“
In a rose-tinted valley encircled by hills, Resting deep in a land that is blest, Where the warm golden sunlight brings concord and peace. Lies the school that our hearts all love best, A nd amidst those green hills in that valley of gold, Shall our praises to her ever rise. Till the mountains and hill-sides her hon¬ ors set forth And re-echo her name to the skies. Chorus: Then hurrah for our colors, our flag, and our school. Hurrah for our classmates so dear. Hurrah for our teachers so kind and so true. For the Board of Trustees give a cheer. And of delight in things well done. We’ll miss the walls of our dear school. We’ll ne’er forget the friends so true. Nor teachers sharing joys and fears. And struggling with us through the years. Our high school days are at an end. But, oh, to live them once again. Those times when trouble was not known. And lines of grief were never shown. Although we all shall soon be gone To do the work of life’s unknown, We’ll help to make a better land. Therefore, we make known unto all whom it may concern, this, our last will and testament; Item I—To the Junior Class: Juniors, we leave to you our most prized pos¬ sessions. We hope that you will cherish and keep them dear to your hearts—our boys who are coming back next year. Item II—To the rest of the students: We leave an ample supply of useless radia¬ tors, broken windows, and rat-infested lockers. Item III—Miss Jackson ' s Modern Problems class wishes to encourage you cold juniors to take the said subject, not mentioning the rising of temperature. Norma Jane Burgin and Kenneth Gaddis leave their neat way of leaving at the end of fifth period to any junior who can get by with it. Dick Powers leaves his way with the women to Bill Owens. Janie Franklin leaves her “gumchewing” ability to Patsy Rogers. Wilbur Owen and Billy Norman leave their shyness to Sally Mitchell and Lard Mehaffey. Jack Noland leaves his cute smile to Jack Kelly. Ruth Inman leaves her sweet disposition to Mary Nell Bryson. Carol Underwood leaves his “hot” trumpet to George Garrett. Nina McClure and Bob York leave their senior romance to Alice Marie Burgin and Don Wisen- hunt. Ervin Shook leaves his star position on the football squad to Howard Liner. Jackie Moody leaves her cute clothes to Dot Norris. Dan Watkins, our class grumbler, leaves that ability to some dissatisfied person. Mary Lou Messer and Owen Franklin leave their marriage license to Deryl Davis and Mildred Medford. Debray da Moore and Freda Jaynes leave their well-trod paths from the office to some girls who want the experience of doing good deeds. Katherine Hill leaves her Christmas engage¬ ment to some junior who will undoubtedly do the same next year. Tom Miller and Ed Rhodes leave their perfect attendance and outstanding grades in modern problems to Luther Shaw and Harold Garland. Betty Deal, Jessie Dotson, and Bonnie Hogue leave their quiet, reserved attitudes and ef¬ ficiency to some rowdy underclassmen. R. G. Coffee leaves his place in Spanish to Joe Michal. Juanita Jaynes and Helen Caldwell leave their artist’s traits to Faye Buchanan and Betty Jo Grant. Betty Sutton and Doris Hannah leave their shorthand books to some stenographical-minded juniors. Flora Hyatt leaves her neatness to Geneva Palmer. “Hoot” Gibson leaves his “pass snatching” ability to Bud Sheehan. Dot Cogdill leaves her red hair to Nancy Floyd. Gerald Breece leaves his talent (piano play¬ ing ,that is) to Charles Alley. Frances Leatherwood leaves that Scarlett O’Hara trait of waiting until tomorrow to worry about things to Jean Duckett. Betty Sawyer leaves her majorette position. Carry on, girls. We, the Seniors, hoping that you will be great¬ ly benefited by these gifts, do hereunto set our bond and fix our seal this twenty-ninth day of January, 1948. Bernice Smathers, Testator. jP opL mpn.eci Close your eyes And come with me Upon a flight Of fantasy. As we fly, The years speed away. We’re in the future Where tomorrow is today. We gaze about us With surprise, As the changed scenes Meet our eyes. We pick up a paper To see what Fate Had in store For the class of ’48. NEWS OF THE DAY: Flash! Her helpers are Bonnie Hogue and Nancy Knight. SPORTS: Dan Watkins has been selected to play in the Rose Bowl game New Year’s Day. Willie Mae McCracken, Mary Ruth Wyatt, and Ruth Phillips are on the Girl’s all-star bas¬ ketball team. Peggy Ensley had to quit because of her husband. SOCIETY: June and Tom Ray celebrated their wedding anniversary at their home. Their guests were Dr. Wayne Ferguson and his nurse, Elsie Glavich; Professor Rolf and his Latin student, Ted Hund¬ ley. They were honored to have the big movie executive, Jerry Liner, and the famous producer, Roy Howell. Lowry Gaddy showed the pictures he took in Africa and “The Voice”. Paul Frank¬ lin sang a few solos. Announcement has been made of the engage¬ ment of lovely Powers’ model, Dot Calhoun, to a wealthy New York banker. They will be mar¬ ried soon. Anna Jo Miller and Marie Strange have given a party for Dolores Underwood at the Trans¬ continental, owned by Frank Poteat. Many guests attended: the noted physicist, Lester Mess¬ er; Eunice Palmer, Marian Frady and Doris Bolin, who have just finished their new book of world travels, also attended. WANT ADS: Wanted: Man, preferably tall and dark for assistant in a new beauty parlor. Contact Rosalie McClure or Dot Cogdill. Wanted: Male and female help. We pay the highest salaries in town. It is an experience that we shall always remember and cherish. Our thanks go to Mr. Bowles and his secretary, Mrs. L. M. Richeson, whose cooperation and wonderful suggestions helped at all times. Also, I should like to give credit to Bob York and his assistants, who did such a good job of raising the larger part of the finances for our year book, and to Miss Terrell, our faculty adviser, for her assistance. I hope that you will always cherish this book, which has afforded me an experience I shall never forget. I thank you. Carol Underwood EDITOR-IN-CHIEF ASSISTANT EDITOR H. C. It has been taking place for the last eight years and was won this year by Danny McClure of the eighth grade. 1 ■1 For a good many years, the Waynesville Woman’s Club has sponsored a reading contest for girls in the grades nine through twelve. The contest takes place in the spring, and is one of the outstanding events in our school year. The contestants give readings of their own choice, either prose or poetry, the only barring rule being that the piece must be a literary selection. The first D. A. R. Boy’s Declamation contest was held on February 22, 1909, celebrating Washing¬ ton’s birthday. The purpose of the contest is to interest young men in public speaking and famous patriotic men. A gold medal, designed by a National D. A. R. Committee, is first prize; a second prize of a silver dollar has been given since the twenty-fifth anniversary. This is the 40th year of the an¬ nual contest. Senior 2)ifector ' i MAX GENE ALLISON Physical Education, 1, 2; Youth Club, 1, 2, 3, 4; F.F.A.
