A grad- uate of Virginia Tech with a degree in business education, Mr. Gilbert has spent all of his 29-year teaching career at WHS, including student teaching. A resident of Staunton, Mr. Gilbert and his wife Beverley have three chil- dren and four grandchildren. His num- ber-one hobby is following Virginia Tech sports, and he is well known as one of the leading “Hokie” fans in the area. Over the years, Mr. Gilbert has assisted in the production of the school yearbook by allowing staff members to use the business depart- ment typing facilities and by making his office telephone available to the staff adviser. More than that, Mr. Gil- bert’s moral support and genuine con- cern for the hard work that it takes to produce the yearbook is a great source of comfort. For all of these reasons, SKYLINE ’85 is dedicated to Mr. John Gilbert. TABLE OF CONTENTS Seniors...... Student Life . Juniors...... Sophomores.. Freshmen ....... This year the WHS Homecoming was on Friday, the nineteenth of October. To get in the mood of Homecoming, the school observed “Spirit Week” which consisted of such activities as “Hat and Button Day”, “Inside-Out Day”, and ‘Purple and Gold Day”. These efforts were rewarded by the Little Giant Football Team as they defeated the Falcons of Central High School. During halftime of the game, Doug Sadosuk and Susan Wood were crowned King and Queen. Festivities concluded the following night with the Homecoming Dance — this year entitled “Almost Paradise.” The street lights are shining bright. The billboards are shedding their light. As a result of the most recent city school reorganization, this was the first ninth grade class to attend WHS since the 1960's. From the time that they arrived in the fall of 1981, members of the class have assumed a lot of responsibility and have demonstrated that they were equal to the task. In the final year, 1984-85, leaders of the Class of 85 not only kept tradition going but revived some past traditions. They initiated “The Spring Formal” to take the place of the Prom SENIOR COMMITTEE — FIRST ROW: Rene Furr, Roxie Campbell, Deanna Lowry, Cindy Meier, Tina Martin, Am Blanton. SECOND ROW: Shannon Terry, Sandie Farmer, Wendy Wilkinson, Kevin Lucas, Deborah Walker. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS — Melanie Blanton, secretary; Kevin Lucas, president; Amy Nance, treasurer. (Not pictured: Darren Washington, vice president). 18 Seniors which had been dropped several years before. Also, with the help of the National Honor Society, the Senior Committee was successful in reinstating the popular “Senior Wills.” The seniors continued operating the concession stand at home basketball games to raise money for a treasury that was already overflow- ing from previous efforts. Other traditions that were kept alive were the Senior Play and Finals Dance. Members of the 1984-85 Senior Class can be very proud of their accomplishments. It is now up to future senior classes to meet the challenge set forth by the Class of ’85. A large crowd necessitated that televisions be set up in the school gymnasium so that the overflow crowd could view the cere- monies by closed-circuit. After the invocation by Rev. J.H. Cline and pres- entation of the traditional class gift to the school by Salutatorian Dea Mahanes, senior president Kevin Lucas introduced Commencement speaker, Reggie Smith of the Virginia Education Association. Mr. Smith stressed a motivational theme, and his remarks were well received by the graduating seniors and those in the audience as well. The speech was rated by many teachers as being one of the most interesting ever given at WHS. Following Mr. Smith’s address were speeches by Co- Valedictorians Mike Rottenborn and Wendy Wil- kinson. The most important order of business of the night came next as School Board Chairman Dr. William Kappes and Superintendent Dr. Thomas Varner awarded diplomas to the eager seniors. Upon being Officially pronounced graduates of Waynesboro High School by Principal Thomas Muncy, members of the Class of 85 were ready to face the rest of their livesec. SPECIAL RECOGNITION, 1972-1985 The past fourteen years during which I have served as faculty adviser for the Skyline Yearbook Staff have been filled with endless hours, much hard work and many frustrations. This activity, however, has been a great learning experience for me, and | would like to thank the many people who have helped to make it bearable. Following is a listing of these people and the contributions they have made: —The faculty and staff of Waynesboro High School for their cooperation, especially Mr. Milnes Austin and Mr. John Gilbert for their constant, genuine concern and moral support. — Mr. Richard Lotts and Mr. Ron Hennis, past and present Directors of Student Activities, respectively, for reading 999,999 yearbook announcements during homeroom. — Mrs. Mary Frances Burnett, Main Office Secretary, for her time and patience in performing an excellent job of clerical assistance. — Mr. Shirley B. Kiger and Mr. Thomas P. Muncy Jr., WHS Principals under whom | have worked. They both placed great emphasis on the school yearbook and gave me outstanding support. More than anything, | am grateful for their confidence in my judgement. — Gentry Photography of Harrisonburg for being, by far, the best photography company | have worked with. Thanks to Hubert Gentry, Nancy Lough and all of the excellent photographers over the years. — Hunter Publishing Company of Winston-Salem, North Carolina for being a great publishing company. — Mr. Jim Ellis of Woodstock, Regional Representative of Hunter Publishing Company, for his creative assistance and friendship. — Finally, a very special thanks to my wife Linda for her photography assistance in the past and for understanding and putting up with the many, many hours that | was away from home because of the yearbook. In closing, | would like to urge all students who participate in school activities to correct what is, perhaps their greatest flaw — that of “irresponsibility.” While | have had some excellent yearbook staff members since 1972, many, especially in recent years, have simply failed to carry out all of their duties. Pages have been left incomplete — some not done at all, advertisements were left unsold, and the like. Nothing has been more frustrating to me than this. I feel that if you accept a task, then you should work to solve it to the best of your ability. In the future, | wish the best of success to Mrs. Harriet Aylor, incoming yearbook adviser; Doug Johnson, Editor of SKYLINE '86; and all of the advisers and editors who will follow them. Andrew L.
