CLASS I-IISTCRY As we donned our caps and gowns on the night of Iune 10, 1954, and the first strains of Pomp and Circumstance were heard, many treasured memories of our past high school years came to mind. One in particular was the feeling of bewilderment we experienced as we entered our tirst year of high school, but after a few weeks we became accustomed to the studies and activities of the upperclassmen. VVe eagerly looked forward to our sophomore year and the completion of our modern high school building. Wliile sophomores we progressed through the new halls of advanced learning combined with participation in various activities. Wfith the production of two plays, much hidden talent was discovered. The energetic sophomore girls captured the intramural basketball trophy while the sophomore boys hclpcd to gain the coveted football champ- ionship. VV ith both quality and quantity, we, as juniors, began planning for our Iunior Class Play, The Little Dog Laugh- edf' which was a tremendous help, as was our successful magazine sale, in making our Iunior-Senior Prom the climax of another exciting year. Another unforgettable highlight was the receiving of our class rings. We, the seniors of '54 began our activities for the coming year under the unselhsh guidance of our new priu- cipal and experienced faculty. The all important events during our senior year were Homecoming . . . Christmas Dance . . . Snow Week . . . Senior Class Play . . . Variety Show. VVe now bid farewell to our fellow classmates and wish to thank the administration and faculty for aiding us in our years of study. As we walk down the aisle on graduation night to re- ceive our diplomas, we realize the importance and serious- ness of life and the responsibilities in becoming outstanding citizens of our community, state, and nation. This friendly bunch was led by four ofli- cers-presiclent, George Batsong vice-president, Ianice McCollum, secretary, Meryl lohantgeng and treasurer, Susan Freeman. Interest in school affairs guided many of the juniors' activities. They sponsored a very successful after-game dance which netted 3520, a helpful addition to the sparse treasury. It was the idea of three junior girls that led to the organization of the Nurses' Aide Club. The annual magazine sale, undertaken to raise necessary funds for another very important animal affair, the Iunior-Senior Prom, was held in October and again increased the bank funds. IUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS I. McCollum, vice president, M. lohant- gen, secretary, S. Freeman, treasurer. Not pictured, C. Batson, president. About this time the class was approached by Mrs. Smith and the cast was chosen for their first big play. The play selected was Down to Earth, an extremely humorous story about three angels who came to earth in order to take back to heaven two earth folks . Iostens brought out their se- lect stock of rings and after several days of dis- cussion, the class picked, by popular vote, the ring of its choice. Now it was time to make concrete plans for the prom. Committees were formed and began to meet and form ideas for bands, dance programs and a hotel ballroom. Other necessary committees were, decorating, seating, chaperones, Master of Ceremonies, and invitations. VVhen all the committees had something tangible to re- Top Row: J. Frantz, B. Carmichiel, T. These are some of the activities in which the whole class participated. Other activities in ' which individual juniors took part were the Swing Band, the Senior High Band, the Senior Chorus and any one of the many clubs which were form- ed. In the sports Held, both the junior boys' and girl's basketball teams showed exceptional talent. The junior boys were defeated by the seniors in a lieartbreaker, and the girls went to the Hnals where they were beaten by the seniors in another enjoyable game. STUDENT COUNCIL This years Student Council has done a tre- mendous job in furthering student activities. Under the guidance of lim Morris, first semester president, Homecoming was undertaken. The parade and bonfire on Thursday evening and the gaine and dance on Friday proved to be very successful. Another project started by the Council was furnishing the activity room. A new constitution was drawn up this year, One of the more impor- tant changes was that council ineinbers should be elected for one year instead of a semester. jerry Carling, second semester president, or- ganized Snow Veek. Sleigh rides, skating parties, tohoganning, and dances were just a few of the activities. The year was cliinaxed