Sir Astley Cooper C1768-18481 in his Treatise on Dis- locations and Fractures of the joints states: G'Nothing is known in our profession by guessg and I do not believe that from the first dawn of medical science to the present moment a single correct idea has ever emanated from conjecturew-but rather by careful study and hard work. The road to knowledge in this field has not been short and many great problems still remain to be solved and in this challenge lies the peculiar fascination that Ortho- pedic Surgery holds for its devotees. 51
