O F3 S-4 cn I Q 2 Jh.am.Q, WHEN WE REMEMBER This year the Oracle Staff of 1948 selected the theme of our book, STUDENT LIFE. The Staff believed this theme to be symbolic of the friendly spirit as found among Waynesburg High School students. The able leaders who guide the progress of our school endeavor daily to make Waynesburg High School a pleas- ant and profitable place in which to study and serve. The school tries to train the numerous students to become successful business men, economical house- wives, conscientious workers, and forward-looking citizens. Our Activities have been a great help and brought us through difficult per- iods with ease. They have shown us the ideal way of lifev-a clean way of ivmg. In our Sports Departments-football, basketball, wrestling and baseball, we have learned the ideal of good sportsmanship and the spirit of fair play. May- be we havenit always had winning teams but we have always been good losers. VV aynesburg High has gained the complete respect of other schools. Our students have exemplified their good spirit of STUDENT LIFE in the services they have rendered their school and community. We believe the mem- bers of the Class of 1948 will accept this challenge and go forth to become worth- while citizens of this community. We go out to face the puzzling world with new knowledge and confidence gained in our four years of high school. Entering Waynesburg High School as ex- cited and hopeful freshmen, we began at once to take our place in the school. We successfully mastered the problems which inevitably con- fronted us during our iirst year and set up goals to attain. As sophomores, we had already made a name for ourselves. We participated in all sports and activities and contributed our skill and abilities in every way possible. CLASS OFFICERS President A ,.,., . james Stephenson . By the time we were juniors, we were an es- tablished part of the school. VVe were one of the most popular classes in sports, as well as club activities and social affairs. We also sponsored one of the most successful proms in the high school's history. Now the time has come for us to hid fare- well to Waynesburg High School and with it the good times we have had and the good friends we have made. All of us will miss high school and none of us will ever forget it. We have reached our goal after four years and hope we have set a good example. To the faculty and all of our un- derclassmen, we say, So long and good luck. Beside the busy street that climbs the hill, Where noisy trucks and vans whiz by at will, There, in the busy mansion of my lay We studied hard, or played from day to day. A class of genii, we, and handsome too, Although the fact was recognized by few. Well had we learned our teachers, moods to know And when our pranks would surely bring us woe. For scheming how to bluff our way through class, Yet know enough the tough exams to pass, And go to parties, dream of dates, and shows, Was pleasanter than work, as each one knows. And we were cute-or that is what we thought . As we gave a senior play for funds we sought To buy a parting gift for our dear old Alma mater And fortify our lmowlerge of the dramferj. And now we seniors will say Good-bye As we are looking the future straight in the eye. We wish you all success, happiness, and fame For those are the things We hope to gain. Three years ago We entered these Walls as ugreenv freshmen, eager and a little uncertain. During this time, the members of our class have participated in all the scholastic, athletic, and social events of the school. They have taken their various places in the mixed chorus, girls' chorus, orchestra, the newspaper staff, the Oracle staff, and various other activities. In the spring of 1946 students of our class Walked off with first, second, and third places in the college scholastic test in Mathematics. ln Dille, Levos, Conner, Booher 28 1947 they took first, second, and third places in Biology. Also, We boast of several prominent members of the Forensic club, one of Whom belongs to the National League. At the end of this year five of our roll will receive their letters in football, one in basketball. Although We em- erged unsuccessful from most of these athletic events, our boys gave it all they had which is what really makes the game worth watching. In the future We Will strive to live up to the standards which have been set for us by our predecessors and do all within our power to leave a record of which We may be proud. VV e didn,t have much trouble knowing who was who, but there were a lot of unfamiliar freshman faces. We felt much superior to the freshmen, yet we were still classed as lowly underclassmen. During the last two weeks of summer and continuing on into the school year our sophomore boys claimed their recognition in football. Later Mulvaney, Moston, Summersgill, Hoffman. on in the school year they were not to be denied places on the basketball, wrestling and baseball teams. VVe are glad we were able to be in school when the team's name was changed from Yel- low Iacketsi' to KRed Raiders. We also ranked very high in scholastic life. We are very proud to acknowledge the point that our class prac- tically runs the Photography Club. Also our class came through with one hundred percent in Junior Red Cross and the March of Dimes. We now finish our Hrst two years at Waynes- burg High School. May our last two years be as successful and prosperous as the two preceed- ing years. A GOOD BEGINNING On September 2, 1947 we, most honorable students of this cathedral of learning, placed ourselves in the hands of fate, and with much modesty and timidity, made our way into VVaynesburg High School. How proud we were! We were freshmen in high school at last! Our dreams had become real instead of mere visions. The first few weeks saw us roaming sadly around the building, going Stewart, Cole, George, Bonifield to the wrong rooms and accepting reluctantly the as-ye thoughtv advice of our seniors. However, as time went on, with the aid of our teachers and superiors, we grew accustomed to the ways of high school life. Now we feel as big as any sophomore, and