March 2, 3, and 4 were special days in Waynesburg High School, not only for the wrest- lers, but for the entire student body, as they marked the dates of the W. P. I. A. L. Wrestling tournament held at our school. Twenty-two high schools had entrants in the tournament and ap- proximately two hundred matches were held. Canonsburg ran off with first place obtain- ing 37 points, Waynesburg was second with 19, Washington third with 16, and Munhall fourth with 15 points. Tom Alberts and Ronnie Kurtz came through the tournament unbeaten, and John Barna came up to the finals taking second place. A MENTS P. I. A. A. At Washington High School on March 10 and 11 was held the annual P.I.A. A. Wrest- ling tournament. Tom Alberts, in the 165 lb. class, became a state champion for the second consecutive time, by defeating Weise from Holli- daysburg 10-2. Ronnie Kurtz in the 103 Ib. class reached the finals, but was defeated by Osborne from Forty Fort, to become state runner- up. District 7 CW. P. I. A. LJ unofficially tied with District 6 and 9 for the team championship by taking four state championships. Golden troph- ies were awarded the winners of the tournament by four Washington businessmen. The Oracle congratulates both Alberts and Kurtz, for they have indeed achieved a great honor. Playing Soft Ball Folk Dancing A Basketball Game Girls' Keep Slim and Lovely One, two, three, tour, typifies all that you would hear if you were to go into our high school gymnasium during a girl's gym class, the beginning of our high school term. You would see the girls doing calisthenics in uni- son, with Mrs. Hill our Physical Education in- structor. If you were to go in a little later during the year you would see the girls having on blue and red pinnies playing girl's basketball. The maiority ofthe girls like this sports season Sports best of all, and some of the games become quite exciting. We go back about two months later and we find the girls divided into teams with a net between them and batting a white ball back and forth-volleyball! The object of the game is to keep the ball moving to and fro over the net by the girls on each team batting the ball, if the ball is caught or touches the floor it is ci default against the team which causes it, and the opposite team gets one point. Exercise Pays Dividends We return toward the latter part of the school term and observe the girls playing a lively game of softball. If the weather is fav- orable many times the girls will go to the foot- ball field and hold their game outside. Thus you see the girls' sports activities are varied, so as to provide the girls with knowl- edge and experience of all sports. The girls take a great interest in these gymnastics and under the capable leadership and teaching of Mrs. Hill the girls are becoming very adept in athletics. These sports are not only a source of enjoyment to the girls, but it also gives them experiences in versatility, coopera- tion, and good sportsmanship. Under the direction of Mrs. Hill the girls presented a Girls' Night for the adults of the community. The program was excellently done, and proved to be very enjoyable in all fields. Letters and sweaters are awarded to the girls at the close of the school year on the basis of points earned for their activity in all sports. SENIOR G. A. A. The l95O Oracle is finished at last and the Oracle Staff presents it to you with the hope that it will prove to be just the kind of yearbook you have always wanted. Turning out the kind of book that would please you was the thought that the editors and advisors kept first in mind last fall, as they started planning the dummy and deciding all of the little details that must be decided in editing a yearbook. This includes for one thing, more pages of snapshots. It also includes less crowded class and organization pictures. Do you approve? We, of the Oracle Stott, hope that as you look through your Oracle many years from now it will serve its purpose well by bringing back old memories of good times and high school friends. Read all about it in the latest edition of the Tatling Transmitter. The staff members with their noses for news pick up all the news, Cscandals, gossip, etc.l that floats around the halls of old W.H.S. The majority of the paper concentrates on the lighter side and the social life of the students, but it also has a serious tinge to it in the edi- torial and the feature. This year the staff introduced a new method for bringing members into the staff. The prospective members were given a form and told to write an article for the paper, the writers of the best articles were then taken on to the staff as full-fledged iournalists. REPORTERS Seated: Anderson, Yanak, Loughman, Dittman, Davis S. Clark, Bonifield. Standing: Roupe, Williams, Kiger, Grimes, Thomp- son, Eddy, Houston, F. In directing even a