We have many of them here Some lead to classrooms where we may prepare for our fu- ture occupations. Some lead to the gym and athletic field where some gain proficiency in sports and others relax by watching them. Still other doors lead into the auditorium where fu- ture musicians and thespians have a chance to demonstrate their talents. By entering each of these doorways, we hope to show the well- rounded education that a W.H.S. student enioys. A Letter From Our Principal The school annual is highly sought after by students, teachers, and parents. It represents an excellent pictorial history of the school term. It has become invaluable in class reunions, for personal library, and record of class groups and extra-curricular activities. There are many alumni who will glance through its pages, reminisce and mentally compare this edition of the Oracle with other annuals. The annual takes much time in its preparation, picture taking, gathering snapshots, the business of preparing cuts, doing write-ups, themes, and many group meetings. The finished product deserves a commendation for Mrs. Helen Maxwell, our ORACLE sponsor, as well as her fine student staff, for another good Waynesburg High School annual. The T957 graduating class is largely responsible for the leadership repre- sented therein. This group has left a fine record in all areas of our school pro- gram, they have been outstanding in athletics, with a good football team, an ex- cellent wrestling season, and other sports. Many were active in band, choral music, forensics, vocational programs, and achieved noble academic standards. The '57 class presented the first all-senior commencement exercise in recent years. Most of the class will finish their schooling with a feeling of a job well done. Some others will be leaving the classrooms with a sense of failure for not having kept up with the work assigned. More graduates will go to colleges, nurses training, and advanced educational fields than we have had in many years. It marks the end ofa scholastic career for some and the real beginning for others. All will be thinking seriously ofa new life ahead. The editors get to work as early as April of the preceding spring to plan the book, decide on theme and plan the dummy. The iunior editors automatically become senior editors and the remainder of the staff is chosen as soon after the March T5 deadline as possible. This year the staff completely reorgan- ized the yearbook and we hope that the new set-up pleases our subscribers. Tattling Transmitter The school paper is pub- lished about once a month or eight times a year. It is a combined product of the newspaper staff and mem- bers of the Typing Il classes who type the stencils and run them off. The newspaper not only prints the latest news but also keeps the student body informed of club happenings and various social events. In addition to enlightening and entertaining the student body, the preparation of the paper provides valuable ex- perience for its members: Re- porters gain experience in creative writing, proofread- ing ond newspaper organiza- tion. Commercial students on the staff learn to type news- paper copy, prepare stencils and run the mimeograph. The art staff gains experi- ence in drawing appropriate picture covers and in lettering headlines. The purpose of the Library Science Club is to help attain a greater knowledge of the use of the library and thus be able to help fel- low students find information or references. The outstanding project this year as in the past was National Book Week Poster Con- test. The competition between the home rooms proved to be quite keen thus making the decision as to the best one quite difficult. Club members entered into the spirit of the Scene taken during one ofthe librory's busy periods. Tri-Hi-Y's platform is as exemplified by high school girls CHU, affili- ated with the Y. M. C. A. KYB. Alpha Tri-Hi-Y of Waynesburg has many beneficial proiects. This year, we packed bas- kets for the needy, collected money for the Muscular Dystrophy Fund, and donated money to several useful projects. Fonner. f I The Beta Tri-Hi-Y had a busy and success- ful year. Among their worthwhile projects for the year was the program planned for Brotherhood Week. The program consisted of a Frank Sinatra film, The House I Live In and a choral reading, Brotherhood of Man. Three freshmen and three sophomores took part in the choral reading. Beta Tri-Hi-Y To finance their many charitable works, the girls operated a concession during the winter sports season, and also sponsored a bakesale. Forensics The Forensics club is affiliated with the Na- tional Forensic League and abides by its regu- lations for members. This group is one ofthe most active in our school for it participates in tournaments at least once a month and some- times twice. Of the group there are about seven or eight members who participate in every tournament. On March 23 the semi- finals for the year were held and several of our people participated in them. Titled Ger- aldine and the White Robe, the story con- cerned a young teen-age girl who spent most of her time and her thoughts on herself. On Christmas Day through a mix-up, she learned the true meaning of Christmas and of giving. The part of Geraldine, the mixed-up teen ager was played by Connie McClelland with a fine supporting cast. Le Cercle Francais is composed ot mem- bers of the second year French class. The club's main purpose is to give the students an opportunity to further their study of France, its history, customs, people, and especially its language. This was done during the year by the use of French plays, film strips, pictures Mrs. Jabour speaking at one of the club's meetings. French Club of France and of French provincial and his- torical costumes, French legends and music, and a guest speaker whenever possible. All meetings held once a month are conducted in French and every member takes part in the club's activities in some manner. Camera Club This year the Camera Club membership was so large that it was necessary to divide the group into two sections. These groups met on alternate Thursday nights at the Pres- byterian Parish House where they developed and printed the pictures they had taken. During the past year our chapter helped to organize an area F. F. A. chapter and initiated new members. Members of the group attended and took part in the Pittsburgh Livestock Show and the Pennsylvania State Farm Show held in Harrisburg in January. While at the State 20 James Jones Delbert Fox . The demcnstration team took second place and won 540. This chapter also sponsored concessions at the Greene County Fair and during the Waynesburg High School home football games. A. is a club for Home Economics girls, sponsored by the American Home Eco- nomics Association and the Home Economics Service of the U. S. Oftice of Education. The club was founded on June ll, T945 and our school affiliated with the national