The staff, however, had been diligently working since they had been selected in March of 1959. Then came a flurry of picture taking, retakes, and pic¬ tures that did not come back on time. Amidst the Christmas holidays, basketball season, and exams, staff members could be seen hurrying up and down the halls, searching for lost people, pictures, and pencils. The new additions this year have been: the special class history sections at the end of the Senior, Junior, and Soph¬ omore pictures, the white sweaters for the Juniors and Fresh¬ men, and the more useable dividers. The Skyline staff sincerely hopes that within these pages you will find something that brings back memories of your happy years at Waynesboro High School. We, also, wish to thank the faculty and students for the excellent cooperation they have given us this year. w Vicki Asbury Editor-in-Chief Row 1: Judy Bailey, Curriculum Ed.} Carol Wylie, Girls’ Sports Ed.} Vicki Asbury, Editor-in-Chief} Mary Gordon, Asst. As it falls, we see the friends we have had, the things we have learned, and the activities we have participated in. This 1960 Skyline presents a glance at our part in the play of life here. We are not sad that the curtain is falling, but we are truly glad, because we realize that it will rise again on a new type of life. This Skyline is published with the hope that those who follow us will be able to gain from our experiences. 4 Mr. John A. Brown JVe Shall Remember Mr. Brown, who has been at Waynesboro High School since 1952, has devoted much time to the academic betterment of his stu¬ dents. In his government, speech, and history classes he has accom¬ plished more than is required of a teacher by inculcating on his stu¬ dents a genuine appreciation of our heritage and the art of speaking. In addition to his school work, Mr. Brown has helped the Juniors with their annual variety show. Thus, in deepest gratitude, the Senior Class deems it their privi¬ lege to dedicate the 1960 SKYLINE to Mr. John A. Brown. 5 Mrs. Margaret Cash, Clerk ; Mr. Harper A. Brower; Mrs. A. M. McLaughlin; Mr. J. Fred Cook, Chairman ; Mr. John W. Garber; Mr. Robert W. Gray; M r. F. B. Glenn, Superintendent. School Board A vital part of Waynesboro High School’s existence is the school board. At their meetings, held twice monthly, the members discuss ways by which Waynesboro High School, as well as the other Waynesboro schools, can be run efficiently to achieve their purpose of teaching and challenging the stu¬ dents. Guidance Council The Guidance Council, under the directorship of Mrs. Schneider, gives unstintingly of their time to confer with each student and to discuss any of his problems. They seek to find what occupation a stu¬ dent is best qualified for by giving him occupational tests. The student body would like to thank Mrs. Schneider and her staff for the fine work they are doing. Mrs. Gladys N. Wood; Mr. Robert Fendley; Mrs. Marilyn Padgett; Mr. Carroll B. Coakley; Mrs. Martha Schneider; Mrs. B. B. Massie; Mr. Paul Bateman. 6 Under the Direction of Mr. J. L. Johnson Principal Since Mr. J. L. Johnson became the principal of Waynesboro High School in the school year 1953-1954, he has contributed greatly to the scho¬ lastic and emotional growth of the students. His friendly smile and sincere helping hand have guided us through our high school careers. An able prin¬ cipal, a fine man, and a friend to all, we hope Mr. Johnson will remain at WHS for many years to come. 7 Mrs. Patricia Austin Physical Education Mrs. Helen J. The maintenance staff, whose prodigious task it is to keep Waynesboro High School clean, is also necessary for the school’s existence. 12 for Life Mr. Paul W. Bateman Assistant Principal Curriculum Graduation from Waynesboro High School requires seventeen Carnegie units for work in the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. Beginning with the class of 1961, eighteen credits will be required for graduation. The Class of 1964, counting their 8th grade credits, will have to have 23 credits for graduation. Changes in graduation requirements are made from year to year by the State Board of Education and the school to increase the value and efficiency of the school program. A Carnegie unit is given for each full time subject which meets five times a week for thirty-six weeks, fifty-five minutes each day. The courses required for graduation in 1960 by the State Board are: English.4 units American and Virginia History . 1 unit American and Virginia Government .... 1 unit Mathematics ...... 1 unit Science. Health and Physical Education (2 years) Electives. 