In tribute to his many years ot' selfless devotion we, the seniors, dedicate our yearbook to Raymond King. 3 l Dear Friends of Waynflete: There is a st-ory about the shield on the front cover. I t was taken from a plaque purchased this past summer in Oxford, and -except for the green fblack on the originalj represents the coat-of-arms of William -of Waynflete, Lord Bishop of Winchester. Magdalen C-ollege, which he founded, adopted his coat-of-arms. It was as Magdalen's coat-of-arms that it was purchased, knowing only that the lilies identi- fied Williams as being intimately connected with the college. However, upon examining some old prints of William, -one given t-0 us by the Rt. Rev. Oliver L. Loring, D.D., Bishop of Maine, we found that the college had adopted his coat- of-arms intact. Because -of this, the seniors have recommended to the Student Council that they make formal application to the Board of Trustees, that the coat-of-arms with our own green instead -of the black be ad-opted as the ojiicial insignia of The Waynflete School. Our -own Latin motto, Vincite Virtute Vera , will continue to be used below the shield when used as a blazer insignia or on a banner or pennant. It certainly has historical meaning for us, is attractive, and possible, as we are not under the jurisdiction of England's College of Heralds. I recommend it for your consideration. JOHN B. Fven though we haven't been socialites during the school year, we have given several slumber parties and dinners and gone on one ski weekend at Pete Cate's in Conway, N. H. We are now planning a class trip to Boston where we will go to the Art Museum to work mainly on American History re- ports for extra class credit. '17 ' N .L. . L E , . xfnff The primary objective of the Student Council this year has been to continue making the Honor System work effec tively and productively. The new members have signed the pledge, meaning that they understand the way in which the Honor System functions here at Waynllete This year has been very successful in terms of the Honor Systemg I think that more people are really living by it and it means something special to them. This is the aim of the Honor System. A handbook for the student body and faculty has been started this year, its purpose being to acquaint everyone with the rules, regulations, and activities of the school. We are expecting this handbook to be ready for use in September 1957. The inspection of rooms has been continued, with very satis- factory results. The stickers and banners have still been in de- mand this year. We, the Student Council, are very grateful to Miss Hewes and Mr. Chapman, our faculty advisers, for their ever-present guidance and thoughtfulness. I wish to thank each and every student for their cooperation - this year has been wonderful, thanks to everyone. Betsey B. Loveland, President of Student Council 28 4: , is Ars Aix 'b jle .zdllgzfic eounci Left to Right: Debbie Payson, Twinkie Ashcrman, Diana Cobb Darene Holbrook Midge DeMotte. This year's Athletic Council was headed by Diana Cobb. The first project of the year was a newspaper and bottle drive to replenish the Student Council Treasury. This all-day project was successful through the combined efforts ol' the Athletic Council and the student body. Miss Hyde, the new athletic teacher, has been a great asset this year in planning games and organizing playdays. We are all grateful to her for obtaining the new uniforms which, is hoped, will bring better luck to next year's teams. Waynllete has had many basketball, hockey, and soft- ball games this year, and the tennis, ski, and swimming teams have been recognized for their accomplishments in the meets and games. Thanks to the fine spirit and loyalty of the Waynflete girls, this has been a very successful year for one and all. 2.9 we Milyneadeef Say Seated, Left to Right: S. Palmer, J. Dana, B. Blumenthal, L. This year the Waynsheet has been put out with the usual amount of groans and last-minute rushing. The first 78 Waynsheet was a surprise to all as it was printed in green. The third was a special anniversary issue, celebrating the 1 60th anniversary of the school with bits of Waynflete his- I u 'o tory as well as the usual articles and creative writing. Much credit goes to Dee Dee Dana for her excellent job as Editor, to our Assistant Editor, Margaret Soule, for steadfast work and marvelous cartoons, to Midge DeMotte for her pictures, and to Judy McManamy for her art work. The Waynsheet had a staff to be proud of this year. 30 me 3l'el'lCL t to Right: L. Adams, M. DeMotte, J. McManamy, D. Dana, H. Vermette, President: J. Emerson, A. Broderick, J. Lenhart, S. Once again the social calendar became filled with dances and concerts. In December a Christmas concert was given by the combined glee clubs of Hebron and Waynflete. The Hebron boys were guests in January at a dance at Purity Springs. On March 9, the high school was invited to a soiree at Hebron which proved to be'a great success. Holderness and Waynllete com- bined to give two concerts in April. WaynHete acted as hostess to the Hebron boys for a dance in May which was the final Hebron-Waynflete activities for '57. With the termination of the school year drawing near, plans for the June Ball are being formulatedg and if all goes well it should prove to be another successful social event. The committee wishes to acknowledge with gratitude the assistance of all faculty members and parents who have devoted time and guidance to our dances. 34 l r i -at ,r-.., . 1 lbw 69:1 .Q Q --N T- T1 MNH- rt. a. The Social Service Committee has been very busy this year. Along with supporting its regular charities, it supported the Hungarian Relief Fund and decided to continue the care of the Korean Child. The school's contribution to the United Fund this year was larger than ever. They practiced every Monday at the Y.M.C.A. in anticipation of the Southwestern Maine Interscholas- tic Meet. In spite of the practice only three girls placed in the afternoon try- outs - Judy Dana, Mary Soule, and Penny Pachios. Waynflete did exceedingly well. Judy and Penny placed second and third respectively in diving. Mary, our possible olmypic star, placed first in two events, the 50 yard backstroke and the 'l00 yard freestyle. Waynflete, which had the least number of swimmers, placed fourth out of eight schools. Our swimming team will probably improve even more in the next few years as many of the freshmen show promise. 36 .fgtll Lf, X fc, Z7 .l ff 5.,m..ff From Row, Left to Right: B. Robinson, M.
