Natalie was on the winning 400 and 1600 meter relay teams and Ana was on the 800 and 1600 relay teams. Oina Nutter also went to the state meet 8S an alternate for the team. The relay team of Mindy Zook, Stephanie Lenhart. Tippe Kephart. and Sherri Zook did not place at the state meet, but did however set a new school record. Seven more school records were set by the girls this season. Lori Sutherland in the 200 meter dash. Natalie Brown in the 400 meter dash, Shannon Miller in the 100 meter hurdles and long jump, Dana Smiley in the 300 meter hurdles, and the 400 meter relay team and 1600 meter relay team also set new school records. The Waynoka School now has five high school All-8taters. They are Dana Smiley. Shannon Miller. Natalie Brown, Ana Ramirez, and Lori Sutherland. The track team participated this year in nine meets, bringing home four runner-up trophies and five championship trophies. The remain- ing member of the track team, Jen- nifer Bixler. was unable to attend the state track meet. The Annual Staff would like to congratulate these girls and dedicate this years annual to them along with Waynoka's other state champions. Had an Outstanding Year Winners. r ■ Sandy DeVilbrss Mrke8impson K 9tate Farmers Three youths from Waynoka were among Oklahoma’s top Future Farmers of America. These students are Sandy DeVilbiss. Darin Clapper, and Mike Simpson. These FFA members are the top graduating seniors studying vocational agriculture in Oklahoma's high schools. They represent the top three percent of Oklahoma's FFA membership, who are eligible to receive the state’s highest degree. Sandy. Darin, and Mike were judged on their vocational agriculture projects, FFA activities, leadership, community and school activities. This year’s group brings the total to 13.918 Oklahoma Future Farmers of America who have received the degree since the First charms were granted in 1928. FFA is a youth organization for students who are enrolled in voca- tional agriculture classes and who are pursuing a career in some Field of agriculture. The Annual Staff and the Waynoka school are proud of these three students accomplishments and would like to dedicate this years annual to them along with Waynoka's other state champions. Fronfc Robert Curiis. Brenda Olson. Back: Brian Olson, Anjie Pepper, and Raven Curlie. 9tate History Day Winners Waynoka's State Championship History Day team traveled to Washington, D.C. to compete in na- tional History Day competition dur- ing June. On April 12 the team of Robert Curliss, Raven Curliss, Ana Ramirez. Brenda Olson, and Brian Olson received a superior rating at the District History Day held at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. The History Day team had a change in cast before the state competition. Ana would be unable to attend national competition if the team placed first at state, therefore, she was replaced by Anjie Pepper. The team performed an original musical play, “The Donner Party Tragedy.’’ Students' projects for History Day are selected in accordance with a nationally selected theme. This year's theme, Triumphs and Tragedies, was selected by a na- tional committee. At the state capitol on May 10 the team from Waynoka placed First. There were no separate divisions for schools of different sizes so the Waynoka team competed against schools of much larger enrollments. They received a superior rating scoring 98 3 points out of a possi- ble 100. The play is about a pioneer group, the Donner Party, enroute from Illinois to California. They took an untested shortcut and were stranded in blizzards on the back side of the Sierra Mountains. Having no food and nearing starvation the desperate survivors turned to can- nabalism. The Donner Party holds rts place in history by showing the will of man to survive st any cost. The Annual Staff would like to wish them good luck and dedicate this year's annual to them along with Waynoka's other state champions. Parents Visit School Open House is a time for parents to see whst their children have been doing in school. It is held in conjunction with National Education week. Parents spent the evening visiting the grade school, junior high, and high school. A program followed the visitation period. For the entertainment this year, the First, sec- ond, and third grades presented a Cowboy Jam- boree musical program under the direction of Mrs. Norene Barker. The fourth and fifth graders sang Spanish songs they had learned from their Spanish lessons which were taught by Marco Ramirez and Scott Bence. Students ask Mrs. Bliss. AH teacher, questions. 45 Among the Spanish Clubs many activities, were preparing and eating a Spanish meal monthly, teaching Spanish to grade students and singing Christmas caroles at Christmas. Scott Bence and Marco Ramirez spent time each week teaching Spanish to the fourth and fifth grade students. At Open House and the Christmas Program these grade students then performed by singing several songs. At Christmas time the Spanish Club and Spanish classes walked through the halls and sang Christmas caroles to the students in other classes. On the final day of school at the Awards Assembly. The outbreak couldn't have come at a worse time with Spring stock shows beginning all over the state. Students having hogs had to sell them for slaughter and were unable to show the hogs. The disease is not always fatal to hogs but is to other farm animals if they contact it. Money that had been collected for prizes was divided among the hog showers.