1 unit 1 unit 8 units Waynesboro High School is fully accredited by the Virginia State Board of Education and the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. A certificate of membership is issued to those high schools which meet specified standards of achievement. On the next pages are shown some typical classroom scenes and some of the courses, offered at Waynesboro High. 13 Mrs. Collins explains a problem in Plane Geometry to her class. Kitty Boyd and Connie Carter seem to find it just too difficult to under¬ stand. Solid Geometry is also offered at Waynesboro High School. Ninth grade math can be puzzling, but with an able teacher such as Mrs. Daniel, pupils are more eagar to learn. These students have the chance to take many follow-up courses for a more corhplete knowledge of the field. 14 Sometimes school can be fun. These boys, Lanny Yo¬ der, Billy Cole, Wayne Lin- damood, and Kenny Bassett, enjoy chemistry with Mr. Payne. Also available at Waynesboro High School this year was a course in ele¬ mentary physics. Learning how to make their own clothes is only one of the many benefits derived from taking a course in Home Eco¬ nomics. Taught by Miss Miller and Mrs. Wylie, these girls learn to cook, sew, keep house, and take care of a fam¬ ily. 15 French III and IV students lis¬ ten to a tape recording of a French reading. This course is mainly con¬ cerned with reading and mastery of the French language. The Spanish students, taught by Miss Freeman, learn to pronounce and read Spanish with proficiency with the help of a tape recorder. Many eighth grade and freshman students are taking Latin I, which is taught by Mrs. Massie. This language is the basis for all modern languages and helps students to de¬ velop better vocabularies by using Latin word stems. 16 American and Virginia govern¬ ment, required of all Seniors, is an interesting subject. Mr. David Powell answers a question about the complicated income tax form. Mr. Brown contemplates the different points of the speech Mike Asbury is giving. Public Speaking is an elective subject open to Juniors and Seniors and prepares them with self- confidence and good speaking habits for their role in the play of life. All Juniors are required to take American and Virginia History be¬ fore thev graduate. Bobbv Reyn¬ olds points out a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean as Mrs. White explains their history. Some of Mrs. Stanley’s physical education students show what they have learned this year. Included in physical education is a health course and first aid. Tommy Wright and Mr. Sanborn have a conference about mechanical drawing, while Dennis Golladay and David Bowersox look on. An elective subject, mechanical drawing is primarily for boys. % These students, who are taking Typing I, learn the keyboard and then concentrate on speed and accu¬ racy. This class is under the super¬ vision of Miss Heishman. 18 . Senior Class Officers Danny Woodworth.President Ronald Harris ..Vice-President Jean Wells.Secretary Robert Turner.Treasurer 19 Now that the scramble of Senior activities has ceased, we will gaze back to our freshman year when it all began. We can see the last minute preparations for our Junior Variety Show, the excite¬ ment of the class rings, and the numerous bottle drives to raise money. Deep in our minds, there clearly remains a place for the Senior Play, the lovely prom given to us by the Seniors of 1961, and at last—the Finals, and GRADUATION! Yes, we have attained our goal—that of earning a diploma, and now our happiness is complete! DIANE LEE ALLEN Latin I, II; Chorus-, Thespian Society. JANET MARIE ALMARODE F. H. The Senior Class of 1960 started out early by electing as its Freshmen of¬ ficers: President : Tracy Hunter; Vice- President : Johnny Harman; Treasurer : Walter Noell; and Secretary. Marsha Freed (not pictured). Our Junior year the boys presented “The Womanless Wedding” with lovely bride Wayne Grant and groom Billy Poats. Humes Franklin was the minister at the wedding, attended by Dick Coff¬ man, Jim Dowdy, Doug Larsen, and Carl Kiblinger. The fabulous Junior Variety show gave those crooners, Walter Noell and Poochie Harris, a chance to make their celebrated debut. This year, the Barbershop Quar¬ tet Singers of - Waynesboro pre¬ sented their musical scholarship to Miss Kathie Olsen for her contri¬ butions to the musicianship of Waynesboro High School and to the community. Marsha Freed was crowned Homecoming Queen by Walter Noell while Larry McDow¬ ell, Shirley Critzer, Betty Boyd, Loretta Mau- pin, and Doug Larsen watched starry-eyed. 37 Algie Guess and Bobby Turner sang “Ain’t She Sweet” to Ginny Summers in the Variety Show, while Johnny Summers, the famous bartender, watched impatient¬ ly. SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS Ray Barnes, Secretary; Ernie Hutton, President; Weston Hamilton, Vice-President. 