The University of Detroit handed the Tartars its annual trouncing 34-0 although the Tartars threatened to score twice in the opening minutes of the game. There were plenty of new faces around last fall as Coach Lou Zarza's football team sought to better the 1949 record of three wins and five losses. A total of 44 men were invited out for fall practice, and only 10 had worn a varsity uniform before. Making up the rest of the Tartar squad were holdovers from the 1949 freshman squad which went unde- feated for the first time in Wayne football history. The biggest task facing Coach Zarza and his assistants was the rebuild- ing of the Wayne backfield. Not one letterman was returning, so the freshman backfield of quarterback Dick Brown, halfbacks Elbert Rich- mond and Frank Rosenthal, and full- back Wes Carlos was kept as a unit. In the season's third contest, West- ern Illinois jumped into a 21-0 half- time lead over the Tartars as the Wayne forwards played listless ball for the first periods. But the second half found a rejuvenated Wayne squad on the field. The Tartars pushed across three tallies, but failed to make the all- important third point- after-touch- down and lost the game by a 21-20 score: The game against Michigan State Normal gave everyone on the Tar- tar squad a chance to see action. Wes Carlos plowed over for two touchdowns as the Tartars gained their second triumph of the season, 26-6. J ourneying to Philadelphia, the Tar- tars faced highly touted Temple. The Owls scored early in the first quarter, but then the Tartar line tightened and the two teams played on even terms. Leading only 6-0 going into the final period, Temple exploded into action. The Owls pushed three scores across in the final 15 minutes to win by a comfortable 26-0 margin. Joe Arenas sparked the University of Omaha to a 33-13 trommcing of the Tartars the following week. The Tartars tangled with South Da- kota State in the Homecoming game. Near -blizzard weather cut deeply in- toan anticiapted full house, and only 3,500 fans were on hand for the open- ing kickoff. In a disastrous third quarter, the South Dakota Jackrabbits broke open the tightly contested game, chalking up four touchdowns. With the help of some brilliant blocking, South Dakota backs swung around Wayne's end and crashed through tackles for some large gains. The final score posted was 40-0. Bradley nosed out the Tartars 33-Z9 in a see-saw contest. The final game of the season found Wayne and Toledo meeting in almost near zero weather. Less than 1,000 spectators watched the game. Playing on a field frozen hard, the Rockets took advantage of every scor- ing opportunity to swamp Nayne 56- 7. Thus the grid season ended with a record of two won and seven lost. Outstanding in the Wayne line were co-captains Charlie Milo and Bob Wyman, Cy Minnella, Bob Langas, Tony Perrino, Gerry Sauve, Ed Tou- ma, Bernie Love, Mike Suchara, Pat Pantano, Larry Hubbard, Walt J en- kins, Jack Crittendon, Bill Blair, Jess Lowther and Hal Beardsley. In the backfield outstanding men in addition to Brown, Rosenthal, Rich- mond and Carlos were halfbacks John O'Hare and Don Edison, full- backs Rene Rodolosi and Rudy Herz- berg, and quarterback Ray Piesko. Not sine e Newman Ertel1's 1944-1945 won 11 and lost five had Wayne en- joyed a winning season. The big reasonfor the success of the Tartars was senior guard Ron Con- don. Although only 5 ft. 11 inches tall, Condon paced the Tartars with a scoring average of more than 14 points per game. Condon reached his peak in the first game against the University of De- troit when he tallied 26 points to lead the Tartars to an upset 5 1 -49 victory. While a good share of the Tartars' success goes to Condon, the rest of the Tartar squad d e s e r v e s much praise. Sophmore guard Bill Robin- son, although not a high scorer, was invaluable as a playmaker and de- fensive end. Forward Charlie Dubas averaged more than 10 points per game. The freshmen enjoyed one of their best seasons in Wayne history. The big man inthe frosh attack was Char- lie Primas, a6 ft. 3 inch center from Miller High School. Primas averaged more than 15 points a game. Other freshman stars were guard Ernie Wagner and Johnny Kline, who both averaged more than 10 points per game. The frosh handily disposed the Uni- versity of Detroit freshman team twice,by scores of 50-37 and 63-43.
