Dear Friends of Waynflete: There is a st-ory about the shield on the front cover. I t was taken from a plaque purchased this past summer in Oxford, and -except for the green fblack on the originalj represents the coat-of-arms of William -of Waynflete, Lord Bishop of Winchester. Magdalen C-ollege, which he founded, adopted his coat-of-arms. It was as Magdalen's coat-of-arms that it was purchased, knowing only that the lilies identi- fied Williams as being intimately connected with the college. However, upon examining some old prints of William, -one given t-0 us by the Rt. Rev. Oliver L. Loring, D.D., Bishop of Maine, we found that the college had adopted his coat- of-arms intact. Because -of this, the seniors have recommended to the Student Council that they make formal application to the Board of Trustees, that the coat-of-arms with our own green instead -of the black be ad-opted as the ojiicial insignia of The Waynflete School. Our -own Latin motto, Vincite Virtute Vera , will continue to be used below the shield when used as a blazer insignia or on a banner or pennant. It certainly has historical meaning for us, is attractive, and possible, as we are not under the jurisdiction of England's College of Heralds. I recommend it for your consideration. JOHN B. CHAPMAN, Headmaster 4