believe that we have established a favorable record for ourselves as we remain determined to continue to uphold the worthy reputation accredited to Waynesburg High School. THE MERRY-GO-ROUN D VVhen it comes to energy, pep, attractiveness and coordination, our cheerleaders cannot be sur- passed. Regardless of how the game is going they help us keep our spirit. It is their duty to conduct Pep Meetingsv and just one of these puts the student body into a winning spirit. Cheering just when your team is Winning is not good sportsmanship nor is it being a good Cheerleader When the going looks tough and the chances are slim for winning, that is when our cheerleaders really go into action. You can always depend on these girls to put the crowd in good spirits and to cheer the team. After many months of prepara- tion on the part of the Oracle staff, the 1948 year- book is now completed, and we are presenting it to you. Your yearbook is a book of delightful mem- ories, a remembrance of the good times you have had and the good friends you have made during your high school days. In later years each time you look at your yearbook, you will relive the best days of your life and really appreciate them. As you look at your yearbook, do you ever stop to think about the Work that goes into it? Do you ever wonder how the book is organized or who does the organizing? No one person can put out a yearbook, it takes the efforts of many persons Working together. Each member on the staH has a certain work to do and a limited time in which to do it, as there are deadlines to be met. There are pictures to be taken and mounted, write-ups to write, dummies to make, and typing and proof-reading to be done. These are not all of the tasks, but they are among the most impor- tant. All these take considerable time and pa- tience. 54 All in all the Oracle staff considers it a priv- ilege to have had the honor of working on such a worth-while book. It has been educational and enjoyable. We hope that our efforts will have been to some avail and that you will enjoy read- ing this yearbook as much as we have enjoyed Working on it. The Oracle Staff is a member of the Pennsyl- vania School Press Association, a Round Table of the Pennsylvania State Education Association. A VICNETTE For the past few years the art class of Waynesburg High School, under the instruction of Mr. Rinehart, has been growing into a bigger and better organization, and is now ready to assert itself as a vital part of school affairs. A great step was taken in this direction when the class was given a pleasant new classroom of its own in which to work. The year began with an exciting new pro- ject, paper mache, followed by a short period of finger painting, which in turn changed to water colors and later on, to textile painting. Klub This year's art class has distinguished itself by its enthusiasm and interest in other school activities, such as: making posters for school events and also for outside organizations, assist- ance in decorative ideas for formal dances and drawings for the yearbook and newspaper. The class has really worked hard and has turned out more and better work than ever before. The members of the art class would like to thank their sponsor, for without his help and pa- tience, we could not have advanced to the posi- tion we now hold as one of the most important departments of the school. The orchestra is one of the most active and hardworking organizations in the school. Des- pite the first squeaks and groans which precede the birth of a new number, they always come through with something new and outstanding. The orchestra has played several new com- positions from their large repertoire which added much to our assemblies, and it is instrumental in the success of our plays and special programs which the school opens to the public. The or- chestra gives its annual concert with the Girls, Chorus, and they are widely acclaimed by the audience. Each Tuesday and Wednesday during fourth period they can be heard in the auditorium practicing songs such as: KRose Mariev, Serenade , Inst a Memoryv, Tea for Twov, and many others. Each year the Girls, Chorus takes part in various activities. They sing for special assem- bly programs in the school, in churches of the community, and have an annual concert in the spring. This year something new was tried for our Christmas assembly. The Girls, Chorus was accompanied by the band in singing many carols. The chorus, under the eflicient direction of Mr. Gray, is working faithfully toward making their concert this spring a most successful and enter- taining one. Being a member of the Girls, Chorus is an inspiring and worthwhile experience. It teaches cooperation in singing in a large group and self- conHdence in singing individually. We express sincere appreciation of the chor- us and Mr. Cray for their Wonderful services ren- dered this year and Wish them continued success in the future. Although the members still have that new', feeling, they certainly proved them- selves troopers when they performed like old timersl' in the concert in the spring of 47. This year the Mixed Chorus, as did the Orchestra and the Girls Chorus, changed direc- tors. Miss Hoffman, who last autumn became Mrs. Wallace, handed her baton fthat had di- rected famous concertsj to our able and experi- enced band director, Mr. Cray, who is Working hard at the difficult task of handling four musical organizations at one time. Every Friday the music of the Mixed Chorus can be heard as the girls and boys practice their various selections. These musical numbers are ones of interest to everyone, sometimes going from the ridiculous to the sublime in one experi- enced jump. fhofzua, The school is proud of this organization for not only does it please and give enjoyment to others but those in the chorus boast of good times and fun from singing. Of course, all of us must work, but We must also have some sort of recreation. This is one reason for having the G. A. A. It provides recreation for girls and gives them an opportunity to participate in their favorite sports, and in so doing, furnishes them with