It is our main winter sport and some say it excels our fall sport, football. This year Bob Elliott again coached our Trojans. The team was made up of ten equally strong men and they were ably led by our popular captain. Bill Kingman. The team was honored at the end of the season by having its tall center. Tom Traff. named on the all-conference squad. which is made up of the outstanding boys in the confer- ence chosen by the Lake Conference coaches. I don't imagine our wrestling is much different from the wrestling in your time except that it is not quite as rough. M. G. Gullixson coaches wrestling at Wayzata and he has been doing a fine job. Tom Lebo was the able captain of the gi'applers this year even though he was unable to finish out the season be- cause of Doctors orders. The squad, this year, was rather inexperienced but very game. Although the team last eight of its dual matches while winning five, these matches Were against such tough opponents as Anoka. Robbinsdale. Mound. and Litehfield. Wayzata placed third in the Dis- ti'iet Wrestling meet at Mound. with Jack Soderholm and Bill Baer winning individual titles at 1:34 and 1-15 re- soeetively. The locals were able to cup fourth place in the Regional at Robbinsdale. although Jack Sodei'holm was G. Raiser comes through with a pin '1 hirty-twu the only one to win a place on the Region Team that went to the State Tournament. Among the highlights of this year's mat season were Greg Reisei s win over last years state champ. Westlund of Anoka. and Ralph Moore's conquest of Hunt of Univer- sity High in the District Meet. Wayzata's prospects fur a successful season next year are bright. With the return of many undei'elassmen the squad should be quite powerful. CHRISTMAS PLAY The celebration of one of your winter festivals came, Hector, with a contest in which the new works of well- known poets were presented. Our Christmas play, Venite Adoremus. by Victor Stai'buck. Gayle Erickson was the stage manager and Anne Ci'owningshield was assistant director of the play. The play was introduced by Shirley Erickson: it told the story of a little girl of the twentieth century, You tplayed by Marcy O'Connoi'i. who falls asleep after helping her mother tMary Leueri decorate their home for Christ- mas. She awakes wandering into a strange land, and finds three shephei'dseEzra. Simeon. and Josias tDaryl Hehl. Roger Pape, and Jim Van Dykei who have seen a strange star in the heavens. They are wondering about it when three wise men Caspar. Melchoir. and Baltazar tTom Lebo, Duane Sorenson. and Jerry Engsethi-eome upon them to report that they are on their way to worship Israel's King. over whom the star gleams. The shepherds leave, with ttYou. to worship at the manger. The picture changes to an inn in Bethlehem. where the innkeeper tBob Reai is counting his gold. His servant boy. Dick Street- eri comes to tell him of a man and his wife. here for the D. Hehl, R. Pape, D. Van Dyke census taking. who wish lodging for the night. He can- not give them room, but his daughter tPat Andersom in- tei'cedes and the couple are sent to astable to pass the night. The shepherds. wise men, and ttYouit arrive, search- ing for the new Christ. and shortly after, two Roman soldiers tJim Grady and Tom Bi'ennai burst into the inn, also looking for the new born King. The innkeeper denies knowledge of His birth. but the soldiers see and seize the man's gold. They are interrupted by Julius, a Roman officer. tplayed by Dick Meyeri. His mission, he says, is to slay the Child and he states that he means to do so. The setting for the last scene of the play was the Nativity. Here. before Mary. tPeggy Reedi. Joseph tJohn Brennai, three angels tRomana Neiss, Arlyn Nelson, and Ingred Kelleyi. and the Christ-Child. each person brings his gift to lay at His feet with his heart and faith. Me BASEBALL Let's go over to the baseball diamond, Hector, and see how the sport of baseball fares in Wayzata. Baseball is a compai'itively new sport in the school being started in 1940. George Anderson, the present coach of baseball, has been coaching this sport since. Last year the squad came through to gain the Co-Championship with Robbinsdale. Although this was the first title, Wayzata