TUDE T CCJUNCIL The Student Council records date back to 1940, However, there have been records of successful student councils as far back as 1932. The goal of this organization is to have more co-operation and a better understanding between the faculty and students. Their work includes giving food baskets to needy families at Thanksgiving, sponsoring the May Dance, and working on the polio drive each year. All of these projects have proved successful and interesting to the members, who enjoy participating in them and who are striving for a better student government. It is made up of students who are interested in improving farm and home life. Individual records are kept of the projects that each member selects. State contests are held each year in which these projects are entered, and Haywood County has ranked high with state winners. VU. T. H. S. began the first of a series of exchange programs which brings 4-H boys and girls from other states to visit with Haywood County members for a week during one summer. A return visit is made the following summer. The exchanges have thus far taken the members to Iowa and Texas. The purpose is to provide a chance for the members to perform in public and to provide some social activity. The club through the years has spon- sored several projects, including a radio forum broad- cast once a week on a current question, a nfreen min- ute radio program every Saturday morning for thirteen weeks of Louisa Mae Alcott's book, Lillle Wmnwz. They have sponsored Christmas dances and presented several plays. The theme for the current year is to obtain a better understanding of the world in which we live. T. H. S. and to see that awards are given to all deserving members in football, basketball, base- ball and tract. Any girl or boy earning one letter in either sport is eligible for membership. Current officers are: Manuel Hooper, President, Wilburn Davis, Vice-President, Geraldine Keenum, Secretaryg Hugh Frazier, Treasurer, jimmy Davis, Business Manager. Money for the club is raised in various ways and is used to purchase lettered sweaters for seniors who have lettered two or more years. Advisors are Carl Ratcliff and Bill Swift, who work closely with the group in all their activities. LIBRARY ASSISTANTS The Library Assistant's Club is made up of students who are taking or have taken library science. The duties of those students enrolled in library science are processing, repair and shelving of books, and the preparation and mounting of the bulletin board. Each year some members may attend the North Carolina Library Assistants' Association meeting in Raleigh, and each autumn members go to meetings of the Western District Library Assistants' Club which are held in Asheville.