organiza- tion soon after its founding. Our purposes are to promcte a growing appreciation of the joys of homemaking, to emphasize the importance of worthy home membership, to encourage democracy in home and community life, to work for good home and family life for all, to promote interna- tional good will, to foster the development of creative leadership in home and community life, to promote wholesome individual and Mrs. Carter, Mrs. Scott group recreation and to further interest in home economics. Our main service to the school is the oper- ation of a concession stand in cooperation with F.F.A., at home football games. The money earned is used to finance a team of girls who will present a demonstration at the State Farm Show in Harrisburg, to entertain the mothers of our members at a Mother- Daughter Banquet and to contribute to the support of our War Orphan. We sew for the Red Cross, prepare and serve an All-Sports Banquet, a Father-Son Banquet for F. F.A., and the annual School Board Christmas Banquet. This year our club presented to the Home Economics department a silver tea and coffee service. 2l Nature Study Club The Nature Study Club is made up of during the year. The art field is a specialized one. It is not crowded and the opportunities are many today. The cultural value of such study is neces- sary for one to complete a well rounded edu- Art Class cation. Future Nurses ot America The main purpose of the Future Nurses' Club is to help girls decide whether or not they want to be nurses. All our activities are planned with this purpose in view. Our girls wcrk at the hospital two days each semester, we visit hospitals in surrounding communities, and we have movies and speakers so that members of the Future Nurses Club can learn the requirements for admission to schools of nursing, and also they may learn the fields cf work open to graduate registered nurses. Our club sponsors no social activities because we are a pre-professional club. The girls offer their services in the nurses room during the school day. They also helped Mrs. Lemmon during the polio inoculation. Silveus, N Phillips. Future Teachers of America The I-uture Teachers of America Club was formed last year to encourage high school stu- dents to enter the teaching profession. Activi- ties of FTA show the members the different phases of teaching. The main project each year will be to visit a college that some of the members may be interested in attending. This year we planned to visit California State Teachers Col- lege. Some of our projects are: substitute teaching when a teacher is unexpectedly ab- sent, tutoring, noon duty in the office, attend- ing institute, and many others. The highlights of the year have been the presentation of our state and national charter by Mr. Longanecker, superintendent of Greene County Schools, and of our club charter by the Student Council. During football season the band provided entertainment at half-time. Cressida Ketchem's acrobatic routine thrilled everyone and so did the exciting display of talent of Cora Ellen Shipman and Jeanine Wise. They did their torch-lit baton routine. In the Coal Festival Parade W.H.S. Band came oft with first place. Many compliments have been made on this marching unit. The band chose Lena McCullough as their representative in the annual Christmas par- ade. This year instead of having a spring concert, the chorus presented a Christmas Cantata en- titled The Babe of Bethlehem. There are approximately fifty-three members in chorus this year. Three members of the mixed quartet at- tended District Chorus, in January at Turtle Creek, High School, Turtle Creek, Pennsyl- vania. They were: Dana Long, Marilyn Knicely, and Charles Acheson. The mixed quartet has sung for different organizations during the year such as the Twentieth Century Club, the Wool Growers Association, etc. and Mr. Gray is to be com- mended upon the good work he has done. On Saturday March 9, 1957 our boys won the Section 4 Wrestling Tournament by a score of 54 to 19 for Mapletown who placed second. During the preliminary match on Friday afternoon, eleven of our twelve boys won. During the semi-finals Friday night, ten of our eleven boys won, and on Saturday night seven ofthe boys finished in first place. On Saturday March 16, 1957 seven of our boys were entered in the semi-finals in the Regional Tournament in Washington. Five survived to enter the finals. Lettermen's Club The Lettermen's Club is an organization whose main purpose is to produce good sportsmen and leaders in the school. lts mem- bers consist of the boys who have met the qualifications ot a varsity sport to acquire a letter. The club's main activities of the year are the Donkey Ball Game and the magazine campaign shared with the Senior Class. These two proiects are to make money so that at the end of the year all of the Seniors who have earned two letters or more can be presented with a Lettermen's Jacket. This signifies their achievements in sports while a student of Waynesburg High School. In addition mem- bers of the club took up a collection for the Richard Kadis Fund to help pay the expenses of a badly iniured football player. This aftair is held in the spring of the year to honor all of our athletes. The dinner is prepared by our Home Economics department and is known for and wide for the amount of food served. The step upward from ele- mentary school to high school is a big one, and most of our freshmen spent quite some time getting used to the new way of doing things. Not too many activities are open to members of the freshman class, although they were well represented on the Junior High Freshman Class Football and Basketball squads. Several members of the freshmen class became mem- bers of Beta Tri-Hi-Y and others joined the chorus and band. The new Craftsmen's Club was opened to freshmen and many found an interest there. During the second semester the freshmen began to feel at home and became active members of the student body. 5. The gym was decorated in an attractive manner for this occasion hon- oring the seniors, and the school was well rep- resented. Who's Who in the Senior Class Each year the members of the ORACLE STAFF select people from the Senior Class who they feel are outstanding in various traits. They select three or four people for each cate- gory and then the group is voted upon by the entire senior class. On these two pages are the people who received the highest votes in each category. By looking at these pictures you can see im- mediately why they were chosen. Most Likely to Succeed Clara Pitcock and Jim Turner One of the prerequisites to a suc- cessful life is the ability to cut out paper dolls. Beside the usual concessions during the winter sports program that the clubs and or- ganizations maintain, this group had some money making ventures of its own. In con- iunction with the Lettermen's Club this group sold magazines to help defray the cost of their graduating expenses.