has been runner- up almost every year during the season. Not only being Co-Champions of the Conference last year. the team copped runner-up honors in the tournament at Carleton College. In this Tourney the squad played five games in one day M. Edholm, R. Don. a Junior this year, who played shortstop and was undorstudy to Dave Koch as pitcher last year. is Coach Anderson's main cog in his baseball machine this year. I would like to introduce to you. Dave Koch. one of the greatest athletes over to attend Wayzata High School. Dave. often called Buck. graduated last year with thirteen letters. Those letters included five for baseball and four apiece for football and basketball. Buck was selected on the A11 Lake Conference teams in football and basketball twu years in a row and then in his Senior year he received the high honor of being placed on the All State Football Team. His positions played wore fullback on the football team and pitcher on the baseball team. Dave also led VVayzata's Legion baseball team to two successive berths in the State Tournament in 1946 and 1947. Besides being an out- standing athlete. TRACK Hector, this sport attained its glory in your ancient Greece. Although some of these events may look new to you, the sport still is basically running, jumping, and throwing. During the past few years more boys have shown an interest in the sport. Last year a little band of six track- sters. under the coaching of ttBud Crowningshield, came home with a fourth place captured at the Carleton Track meet. The track team last year was composed of Jim Van Dyke and John Koestei' running the dashes. Sixty-six 62.435 PROPHECY Living in this modern age of atomic energy, scien- tific advancement, higher prices and lower hemlines, we shall, with the help of our seeing eye television set, look into the future to see what roles our classmates will be playing in this supersonic era. First our seeing eye takes us to what seems to be a great newspaper office. Ah, yes, it is the Minneapolis Star. Well, what do you knowethere's Dick Bartholow, the Editor, sitting in his private office with his secre- tary, Audrey Wanngren, perched on his knee. In bursts Wesley Budenski, creator of the popular comic strip uCannibal King, shocking everyone with his newest pickled-head. In the outer office we find Wally Olson, photographer, leaving for Chicago with the chief re- porter, Ingred Kelley, to interview the manager of the Chicago Cubs. Billy Baer, and two of his star players, Tom Loaney and Russell Bouley. Looking again we see Clyde Holter on an MGM movie set, shooting a scene from Pat Anderson's latest movie, uThe Perils of Patty. In the cutting room we see a sports newsreel preview, in which we see three of our famed classmates-Lucia Patch, winner of the 100 meter free style Olympics Championship; proewrestlers uGorgeous George Getten and Madman Campbell grappling for the paper weight title, with referee, Doug Sorenson; and Joan Peterson in a review of her spec- tacular Ice Follies routine. Our seeing eye now takes us to New York, where appears a billboard advertising the great vaudeville team of Lebo and Van Dyke. Medea, starring Mary Agnes Leuer, is the featured attraction at the 48th Street Theater. Another celebrity, who is appearing in a con- cert at Carnegie Hall, is Lorna Maxwell, the world re- nowned pianist. On Fifth Avenue we see Marion's Petite Salon, owned by Marion Schiebe, Importer- New York, Paris, Medicine Lake. Within the same salon is the exclusive hat bar of Marilyn McGillvray, and the beautiful Blue Room where is employed the chic Conover model. Judy Canterbury. Next we visit the New York World's Fair where we hear Ruth Ger- ber, barker for the greatest attraction on the Midway, uTwo Ton Collins. Our telescopic eye now takes us into the National Gallery of Art in Washington. D. C.. where we see, sitting at the information desk. Janet Westling. A guide, Beverly Dusoski, is directing patrons to the exhibition of the works of the well known sculptress, Sally Borsheim, and the murals of Thomas Erickson, which hang on the walls of the gallery. Our second look at Washington gives us a picture of the political activities of several of our classmates. Gayle