Zehler, 5PeClCl EdUC0Ti0l'1 Driver Education Math Business It has been said that the only reasons a teacher would remain a teacher would be his dedication to his subiect, and concern for his students' welfare. If that is true, then Thomas Fullerton's stu- dents have sustained the loss ofa true teacher. Mr. Fullerton first came to this area about five years ago to ioin the Science Department of WASHS. He obtained his bache- lor of science degree from Slippery Rock College. Because of his outstanding work, he received a fellowship from Penn State Uni- versity, where he became a nuclear physicist. During the five-year period at WASHS, Mr. Fullerton taught physics, chemistry, and nuclear science. His dedication to his students was apparent, as they always found his classes challenging. He even made tapes covering the material discussed in his classes for the absent students. Many of Mr. Fullerton's former students were later able to appreciate his teaching methods, especially those who went to college, they discovered that they were better prepared than many of their classmates. Mr. Fullerton was one of the few people who could have boasted of living a full life in 28 years. 27 Class Ot '77 Reaches The Top S . QL kj AFQL5 IQ dfP'f5 i Z Indian Band Travels The 1976-77 lndian Band had no small chal- lenge to face in maintaining the reputation of musical excellence acquired over many years. But the members of both the band and band front willingly sacrificed their time and put forth extra effort to make the performances of the marching and concert seasons memorable for themselves and the audiences. Band camp was the first indication that they would have to work to retain their status as members of the Indian Band. They marched and drilled during the five-day band camp. Their hard work and determination paid off, as they emerged a well disciplined unit for the football season and area parades. The dedication of the band members was fur- ther evidenced in the preparation of music for the annual mid-winter concert. Although schools were closed, the band sought permission to use the Lutheran Church, where they rehearsed for the concert. Probably one of the greatest rewards the band received for its hard work was the invita- tion to participate in the Atlanta, Georgia Dog- wood Festival in the spring. This recognition more than iustified the band's efforts and proved to be a fitting finale to the 1976-7 7 band activi- ties. 80 K. Cline imaiorette co-captainl, D. The Student Council members serve on different committees, thus allowing the designated groups to devote more time and attention to the many issues which arise. The Social Committee supervises all activities sponsored by the Student Council, among them Homecoming events, Activities Night, and dances. The Rights and Responsibilities Committee, whose duty is to protect the rights of the students and keep them well-informed of their responsibilities, initiated teacher evaluations this year. The Wel- fare Committee is primarily concerned with general courtesies. ln the name of the Student Council, the committee sent cards and flowers to hospitalized students and members of the school staff during the school year. The Welfare Committee was also respon- sible for the development of the Want-Ads bulletin board. The Communications Committee is responsible for the maintenance of the trophy case and publicity for athletic and other school events. The Citizenship Committee is in charge of the selection process for the Outstanding Person of the Month Award. The Constitution!Charter Committee takes care of all affairs dealing with the constitution and issues charters to all the school clubs. This year, they succeeded in revising the Council constitution. The proiects which the Student Council members undertook this year were, for the most part, successful. Their numerous achievements are proof of the better relations between the stu- dents and administrators, which they helped to promote. X time r, I fi g. I W. Melhorn lvice-pres.l, D. The highly-successful efforts of the 1976-77 Wayarian literary staff is evident in this edition of the yearbook. Under the able direction of editor Kathy Stambaugh, the dedicated staff worked long and hard to make this issue of the Wayarian one of the best student-produced yearbooks WASHS has ever had. They were: Virginia Baich, Frances Bassett, Amy Baylor, Dawn Bender, Denise Bercaw, Kim Calimer, Dena Cleaver, Susan Griffin, Nina Hoque, Kitty McCoy, Linda Niedentohl, Joyce Newcomer, Kim Null, Deb Pollard, Karen Punt, Cydney Savage, Carole Schwartz, Lisa Sung, and Pam Terry. The staff devel- oped the opening section, the senior and underclassmen sections, the administration and personnel section, and the activities, sports, and school life sections under the supervision of Mr. Knier, in his first year as yearbook advisor. The many hours the staff put into the making of the yearbook are apparent, the end product is a fitting tribute to their tireless efforts. The Wayarian business staff handled the advertisement section of the yearbook. The staff members sold space in this sec- tion to area businesses to help finance the yearbook. The staff, under the direction of Mr. Rankin, is an important factor to the cost of the Wayarian, without the busi- ness staff's efforts the yearbook would be much more expensive. Although the Blue-n-Gold had a slow start caused by difficulty in finding a printer, interest in the paper picked up this year. Reporters could be seen search- ing the school for sources of stories and doggedly pecking at typewriters. Miss Schafer, the advisor to the Blue-n-Gold, and Mary Farnsworth, the editor, kept the spirits of the staff members going. 92 Honor Society Begins Tutoring Program The National Honor Society tried something new this year, by beginning a tutoring program. Cheerleaders are traditionally active in school sports, and the WASHS cheerleaders are no exception. The girls are present at nearly all of the athletic events except gymnastics and track meets. Under the direction of Mrs. Sandra Beaumont, the 16 cheerleaders were divided into the Blue and Gold squads. Bobbi Fry is captain ofthe Blue Squad, which wore the new cheerleading uniforms for the first time this year. The Gold Squad captained by Jeannie Scott received new vests. And for each home foot- ball game, area florists gave the girls corsages. The cheerleaders must maintain a certain grade-point average, in addi- tion, a demerit system helps to determine the girls' eligibility to cheer at the various school functions. Many devoted members of the class worked on the various commit- tees, earnestly striving to beat the April 30 deadline. The results were splendid as cou- ples entered a dream world of seasons, time and space via a large rainbow and a time tunnel entrance. A committee pro- vided refreshments for the couples as they sat at the tables about the cafeteria area. Saturday provided good music as the evening proved to be a memorable experi- ence for all. 134 A Time For Us Gur Friend From Sweden This year, the American Field Service program brought Sweden's Johan Svartberg to WASHS. Johan is fondly known as Joe, He left his family and the busy city of Gothenberg to reside with the Sell family in Blue Ridge Summit. His father works in the Swedish Parliament and is seldom home, whereas Col. Sell, his new father, spends a great deal of time with his family. Johan finds WASHS to be more conservative than his Swedish school, yet he enioys attending classes here with his many new friends. He is an active member of the soccer team, Tribe and Con- cert Choir. We hope that Johan's senior year here with us will hold many pleasant memories for him. 5 E What happened to the money I gave you yesterday? 6 I wish we were Seniorsg they never do homework! They were: Bobbi Fry, Susan Griffin, Pam Lambert, Jeanne Scott and Karen Stine. During the week, the Student Council sponsored two days in which the students were to greet one another with the phrase Beat Owls! The lO0th person to say Beat Owls! to one of the desig- nated people received a prize. The week ended with a blue and gold color day, and a pep rally. The Indians vs. Owls game, scheduled for Sat- urday, October 9th, was postponed until Mon- day, the l lth, because of rain. Miss Susan Grif- fin was crowned Homecoming Queen at the dance held on Saturday evening. The following Monday the student body was dismissed early to attend the football game. I B. Fry, J. Scott, P.