school newspaper it takes plenty of co-operation between the whole staff. The editors write the assignments and hand them out, the reporters round up the news, the sponsor censors it, the typists type it, the editors set it up, it again goes back to the typists to be typed on the stenograph, the editors run it oft, and the distributing staft delivers it. So you see it involves quite a com- plicated process, but the staFf under the leader- ship of the co-editors Greco, McNay, and Cor- win, has done an excellent iob. Congratula- tions! STUDENT BOARD Our Legislature After a year of stumbling around getting no place, the Student Council was renamed and reiuvenated by a new constitution. Under the new constitution the council is now known as the Student Board. Moreover, this year the Board has become the successful legislative and execu- tive body it should be. The main accomplishment of the Board this year was the bringing about of more coopera- tion and less friction between the Board and stu- dents. Also, the Board passed many laws and completed many proiects. Some of these in- cluded dealing with problems caused by the granting of charters to organizations, noon con- cessions, noon program, conditions in study halls, special assemblies, and many other school func- tions. The way in which the Board has met these problems is proof that it can handle its business efficiently. As the year closed, it was the hope of every member that future Boards would follow the ex- cellent example that the Student Board of T950 has set forth. At the first of the year each homeroom elects one member to represent it. Many tournaments are held through- out the year. Starting with softball and follow- ing through with German baseball, basketball, and volleyball. The girls and boys each have their own basketball team. So far this year Room T7 was winner of softball and Room 6 win- ner of German baseball. Every day of the week is used for the games except Friday. On Friday, popular songs are played and dancing is the noon hour event. This enables many to learn how to dance. This noon program is for the bus riders and those that eat their lunch at school, but many of the town students take part also. The represen- tatives of this organization are all bus riders. Mr, Porter is sponsor of this group and with his help, it is working into a very capable organi- zation. While all other students are study- ing like mad, these talented students are playing with clay! Modeling beautiful and lovely things. Next is weaving, which takes weeks and weeks of hard work. When the projects are finished they are very interesting and worthwhile. Next on the schedule is water colors. This is also a very interesting project. It takes skill and talent to get the various colors blended just right. There are several other projects, but I think and I am sure you will agree that these are the most in- teresting. For the first time the class is entering some of its work in the Scholastic Art Exhibition in Pittsburgh. They hope to be able to visit this exhibition before the close of the school term. LIBRARY SCIENCE CLUB Book Keepem Some may work till the set of sun But library tasks are never done. We card and we file, we shelve and we mend, To work of this kind there is no end. With noise and confusion every hour of the day No wonder we're tired and have little to say. For reference the students all come in bunches, Till it's hard to think or have any hunches. On our shelves we have so many books But if you're not serious please find other nooks. We'lI try to help in our own special way If you are real workers,-if not, stay away. Make friends with books is the slogan this year, Some will bring laughter, others a tear. You'II find old favorites and new ones galore We know we have titles you are all looking for. But now comes the end of another school year. 'Tis time for our banquet and awards we hold dear. Thus twenty-one members who worked the year through With very best wishes will bid you adieu. ALPHA - TRI- HI - Y Helping Others The Alpha-Tri-Hi-Y is an organization of iunior and senior girls who have at least a B average. To create -they start with themselves. Recently they have been having discussions from the Tri-Hi-Y magazine Teen Talk . They discuss such teen age problems as gambling, cheating, and alcoholic beverages. By this discussion they learn to meet and overcome such problems. By taking part in devotional exercises at club meetings they have learned to maintain good character. To extend -the club gives holiday bas- kets to poor and needy families in the com- munity. They helped the Beta-Tri-Hi-Y make the Christmas dance a success and sponsored several sweater hops during the school term. By all these activities they help To create, maintain, and extend good Christian Charac- ter which is the purpose of the club.