39 The Junior Class, which has experienced a rewarding, as well as hectic year, has finally attained the goal of becoming the Senior Class of 1961. The beginning of the school year saw the organizing of the Prom, Variety Show, and many other committees. Without the help and advice of the advisor, Mr. Roger Padgett, and the head chairmen of the various committees, the Variety Show could not have been executed in such a professional manner. After hours of decorating and last minute preparations the St. Valentine’s Dance was one of the finest and most enjoyable of the season. Another grandiose festival of the school year, which was dis¬ tinctly the work of Juniors, was the annual Prom. Weeks of plan¬ ning and working were spent preparing for the Prom and the suc¬ cess of the dance was most rewarding. Bottle drives, bake sales, and any other fund raising projects that the Juniors could think of, all made 1959 one of the best years in Junior Class History. Now that we are upperclassmen we have become used to the babblings of the teachers and the gobs of homework. However, we also realize with what sincere earnestness these are meant for us. From this day on we will look forward with great anticipation to the coming of our class rings and then to our Senior year and all the privileges which go with it. What a thrill to have escaped the confines of the eighth grade and our rather questionable status as high school students! Our thrills, though, have been mixed with chills as we have discovered the homework, tests, and grades that are also a very real part of high school participation. At this point the class of ’63 is noted chiefly for its noise and numbers. It is our wish to improve our rank during the next three years. We hope to balance our good times with the hard work necessary for success in any high school activi¬ ty. We realize that Waynesboro High School has much to offer its students. May our class take full advantage of these opportunities in order that we may become good citizens of our school and of the larger life for which it is preparing us. On Stage At the Junior Class’s Valentine Dance the queen, king, and their court reigned. On the front row are Freshmen Duke John Rhode and Duchess Tina Jordan, and Eighth Grade Baroness Patricia Vines and Baron James Saunders. On the second row are Junior Prince Robert Berry and Princess Diane Byers, and Sophomore Countess Nancy Alford and Count Joseph Bear. In the center are the Senior Queen of Hearts Carol Coyner and King of Hearts Danny Woodworth. 63 Junior Variety Show Ellen Smith did her fabu¬ lous rendition of “Ma” and came back for two encores, as the crowd roared with laugh¬ ter. During intermission a star¬ tled Mrs. White found the lovely Danny Woodworth backstage, practicing for his act. Our very own “flappers” did their rendition of the “Eagle Rock”. Karen Buzzard, Patsy Owens, Mary Ellen Bosserman, Sylvia Showker, and Coo Massie bring back memories of the “Roaring Twenties”. Juniors Rings Last year the Junior Class, now the graduates of 1960, selected a collegiate designed class ring. This has now be¬ come the standard ring for Waynesboro High School. Each member of the Junior class chooses the color and finish they like, therefore you can see many different rings worn at WHS. But, if the wearer looks especially proud, you can be sure that he’s a member of the class of 1961. Jo Ann Cox; Joan Fitzgerald; Martha Long; Linda Diffee; Joan Lockridge. Linda Diffee’s face may be hidden, but you can bet there’s a proud smile on her face as the girls admire her ring. Mrs. Bateman was in charge of distrib¬ uting the rings. Many students stood in line during their lunch period. They may have been hungry, but they were happy! Although we lost our homecoming game to Buena Vista after a long hard-fought battle, a tremendous crowd was on hand for the homecoming dance. The highlight of the eve¬ ning was the crowning of the queen and her court. Escorted by Senior members of the varsity football squad, the girls came slowly down the aisle. Then came those words from Mr. Johnson, those long-awaited words: and the 1959 homecoming queen, Miss Marsha Freed. A night to remem¬ ber. 67 Senior Play Two standing room only performances of the Senior Play were evidence of the varied talent of the Class of 1960. The story, “Almost Eighteen,” by Dana Thomas, concerned a young boy who wanted two girls and a singing job. An es¬ say contest helped and hindered him. Below is the cast of characters. Judy Bailey; Kathie Olsen; Marshall Coleman; Virginia Summers; Algie Guess; Syl¬ via Showker; Ellen Smith; Johnny Summers; Betty Sue Stratton; John McKay; Jean Wells; and Wayne Lindamood. 68 “I’ll stick by you always, Eddie Bary,” said Ginny Sum¬ mers to mixed-up Algie Guess. 0 4 ) 0 V “You’re just going to have to do something about Edward, Mr. Barry.” Marshall Coleman is flabbergasted by Ellen Smith’s sarcastic re¬ mark. The teenage members of the cast have an important conference. Sylvia Showker, Algie Guess, Johnny Summers, and Gin¬ ny Summers have a reason to be solemn. 