good, healthful exercise. Also, the G. A. A. teaches fair play and good sportsmanship, no matter what the game might be or which team happens to win. It teaches the girls to play and cooperate as a team as well as individuals. In addition, it teaches the girls the importance of wholesome exercise and the appreciation of the iigjoyment that a few sports add to their school 1 e. One of the most favorite games among th girls is basketball. It is a lively game whic requires alertness, speed, and skill. Also impor tant is the ability to make baskets which come through patient efforts and hours of practice Once you have mastered this game you will find it extremely interesting and entertaining. After five years of being active, Forensics have once more taken a high place among the school's activities. Only a few people realize what is involved in having reinstated an inactive Forensic organization. An inactive group must first recharter its old charter, which requires five persons to receive twenty points at a tournament held by a competing school. The Forensic group proudly shows on its record the fact that not only did they receive the required number of points, but they also took first place, ranking higher than any other school in their first tournament! They also have to their credit six members of the National Forensic League! At other tournaments this year they took many first and second places. The school is certainly proud of this group, for not only have they received recognition through their eiorts, but because the members are being taught to speak with more ease, poise, and assurance, helping them to face an ever trouble- some world with a firmer, surer step. 64 First Row: Scott, Bristor, Taylor, Dulaney, Yoder, Moore, George, Yost, Scott, W. A. of Waynesburg High School, is a large group of boys who desire to learn as much as possible about agriculture. Many of these boys will later become farmers. They meet every school day for three successive periods and under the instruction of Mr. Swart attempt to learn farming in all its phases. The boys meet for classroom sessions, as well as going to various farms where they apply much of their knowledge and instruction to actual projects. The organization has sent several represen- tatives to farm shows and displays in Pennsyl- vania and West Virginia. Many of the boys have no 0 received valuable training from attending the annual livestock shows throughout the state, sev- eral have gained experience in the care of the animals which they have exhibited in these shows and come home with the blue and red ribbons. Every year the boys receive training in fitting and exhibiting livestock at the Waynesburg Fair. Some of the members act as judges for other shows and fairs. Several of the F. F. A. boys and director traveled to Harrisburg where they at- tended the Annual State Farm Show. We are quite sure that Greene County will uphold its high standards of farming in the years to come as these members carry out the enthusi- astic participation which they now display. Jful-303 THE TIE THAT BINDS During the past few years in Waynesburg High School, the Alpha Tri-Hi-Y has proved to be one of the most popular clubs functioning. It is a christian organization made up of girls from the junior and senior classes whose grades are of a KB average or higher. Most of the girls have had experience in the Beta Tri-Hi-Y their sophomore and freshman years and are now well trained in the club activities. Regular Alpha meetings are held twice a month at which times they have devotions, dis- cussions and take up business matters. Also, once a week for six weeks a teen-talk is held for all the girls in school who are interested. Activities of the club consist of giving to charity organizations, giving baskets of food to the needy at Thanksgiving and Christmas, sell- ing Christmas cards and doing anything they may be called upon to do for the well-being of others. The Alpha Tri-Hi-Y sponsors the Cinderella Ball and cooperates with the Beta Tri-Hi-Y in spon- soring the Christmas Dance. The Alpha Tri-Hi-Y under the able leader- ship of Miss Ullom serves as an educational, as well as a social club. It teaches the girls how to work and cooperate in a group. The idea of Pure thoughts, pure words, and pure deedsi' is practiced in all of the club activities. OFFICERS President . ..,, ...... . .. Mary lane Corwin Vice President ..,... ....,.,., . They have stud- ied their characteristics, identification, and habi- tatg also making collections of these when pos- sible. This year the club purchased black letters using a red cardinal as the design for the letter. The club meets every day the seventh period in Room 19. Some of the members of the club expect to compete in the Nature Study competitive exam- inations which will be held at Waynesburg Col- lege and Carnegie Institute of Technology. They are planning a trip to Pittsburgh this spring where they will visit several points of interest to a nature lover. It is composed of a small group of students who have had some experi- ence in playing chess and those who have a desire President Klub to learn the game. The members hold meetings after school in Room 3 and once a month meet in one of the member's homes. The group has found chess quite instructive as well as a great deal of fun. Sponsor President Sponsor Miss Jacobs photo CAMERA, ACTION The Photography Club is made up of ten en- thusiastic and energetic members who have an important part in making school functions a suc- cess. At every sweater hop, while the dancers float along on a stream of music beneath the magic crystal ball, it is this group who sets up equipment and operates the controls with quiet efficiency. VVhenever a public address system is needed at wrestling matches, dances, and other functions, the Photography Club is right on hand to supply Fredley. ris, Hoyt, Bower Klub it. As the use of motion pictures for classroom instruction increases, these boys respond with eagerness to the demand upon their time and energy, and they may be seen in various class- rooms at various times operating the new Bell 6: Howell projector.
