consistent server (only missing two serves all sea- son). Co-captains, Rhoda Lint and Lori Semen kept us in every game with their hard spikes, all around ability and knowledge of the game. Sophomore setter. Stacy Martin, earned her letter this year (only the second time in the schools volleyball history). Every player was important and valuable in the team's success. Two exciting and unforget-able moments were- Playing a close match with former state champions Minnetonka (10-18, 17-19) and beating fifth rated Kennedy in the first round of the Regional Tournament. Within the next two years, Wayzata should be back on top. This years J.V. team lost only 5 matches and the B-Squad only lost 1. Next year we have three returning letter winners (Karen Ye, Stacy Martin. Cathy Johnson) and many other talented and enthusiastic players. 149 JUNIOR VARSITY WINS 11- LOSSES 5 JUNIOR VARSITY TOP L.-R. She was the region winner and she set a new record at this meet. She also went on to win the state championships which were held at Cook Hall on the University of Minnesota campus. Jane set a new state record in the 100 backstroke and also set a new womens record at Cook Hall. Other participants at the state meet were Kim Garvey, Cindee Schmalz and Carolyn Meyer who competed in the 400 yard freestyle relay. As a whole, the team had a great season finale at the Region XI meet, with everyone trimming seconds off their best times. After qualifying on Thursday the girls came back on Friday and improved their times once again. Wayzata finished fourth in the region, defeating Edina East by one point. The seniors, alias “Over the hill gang,” that lead the team to its winning traditions were. Sue Meyer, Laura McKinney, Cindy Jorgensen, Jean VVinzen-burg, Linda Brazel, Terri Foster, Lucy Hartwell, Betsy Eid, Kathy Brazel, Beth Ryshavy, Linda Roal and Dawn Prekker. These girls will be missed, but they have left their mark on swimming in Wayzata. The prospect of success in the future looks good with a strong group of returning swimmers and divers coming back next year. -Dan Zrust LINDA BRAZEL LEADS DIVERS TO STATE Wayzata’s diving team has seen an incredible improvement over the last three years. The girls have grown from an inexperienced squad to a state qualifying, talented group of girls. This year Linda Brazel. a senior, was the region XI champion. She also went on to compete at the state championships where she finished. Linda has only been diving for 3 years and so this is a remarkable achievement. Terri Foster and Lucy Hartwell, seniors, also showed marked improvement this year. Both of t hese girls were top competitors at the regional meet. Jody Hunt, a sophomore, will be the only remaining member of the varsity squad next year. However, there are many talented divers from the junior high programs, and future success looks good. Lucy Hartwell gave this description of her final diving season- Diving brings to mind: Hard work (physically and mentally), early mornings on the tramp ... the evil belt ... exercises ... frustration and fear ... tremendous accomplishments ... competitive meets ... gracefullness ... dedication ... cookie bumps . . “fun” parties ... team spirit dear friends . laughs . . . terrific memories ... VARSITY HAS TOUGH SEASON The past basketball season will not be remembered for the number of victories attained, but rather for the learning experience of all those involved. While in this, a rebuilding year for the team, the players did not experience the pleasure of winning, the simple joy of competing was felt by all. Each individual always played hard through the last day of the season. The success this team experienced was not in winning but in knowing they tried. They can be proud that they never quit and never made excuses, when it would have been very easy to do so. Stacy Martin, Darlene Boettcher Competition is a way of life. No athlete wins every match or every game. No athlete plays well every day or with complete confidence every time. No athlete is proud of every performance, either physically or mentally. No athlete has complete control every minute of every day. But the athlete does know the different between having played well and having played poorly. The athlete knows when the mental, physical, and emotional have been integrated, or when one part of the individual has been unable to adapt to the stress. The athlete knows the difference between play that is fair and unfair. He or she knows the difference between being strong or weak. Competition prepared or unprepared, skilled or unskilled. The athlete knows the price of excellence, the worth of pain, the desirability of joy and the seifs ability to achieve. Competition is not all good or bad -but to the athlete it requires a total commitment. Such commitment offers the committed a chance to gain more than by a non-committed life. To learn to compete well is to learn to live well, for not only is competition a way of life - it is life. Only those who dare to accept the bad with the good, the work with the fun, the sorrow with the happiness, and the defeats with the victories, will ever achieve or accomplish much in the sports world. We improved so much that I'm already thinking snow and am excited for the 1978-79 competitive skiing season. The girls skiing team posted an excellent 4-2 first year record with the losses going to Eisenhower and Kobbinsdale. Wayzata later defeated Robhinsdale in Regionals placing 8 out of 16 teams. The top performer for the girls was junior Captain Rae Hoisvc. Rae certainly was the hardest worker on the team. She put in many extra miles after practice which, along with her determination, gave her 13th place at Regionals. I'd rate her chances of going to state next year as excellent. Rae skied in the number one position all season. The number 2 skier was sophomore Suzanne Morse: number 3. sophomore Debi Dannert: number 4. sophomore Peg Blodgett; and number 5. sophomore Alice Brebner. Also skiing varsity during the season were sophomores Sue Frank. Kappy Wilkes. Kris Moe. Karen Moore, Ayo Degnegri and Suzanne Klick. With such a young team 1 look for the girls to improve their Regional ranking and Conference record. All the girls nave tremendous attitudes and all certainly have the ability to be top skiiers. The boys team will be much improved next year. We will certainly pick up more points and improve on our record. Showing considerable improvement this year were Scott I ven. Eric Bloedel.
