'14 Ng Q, i 'U' - ll I The Senior Class of 1957 dedicates these pages to the memory of two classmates who would have graduated this June. Sonia Christ who, died of polio on February 26, 1956, and Sheila Arthur who, died on April 23, 1955 after being involved in an automobile accident. MDI :I A For these, our underclassmen, our legacy is well- worn sign-posts left at strategic points along the long way back to our own early years. To the Juniors, our congratulations on their arrival at the exalted corner iust away from the main highway. To the Sophomores, the way is not as long as it now seems, and clearly are the ways marked. To the Freshmen, may your first steps be straight .und un- hesitatingly in the manner of your classmates who have already passed this way. lt is a great tempta- tion to wish that our days were before us, still . . . nlllp' ll W P' 5 , AW gm, iw' . ., ,Q . . f, -1. - ' yr. .. The Busy Beaver, which was chosen to depict the personality ot the class, was proved an apt choice as the work began on the Junior Prom, Midnight Mist , followed by the Junior Play, Dear Ruth . The beaver-like activity brought success in both ventures, Sandwiched in the activities was the concession selling at the basketball games, which brought home the bacon , so to speak, filling the class treasury in order to keep the creditors happy. The end of the year saw the gleam in the eye at the mention of the word, Senior , and a suspicion that they were going to be the best class yet. 64 5 I ' ' -.wa .s WF if J' :iff Arr ix D ra lx s ff was ww was ,rf J , if r . rf - as 'i'iL ' ,gr , L 1 -f iii i X. The Sophomore Executive Board assisted the class in selection of their emblem and class colors. The dance, Winter Wonderland , sponsored by the class, was held in December and represented a good show of class loyalty. To ease the financial strain of the Junior and Senior years, the group assumed the responsibility tor concessions in the Activity Room during the last weeks of school. The class chose a toy lion as a mascot. It will stay with the group during the rest of their school years. . 74 E K F ss, I ff? 4 As' l ng ' King 1 5 n if Nt' , K -is if EN ,S 4' if . q,, .W .W 'Qs X we V 'S YH' . The G.A.A. is an athletic organization for all sophomore, iunior, and senior girls who maintain a C average. Each girl must participate in at least two major sports a year and be there three-tourths of the time. The purpose of this club is to promote better sportsmanship among the girls of the school. Every year we have a dance and a picnic or a banquet. When the club started in 1944, there were only 8 members in the club, now there are approximately T80 active members. Our clues are 25c a month which help pay for our awards and other little things that come up during the year. We now have eight maior sports in which the girls may participate. They are: volleyball, bowling, basket- ball, archery, softball, table tennis, badminton, and modern dance. The general excellence of baton twirling and all of the other qualifications which go to making good maiorettes is apparent at any exhibition of their talents, and the corps is a credit both to the band and to the school. Maiorettes and Drum Major Varsity Cheerleaders Cheerleading is the most exciting and strenuous form of competition among girls in Wayne Memorial High. Try-outs are held in the spring of the year with about 75 girls competing for six varsity and four reserve positions. A cheer- leader is iudged on the following qualities, voice, skill, rhythm, ability, enthusi- asm, dependability, personality and must have or maintain at least a C in every subject. Left to right, Martha Fite, Faye Perry, Barbara Hubbard, Joyce Mclntyre, Karen Jewell, and Vivian Martinez. 'sw QR s j 5 137 Left to right: Dixie Johnston, Nancy Ross, Joan Hickey, Lois LaFrey. Cheerleading practices are held twice a week for the purpose ot learning new cheering methods, polishing up old routines and planning pep assemblies. Each year they attend the Michigan Cheerleading Clinic and some have attended the Midwest Cheerleading Camp during the summer. The season is climaxed by an annual banquet at which time the girls are presented their awards for recognition of their contribution to promoting good school spirit, loyalty, and sportsmanship. SEASON SUMMARY Wayne's 1956 football team swept to the Huron-Rouge title in the league's first year of competition. The Zebras began the year by becoming powerful Ann Arbor's thirty-fifth consecutive victim. The following week, however, they had little trouble downing pre-season league favorite Lincoln Park 20-7. Although they were aided in their title efforts by YpsiIanti's forfeiture, no one could deny the fact that Wayne deserved their championship trophy. Richard Radke was named the most valuable lineman and Phil Martinez the most valuable back. Gary Green was voted team captain for 1956. Home proved a iinx to Wayne again as they lost to Ypsilanti l3-6 and Dearborn 14-0. Edsel Ford interrupted the two home defeats to beat Wayne 24-18. The Jay Zees felt they had a good team despite their two-win, four-loss, one tie record, mainly because they outscored the opposition 127 points to 85. Coach Elliott said it was the fine play of boys like Jim Hawley, Rod Arvin, Johnny Partain, Reggie Parlette, Cliff Anderson and Joe and Frank Catanzarite that enabled us to have a satisfactory season.