Erickson, first woman ambassador to Argentina, is boarding a plane which will carry her to her posi- tion. Here. also, we get a glimpse of Anne Crowning- shield. the G. O. P. Presidential nominee, practicing the song uDonkey Serenade, in hopes of defeating her op- ponent. who is an accomplished player of the ttMissouri Waltz. Senators Richard Meyer and William Kingman, with portfolios in hand, are mounting the steps of the Capitol. Turning the dial. our seeing eye takes us to Cali- fornia. where we find playboy Zoot-Suit Dacey at the Santa Anita Race Track, betting on Dixie Ricesi swift-footed horse, Sad Sack. On Copocabana Beach we see the vacationing businessmen, Cliff Brandenburg, Bill Neff, and Elroy Meyer. Racing across the sand are Jim Grady and his track team. Looking inside the night club, we see Daryl Hehl's band of the year, the uBe.Bops. with trumpeter Bertram Anderson, and vo- calist uTorchy Znerold. Prancing onto the stage are Bubbles Snyder and Feathers Leroux, chorus girls, in a number starring the popular adagio dancer, Harold Lysne. Again we look through the seeing eye and see Shir- ley Albers doing the hula-hula on the Beach of Waikiki, with her dancing instructor, Alice Faber. Under a palm tree lies Marlowe Anderson working on his latest book, How To Stay Young and Irresistible. Changing stations, the seeing eye catches the take- off of the rocket to the moon. Inside we see co-pilots Loren Schiebe and Reg Kroskin, stewardess Beverly Thomson and passengers: J erry Engseth, manager of the Pepsodent Company's branch office on the moon; Jack Jakupcaik, carrying the blueprint for his new sky- scraper; and Gilbert Lillemo, manager of the Elite Shoe Shine Stand. Upon returning to earthly things our seeing-eye turns to the North woods, where we see lumberjacks, Roy Ice, Bill Koski and Jim Countrymen, being served supper by their faithful cook and bottle washer Beaver Larson. A little further back in the woods we see the Bachelorls Colony and three of its active citizens, Dick Vanman, Harlan Johnson, and Eugene Stumpf. The eye now switches to Alaska where we find Greg Reiser. wealthy salmon fisherman. George Kreatz, deeo-sea diver. and fur trapper, Tom Traff seated at a table in ttHollisi Hosoitality House. They are lunch- ing with the visiting dude ranchers Bob Decker and Bob Jenson with the soft piano of Marilyn Corinne Peter- son softly heard in the background. Turning our telescopic eve to Minneapolis we glance into the tiMitchell House of Beauty where Delloro. the busy proprietress. is checking on the progress of Jane Brockway's new wave: while in the waiting room Ar- letta Albers orotects her greeting card counter from James four little Indians until Margaret Day comes to shuffle them off to the ttDay nursery. Also in the room we see JoAnne Mangen waiting for her appointment with Marlene Johnson and Lois Johnson. Swedish mas- seurs. In another room of the salon sits Nancy Was- gatt. instructor at Wasgatt's Charm School For Frus- trated Females. who is having her hair styled by Eloise Anderson, and her nails manicured by Rosemary Riley. Leaving the salon we move to the University cam- pus where in Northrup Auditorium sit the Professor of Mathematics. Duane Sorenson and Psychiatrist Dave Rosekrans listening to a rehearsal of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra under the direction of its promi- nent conductor, Dwight Thompson. The scene changes to the office of the president of the Whiskers-off Razor Company, Bob Rea, who is dic- tating a letter to his efficient secretary, Rita Strybicki. Two other employees are Gerald Fortin, bookkeeper and accountant for the firm, and Charlene Stevens, switch- board operator. We next follow our supersonic eye to Perry's Ser- vice Station where we find Mary Heno tuned into the sports broadcast. Barbara Swanson, commentator, is announcing the awards made to the players of the All- Star Baseball team-Arlene Raskob, Romona Schmidt, Rosemary Reiser, Mary Lou Donahue and Marion Dy- koif. Last of all our seeing eye takes us to a less cheerful scene, a cemetery where the undertaker, Glen Grave, and his right hand man. Duane Hughes are dusting off the inscription on the tombstone of two of their fellow classmates.
