Had an Outstanding Year Winners. r ■» Sandy DeVilbrss Mrke8impson K 9tate Farmers Three youths from Waynoka were among Oklahoma’s top Future Farmers of America. These students are Sandy DeVilbiss. Darin Clapper, and Mike Simpson. These FFA members are the top graduating seniors studying vocational agriculture in Oklahoma's high schools. They represent the top three percent of Oklahoma's FFA membership, who are eligible to receive the state’s highest degree. Sandy. Darin, and Mike were judged on their vocational agriculture projects, FFA activities, leadership, community and school activities. This year’s group brings the total to 13.918 Oklahoma Future Farmers of America who have received the degree since the First charms were granted in 1928. FFA is a youth organization for students who are enrolled in voca- tional agriculture classes and who are pursuing a career in some Field of agriculture. The Annual Staff and the Waynoka school are proud of these three students accomplishments and would like to dedicate this years annual to them along with Waynoka's other state champions. Fronfc Robert Curiis. Brenda Olson. Back: Brian Olson, Anjie Pepper, and Raven Curlie. 9tate History Day Winners Waynoka's State Championship History Day team traveled to Washington, D.C. to compete in na- tional History Day competition dur- ing June. On April 12 the team of Robert Curliss, Raven Curliss, Ana Ramirez. Brenda Olson, and Brian Olson received a superior rating at the District History Day held at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. The History Day team had a change in cast before the state competition. Ana would be unable to attend national competition if the team placed first at state, therefore, she was replaced by Anjie Pepper. The team performed an original musical play, “The Donner Party Tragedy.’’ Students' projects for History Day are selected in accordance with a nationally selected theme. This year's theme, Triumphs and Tragedies, was selected by a na- tional committee. At the state capitol on May 10 the team from Waynoka placed First. There were no separate divisions for schools of different sizes so the Waynoka team competed against schools of much larger enrollments. They received a superior rating scoring 98 3 points out of a possi- ble 100. The play is about a pioneer group, the Donner Party, enroute from Illinois to California. They took an untested shortcut and were stranded in blizzards on the back side of the Sierra Mountains. Having no food and nearing starvation the desperate survivors turned to can- nabalism. The Donner Party holds rts place in history by showing the will of man to survive st any cost. The Annual Staff would like to wish them good luck and dedicate this year's annual to them along with Waynoka's other state champions.