69 Senior Activities Can anyone ever forget the expression on Walter’s face when those millions of voices shouted “Surprise, surprise.” The birthday boy smiles for the camera before cutting the cake. Poochie Harris and his very active Sen ior Committee members smile because now their worries are over. Shirley Critzer, Danny Woodworth, Betty Sue Stratton, Jean Wells, Dennis Golladay, Lewis Garrett, Larry McDowell, Corky Coyner, and Bobby Turner have served faithfully this year. Marshall Coleman; Suzanne Duncan; Shirley Critzer; William Loeble; Vir¬ ginia Summers; Jean Wells. Forensic Winners Marshall Coleman and Virginia Summers represented our school in the public speaking contest. At the District V Forensic meet, Marshall won first place in the boys’ division, and Virginia won second place in the girls’ division. Suzanne Duncan, poetry winner from WHS, Shirley Critzer, prose winner, Jean Wells, spelling winner, and William Loeble, prose winner, represented our school well at the District and State meets. 71 Outstanding Seniors There are many outstanding students in the Senior Class, eleven of which were members of Boys’ and Girls’ State this year. Miss Virginia Summers was chosen as one of two Virginia girls to attend Girl’s Nation. Another outstand¬ ing Senior, Miss Jean Wells, is in the running for a Nation¬ al Merit Scholarship. Many members of the Class of 1960 are outstanding in a variety of other fields. Boys ' and Girk ' State Row : Virginia Summers; Sarah Massie; Judy Tressel; Karen Buzzard; and Suzanne Duncan. Most Athletic MARGY and WALTER By playing the best game possible, with all the good sportsmanship and school spirit of true athletes, Margy Hick- am and Walter Noell are the most athletic. 73 “Nothing succeeds like suc¬ cess,” and Virginia Summers and Corky Coyner have enough successes already be¬ hind their young lives to as¬ sure them of success in later years. Most Mischievous BETTY SUE and ALGIE Their ready wit and insane sense of humor have made Betty Sue Stratton and Algie Guess the most mischievous and most beloved of the Seniors. «it.. Most Likely to Succeed VIRGINIA and CORKY % a 74 Most Talented KATHIE and MARSHALL Kathie Olsen and Marshall Coleman, because of their vo¬ cal abilities, their accomplish¬ ed musicanship at the piano, and their acting achievements, were selected as the most tal¬ ented. Best Looking JOAN and POOCHIE Their all around good looks and outgoing personalities have earned for Joan Murray and Poochie Harris the dis¬ tinction of being the best look¬ ing Seniors at WHS. 75 “IVtomanless Last year the Juniors presented as one of their class projects a “Womanless Wedding.” The entire cast of this rollicking farce consisted of Junior boys, who, by the way, had as much fun as the student audience. Humes Franklin officiated at the ceremony while Jimmy Dowdy made sure the groom, William Poats, did not escape. Those darling twins, Poo- chie Harris and Walter Noell, were completely oblivious to their giggling audience as they concentrated on their teddy bears. Baby Jimmy Furr seems to have escaped from his Mom¬ my and Daddy. The wedding party has caught his attention. 76 Row 1 : Marshall Coleman; Judy Bailey; Doug Woodworth. If you’ve passed by the bandroom during sixth period this year, you’ve probably heard such love¬ ly serenades as “POPCORN CARNIVAL CHA- CHA’’ and “SWEET BETSY FROM PIKE” (wit h an accompaniment of giggles and guffaws). No, it’s not Gooch’s half-crazed band members; it’s the Waynesboro High School Chorus. Under the direction of Mrs. Susan Reynolds, a very able teacher and conductor, this year the Chorus presented their first operetta in years, “HANSEL AND GRETEL”. After two months of learning ‘songs, painting scenery, and selling tickets, the operetta was presented and received wapmly by Waynesboro audiences. This spring they also presented an unsually beau¬ tiful and meaningful concert. Though they may not be the best vocalizers in the world, they seem to enjoy their singing more. The girls seemed to have time against them in several games when they lost by only one or two points. This year’s team can be proud of the good sportsmanship they displayed in all of their games. We’re wishing them a winning season next year. The Little Amazon starters: Barbara Kirk - Barbara’s 15-point average will come in handy on offense next year. Penny Partridge - Penny’s play-making ability will be an asset next year as it was this year. Carroll Leys - Carroll’s height and her 12-point average have helped and will continue to help the Little A’s. Lucille Latschar - Lucille’s alertness and rebound ability will continue to pace the Amazons. Mary Ellen Bosserman, Co-captain - Mary Ellen’s defensive prowess made her one of the year’s top guards. Ellen Smith, Co-captain - Ellen’s all round basketball ability will be greatly missed next year.
