RAILS The crowning glory of Waynoka is her basketball team. This group of fine sports- men and excellent ballplayers consists of: Marvin Miller, John Hanan, Larry Miller, Chris Olson, Kermit Chriswell, Garry Pierce, Bob Steinle, Gary Case, Darral Inman, Floyd Lamke, Tom Fisher, Gary Hulsey, Larry Hulsey, Coach Bob Fanning and Manager, Jere Lenhart. The team has an outstanding record for this year and great prospects for the future. The annual staff wishes to congratulate the boys and their coach on a sport well played! Right Here Tom! Gary Case is calling for the ball in one of the scrimmage games that keep the railroaders on their toes. TEAM ROSTER, Front Row: Dixie Barker, Charlette Long, Arlene Sampson, Dody Whitney, Lea Ann Hodges, Marilyn Bird, Marisha Kaczor, Betty Moore, Waynona Trantham. Back Row: Carolyn Bixler, Trudy Snyder, Coach Huffman, Lorna DeVilbiss, Shirley Severe. HIGH SCHOOL The girls basketball team started the season with a group of enthusiastic girls. In the weeks that followed the girls pro- gressed quite rapidly in the fundamentals of basketball. The offense and defense developed more slowly, because its im- perative that these two phases of basket- ball be developed as a unit where the group thinks as one. Due to the team's inability of being a consistent outside shooting team, they found winning a bit difficult, but we would have to say that the girls were a dedicated team and have played inspired basketball, they have gained the experience that is so necessary for a great team FAREWELL SENIORS This year we loose four players from our team. They are Waynona Trantham, forward; Charlette Long, guard; Shirley Severe, guard; and Arlene Sampson, for- ward. Arlene was the captain. We will truly miss these girls next year. RAILETTES The great competition that the Fresh- man girls have given to the basketball team has shown that they will be the fu- ture backbone of Waynoka High School Railettes. The Freshman girls have been giving the high school girls some competition as shown in the pictures at the right. In the first picture is highschool guard Lea Ann Hodges Jr. high forward Reva Camp after a rebound. In the second picture is Betty Moore high- school forward shooting a jump-shot with LornaDeVilbiss Cecilia Rawson looking on. In the third picture is highschool guard, Trudy Snyder, trying to block a shot with Sheryl Robertson Coach Huffman look- ing on. In the fourth picture we change ends so that high school, guards highschool. In this picture Betty Moore breaks in for set- up and Charlette Long trys to stop her. In the background is forward Nona Trant- ham and guard Shirley Severe. The junior high girls basically have learned the fundamentals of basketball which are of the utmost importances in becoming a good basketball player. The girls have played a few games but, pri- marily it was a year for fundamentals. LETTERMEN’S CLUB The Lettermen's Club is made up of the boys who earned their letter in sports by meeting the necessary re- quirements which include participa- ting in one half of the total quarters, a c average, pass three courses, attend every practice, good sports- manship, citizenship, and complete the season. We are very proud of the wonderful bunch of boys who make up the Lettermen's Club. The Pep Club has sponsored many pep assemblies throughout the year and it has increased the school spirit. We have had a better turn out at games and this year we also have five cheerleaders instead of four. We hope next year we will have an even larger pep club than ever before. C. Olson, L. Hulsey, V. STUDENT COUNCIL IN ACTION Waynoka's new Student Council carried out three main projects during the last few months of school. These were: Frontier Day, Fly the Flag Week Observance, and Student Council election and installation of new officers. Frontier Day was during the month of April to observe the anniversary of the opening run into Oklahoma. Everyone was asked to dress in western or frontier clothes. The result was some comical and some very realistic costumes. There were dance hall girls, old ladies with bonnets, gun slingers and a few real dudes. Even many of the teachers entered into the spirit of things to make Frontier Day a real success. Fly the Flag week was observed by Waynoka Students in accordance with Fly the Flag Week in Oklahoma as declared by Governor Edmondson. A kick-off assembly with special instructions started the week off in grand style. Each day the flag was raised and lowered by a different class. The entire school participated in the Pledge of Allegiance which was led by the presidents of the respective classes over the P. A. system. The last main function of the Student Council was election and in- stallation of officers for the year 1961-'62. The campaign was brisk, fun, and dignified. After several close elections the final outcome was announced as follows: Bruce Hickman, president; Floyd Lamke, vice- president; Jonnie Herchock, treasurer; and Betty Moore, secretary. The new officers were installed in an inspiring candlelight ceremony by the retiring officers. Thus was ended the first year of Waynoka's newly organized Student Council. To provide a better student council next year provisions have been made for the new officers to attend a training school at OSU this summer. SENIOR DAY AND TRIP From doughnuts to Dollars for Carlsbad. Soap!! Help!! Yup! We went down in that hole! GRADUATION and BACCALAUREATE The day the caps and gowns arrived was a big one for the seniors. The boxes were no more than received until we had them out, trying them on. It was scarcely any time at all until Baccalaureate, Sunday May 14, 1961. Leon Sewell from the Baptist Church delivered the sermon and the senior trio sang The Lord's Prayer. Commencement services were held for the 1961 graduating class, Thursday, May 18, 1961. The guest speaker was John Brett. Claude White, superin- tendent presented us with our diplomas. Janet Adams was valedictorian and Peggy Hanan and Marshall Frazer were salutatoria ns. Bruce Hickman and Trudy Snyder were special ushers. Wanda Helton played the processional and recessional for both baccalaureate and commencement. . - SR. BANQUET and PROM On April 14, 1961, the Juniors presented the Seniors with a lovely banquet and prom. It was held in the cafeteria and the blue room. The theme of this beautiful social event was a tropical isle . Verland Lamke and Waynona Trantham, seniors, were crowned king and queen.
