Wayne High School's basketball season came to a climax when they won the 1954 District Tournament by defeating Bloomfield 61 to 51. Starting with five letter men, Coach Maciejewski brought the team through a season which resulted in 14 wins and 6 losses. Wayne won their first five games before dropping a 56 to 37 contest with Stanton, however, the teamxwent on to tie with Stanton and Wisner for the west half championship of the Husker Conference. Stanton represented the west half of the Conference in the play-off game with Lyons, the winner of the east half, because Wisner and Wayne had been in a play-off game since Stanton had. In order to tie for the championship, Wayne beat Wisner in a thrilling game, 76 to 65. Larry Hofeldt scored 31 points, and he and Gordon Zapp turned in a good game under the boards. Lowell johnson, Jerry Korff, Rodney Tietsort, Dick Longe, and Steve Pawelski did a superb job to help gain this important victory. After their game with Wisner, the Blue Devils dropped one to Schuylerg and then they .came back to life and beat Bloomfield before entering the District Tournament. 'In the tournament, Wayne squeezed by South Sioux City 45 to 445 and the pressure of tournament play showed a little on the fellows. But, they snapped out of it after a night's layoff and bounced back to beat Tekamah 67 to 61. In the tournament finals, the Blue Devils gave one of their best team performances of the entire season by defeating Bloomfield in a game which featured a four- minute stall. Lowell Johnson played one of his better games and came through when points were needed. Bloomfield had reached the finals by beating Blair, the team which was supposed to win the tournament, in the semi-finals. Wayne's bid at the State Tournament in Lincoln was cut short in the first round of play when they ran up against the tall Lincoln Teachers quintet. The team gave a creditable performance but lost 52 to 41. Rodney Tietsort scored 18 points to lead the Wayne players. A .

Larry Hofeldt gained nearly half of Wayne's yardage. Wayne met a good team from South Sioux City and came out on the short end of the score, 26 to 7 in a razzle- dazzle game of football. It was the first defeat of the season. A wet turf Coach Macieiewski on the college field hampered both and Love. teams. Wayne won the west half of the Husker Conference when they defeated Wisner, 12 to 7g however, it was a costly victory because Larry Hofeldt broke his collarbone. He had previously run 68 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. Dick Longe did a good job of pass catching. In the last regularly scheduled game of the season, Wayne was de- feated by Plainview, 13 to 0. Fumbling and the loss of a couple of players on account of sickness hindered Wayne. In the play-off game Wayne was out for revenge, because Oakland had previously beaten Wayne two times. In this game Wayne looked good but was taken by surprise with a couple of screen passes and the score was 13 to 6 in favor of Oakland when the final whistle blew. Gordon Zapp, filling in for Hofeldt, did some good running at fullbackg and Gilbert Schmidt and Lowell Johnson looked good defensively. Larry Hofeldt, a sophomore back, made honorable mention for Class B in the World Herald selections. G- - . Sc ,K .T'1 L Guard ?,Baeel2 mv, LCei1?'l eQ e'l 'l'Y'hBH