with the Variety Show, an all-student production, which was an outstand- ing success. A new Lake Conference Council was started this year and Wayzata's representatives were Na- dyne Schiebe and Kay Sharratt, both seniors. Mr. VVilley, our principal, advised the Council in their many activities of the year. Student Council Presidents - First and Second Semester - Jim Morris, Mr. Willey, Jerry Carling. However, they are looking forward to a better season next year since the whole team will be returning. Most of the season, one junior and seven soph- omores carried the load for coach Art Chiodo. Bill Dickey was thc junior, while the sophomores were Ion Rieke, Douglas I-Iill, Ralph Strom, lim Iacobson, Richard VVillis, lim Forde, and lack Doran. Little Jake sinks one -Jim Jacobson Page Eighty-F our One of the outstanding qualities of the boys was that they refused to give up on any game even thou h they were sometimes far behind. This was shown in the heartbreaking game with Robbinsdale in which the Robins won 55-52 in an overtime period. Dave Bambenek and Bill Dickey were high point men with 12 and 1U points respectively. However, they were finally able to defeat Park in the finale of the re- gionals as Larry Faddcn scored the tie-breaking goal with Z6 seconds remaining in the second overtime period. BASEBALL The Lake Conference Championship again fell into the hands of the Trojan nine as VVayzata and Edina tied for the title. The 1953 season saw the Trojans, under the coaching of George Anderson roll up an impres- sive 8 game winning streak, before falling to a strong Hopkins team. This was the first time VVayzata had been beaten by Hopkins in seven years. ln order to gain the right to the district finals the Trojans dumped Shakopee 11-0 with Bill Adams smashing out two doubles to spark the Trojan's victory. However in the Hnal game, VValters bested Shaver in a pitching duel as Edina won Z-l. Robbinsdale was defeated 4-2 in the first gamc of the season with Shaver allowing only four hits. Floyd Bouley rapped out a triple and two clou- bles as Shaver homered, snowing under Blake 168 George Anderson, Keith Schafer, Larry Fadden Page Ninety -,N Keith Schafer, catcher: .Larry Fadden, pitcher lake me ani' aulffz Me V , Keith Schafer, Butch Erickson Dick Shaver appeared on lack Horner's TV show as a result of pitching a no hit 4-0 game against Minnetonka. Watertown fell to the Trojans 10-2 with Larry Fadclen and Butch Erickson holding the 01313011- ents to only three hits. A home run and a bunt by Shaver were the deciding factors in a 2-0 win over Edina. In another tough conference game deciding hits by Bouley and Keith Schafer proved the way for a 3-0 win over Park as Shaver gave up only two hits. Schafer and Bouley both batting four for four set the pace for a Z0-0 win, with Fadden and Erickson limiting the nine from Bloomington to only two hits. ln the following game two out- standing players, Blair Fildes and Ivan Zastrow Gerry Carling J. on .,.: e:s ft2 rr -. The only returning letter- inen were Tom Stano, Les Iohantgcn, Bob Kreatz, and Ierry Baker. Even though the l953 track squad lacked ex- perienced uCll'lClCl'lllCl'lH they were still able to place fourth in the district meet. Bob Kreatz grabbed a iirst place in the pole vault, while Tom Stano and Gene Bouley placed second and third, in the broad jump. One of Coach Bud Crowningshield's stars last year was Gene Bouley, who was originally on the baseball team, but was injured at the beginning of the season. Since he was unable to continue playing baseball, he joined the track team where his participation meant the addition of many deciding points in the district meets. The prospects this season are high, as many veterans have returned from last year. Tom Stano. Allen Sperry A Page N inety-Two Dave Quay, pole vaulting we gain pawn amd Milf. Dave Winnen, broad jumping GOLF VVayzata's golf team had a vastly improved season over their previous year as they wound up the 1953 season with a four win, four loss record. The Trojan golfers undcr the coaching of Duane Bittlc didn't get on the winning side until the season was half gone. In the final four games of the year the Trojans beat Bloomington twice by the consecutive scores of l2Ma-SW and CDM-SV2. 'lhey also defeated the two strong conference teams, Rohbinsdale, by the score of lZVz-5Vz, and Park by the score of 926-SW. Graduation took its toll of last year's golfers, they included Tom Quay, Frank Morris, Iohn Ienkins, Ray Ostlund and Ray Peters. Returning this year are Tom Tart, Dick Burr, and lim Morris.
